View Full Version : What do the WWE look for in a wrestler, really?

Is it the big strong man completely? I guess that's not entirely true because there's quite a diverse roster in the WWE.
What I want to know is, do these big guys with nothing about them except a good look in terms of build just get picked up off the street or are they recommended by respected trainers or something?

Depends on many things

Marketablility, failling that, big hosses.
It does seem that the WWE really has a hard-on for hosses. Their past few integrations from OVW have all been hosses (except for Randy Orton, but he's a "third generation superstar"); i.e. Mordecai, Tyson Tomko, Heidenreich, Batista, and Gene Snitski.
However, they do also look for marketability and potential. This is proven in guys like La Resistance, Carlito Cool, Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas.
Some of the time they're just looking to support their wide fan base with wrestlers of different cultures; i.e. Carlito Cool and Kenzo Suzuki.
Either you've got to be great in the ring, or great photogenically.

It has nothing to do with having big bodies and has nothing to do with wrestling skills. Any crappy wrestler can always get signed a wrestling contract.
All the WWE looks for in a wrestler is four things:
1) Looks/Image
2) Good mic skills
3) Being able to work well with others
4) Being able to entertain crowds
Not every wrestler have to be a Chris Benoit or a Kurt Angle. There are many wrestlers in WWE who only knows like one or two moves and they get signed anyway because they have the potential. Potential is all WWE looks for.
Why do you think they signed Chris Nowinski and Carmella even if they never won the competitions?

Because one is hot and the other was the Playmate of the Year.

Not true at all, dumb ass. Just an ignorant way of bashing. :foc:
If you've seen the first Tough Enough you can clearly see that Nowinski was just as far as Maven was, that's was how Nowinski got signed a contract 'cause he had the full potential and WWE liked how Nowinski worked Tough Enough.
Carmella was signed because WWE liked her mic work. It has nothing to do with being playmate of the year. Plus, I think Carmella plays a pretty good heel. :y:
Oh, another example, Victoria didn't have any wrestling skills when she got signed to WWE. Before WWE, Victoria was a cheerleader for the NFL and WWE signed her to be part of Godfather's hoes, WWE liked Victoria so they sent her to OVW to learn some wrestling skills.

It was a joke. Calm yourself. You act like you're Carmella's boyfriend and Nowinski's cousin or something. I think Chris Nowinski had a hell of a lot of a talent. Just a shame to see him injured. Carmella, I'm pretty much indifferent about. If I wanted to bash you, I would've straight out bashed you. Like this....
*ahem*
Eat a dick, ShetlonRules.
But see, that was not my intent at all. If you're looking for ignorance, check yourself.
Nowinski rules.

She has as much charisma as Melba Toast, plain and simple.

I have no qualms about WWE signing "hosses" but why are they monster pushing them before they can wrestle out of a paper bag. Some of these guys need another year or two at OVW before they can pull off a convincing match, especially at PPVs.
Then you've got guys like Christopher Daniels who is probably in the top tier of independent workers with charisma and wrestling skills not in the WWE. It grates me
The WWE would probably missuse him anyway I guess.

I dunno, if they put Christopher Daniels in Heidenreich's current spot as Paul Heyman's "protector" as such. I wouldn't mind seeing him play the role of a "man sent by Satan as punishment for Undertaker's foolery of darkness". I can definately see The Fallen Angel lead a new Ministry as such. Or maybe give him Mordecai's gimmick. The guy who is living God's will, and will not show the lvoe and compassion he shows.

No, Carmella, although fairly confident and clear on the mic, it wasn't that talent that got her hired. Carmella is another woman who can further WWE's relationship with Playboy, and she can be used in that publicity role. I agree she plays the heel very well, but she's there for more of a business reason than a talent reason. They will build on her, however, and I'm hoping they have her join Evolution, La Resistance or Randy Orton as a valet. How interesting would it be if she joined Evolution, then toyed around with all three, and eventually caused a rift in Evolution. After they sort of dissolve, Orton & Carmella can reveal they've been together all along planning this. Orton/Carmella as either the heel couple, or the self-admiring, cocky, for-all-intents-and-purposes-heel babyfaces would be an interesting developement.
And Victoria did have ring skills prior to her stint as a ho in the WWE. I think she worked on the indy scene, and the WWE liked her, so they gave her a one-time deal (well maybe two or three) to play a "character" on WWE TV. She worked in OVW, and really got good, but the WWE kept putting her debut off. Eventually they went with her, and she' put on some great women's matches.
I personally wouldn't mind that if in the next Trish/Victoria feud they let Trish make reference to Victoria's appearance at WrestleMania 2000, etc. as a prostitute. Trish can tlak about how that's the only way Vicky could get a job after the WWE contracted Trish. By sleeping her way in. I think it would build up their characters quite a bit.

They essentially look for size.
They figure they can teach people how to work, s as long as you are big you'll have a chance.
All the guys who get brought up from OVW and get real pushes are the guys with big time size. The only exceptions were the guys like Haas and Benjamin who had more in ring talent, and the amatuer credentials.
But for the most part it comes down to size. Listent o how JR puts over all the guys; "this guy has to be 6'5 320 pounds, thats incredible!".
Of coursethe problem is that they have so many big guys, that nobody looks bigger than anyone else, and nobody really can get over based on their size. So then it comes down to work and charisma, but if they looked for those things int he first place they would be better off.

Damn it, I didn't think I'd have to say this, but Carmella was signed for only one reason:
Her TA
Technical Ability DUH :shifty:
Carmella was signed because she was Playmate of the Year and she wanted to be in the WWE. Plain and simple. Anyone who thinks differently is an ignorant jackoff.
Nowinski is a different story; they signed Chris because he had charisma and good wrestling skill and they saw something in him that they liked. Same goes for that little jerk-off who's now an interview guy on Smackdown. They recognized his passion for the business, but since he's too small, they made him a backstage guy. Cool deal if you ask me.
