The second annual Vibe Awards turned ugly Monday night after Dr. Dre was attacked, the G-Unit got involved in a brawl, and a man was stabbed.

The evening started off on a high note, with several performers from the hip-hop community taking the stage, yet there was still some tension in the air.

"Suge [Knight] was there, you had a few other characters that were there from Los Angeles, Snoop was there, Dre was there, Game was there," said Jimmy Henchman, the show's co-executive producer and manager of such artists as Guerilla Black and Mario Winans. "Some people felt a little uncomfortable, people who knew the history."

According to several eyewitness accounts, about three-quarters of the way into the program Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones were onstage getting ready to present Dr. Dre with the Vibe Legend Award when the legendary production impresario was attacked near the stage. Witnesses said Dre was standing next to his wife when a man approached him, asking him for an autograph.

"Dre, being the gentleman he is, was about to sign the autograph when the guy punched him," Henchman said. "It was nothing, though. Dre handled him. Dre grabbed the dude and handled him. You could tell somebody put a battery in the kid's back to do what he did. He jumped out there."

On "TRL" Tuesday, Eminem talked about the incident, saying that "Dre is OK. He's fine. It was stupid."

As Dre started to defend himself by swinging back, bodyguards and people with the G-Unit jumped in to protect him and things quickly got out of control.

MTV has obtained footage of some of the brawl, and it shows Jones and Snoop onstage while the fighting ensues. Jones is on the mic telling people that they "messed up my rap" and later vents in disgust, "I can't believe this." On the floor — although they are not seen throwing punches — 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks are in the middle of the fray. Several men who appear to be with them have their attention directed toward two other men. One of the men is extremely husky and is holding the considerably smaller man in his arms to protect him. The smaller man is visibly frightened and holding onto the leg of a police officer who is standing onstage. Meanwhile, the men who appeared to be with the G-Unit were throwing chairs and punches, and police sprayed mace into the whirlwind of people. The fight spilled behind a black curtain to the backstage area of the awards show, which was held in the Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Municipal Airport.

Santa Monica police said one man — whom they identified only as being a 26-year-old from Los Angeles — was stabbed during the incident. He was taken to a hospital and is listed in stable condition. The only description they give of the suspect was that he was a black male wearing a white T-shirt. Police are scheduled to hold a press conference regarding the incident Tuesday evening.

"Thank God nothing more serious happened to Dre," Henchman said. "It hurts us, hurts hip-hop, hurts the whole experience. It's just a shame that there is no real forum for us to enjoy ourselves. You had the [American Music Awards] one night prior that went eventless, then you had the Vibe Awards. When they punched Dre, they punched the whole industry in the face. Then all of us got in the back of our minds the memories of what happened in L.A. with Biggie. That doesn't leave us. We're reminded of this sh--, especially when we're at an event. It kind put a black eye on the hip-hop community. It makes us not even want to come out."

A spokesperson for the G-Unit and Dr. Dre had no comment on the matter, but Vibe President Kenard Gibbs released a statement Tuesday afternoon, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred last night. It is unfortunate that an event so many people worked very hard to create has been tainted by the actions of a few individuals. The Vibe Awards and Vibe magazine represent the best of urban culture and they will continue to do so. It is a testament to the true vision of the Vibe Awards that the magnificent talent and staff continued on to create a fantastic show."

After the situation calmed down — between 10 and 25 minutes later — the ceremony continued. Dr. Dre picked up his award and told the crowd he wouldn't let incidents like that one slow him down. Later, the audience was treated to a performance of "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop with Pharrell Williams. Jadakiss also performed and was joined by Anthony Hamilton and Common.

"It's kind of like if you give in to terrorism," Henchman said about talk of not continuing with the program. "Don't get deterred. You kind of have to keep up your spirits even though [the man] tried to f--- it up. We just continued."

The Vibe Awards are scheduled to air Tuesday at 8 p.m. on UPN.

Warrant Issued For Young Buck In Vibe Awards Stabbing

SANTA MONICA, California — The Santa Monica Police Department issued a warrant for the arrest of G-Unit rapper Young Buck on Tuesday (November 16) in connection with the melee at Monday's Vibe Awards.

After reviewing a videotape of the fight, investigators believe Buck (born David Darnell Brown) stabbed 26-year-old Los Angeles native Jimmy James Johnson after Johnson assaulted Dr. Dre during the ceremony at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport hangar (see "Dr. Dre Attacked, Man Stabbed During Melee At Vibe Awards").

Buck, who will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, was one of three men seen on the videotape with knives. The other two have not been identified.

"Mr. Brown is seen lunging over another male and swinging the knife at Mr. Johnson's upper body while Johnson is looking away from him," Santa Monica Police Department spokesperson J.T. Butts Jr. said at a press conference Tuesday (November 16). "He is clearly depicted holding the knife after the assault and was a number of fight participants sprayed by pepper spray. Brown then fled the scene and was not identified until earlier this morning. ... We are asking Mr. Brown to surrender himself to the Santa Monica Police Department immediately."

The encounter began around 7:25 p.m., when Johnson approached Dr. Dre pretending to ask for an autograph and began punching him several times.

"As private security persons attempted to control Mr. Johnson, several males attempted to assault him," Butts said. "Two uniformed officers attempted to intervene and they themselves became victims when unidentified men threw chairs at them."

James was stabbed in the chest and suffered a collapsed lung. He was rushed to a local hospital and is in stable condition, Butts said.

James, who is on parole, has not yet been interviewed, nor has Dr. Dre. "We have a call in to him, he has not responded, but we will interview him at his earliest convenience," Butts said. "This investigation is continuing and we are in the process of identifying several other assault suspects. We have a lot of people to interview."

Butts said he has no idea what sparked the assault and made no connection between Johnson and Suge Knight, a longtime Dre rival who attended the awards.

Initially only two officers intervened, but Butts said 56 officers were on the scene within minutes, including more than 30 who were patrolling the Vibe Awards. Metal detectors were used at the doors, Butts said.

Young Buck has several arrests in Nashville on his record for minor offenses, Butts said. A spokesperson for the G-Unit had no comment.

I saw the tape, sad to say It's true you clearly see Buck stabbing him. Lloyd Banks is also seen throwing a chair and clearly throwing lots of punches as well as 50 and Game. They really didn't have to intervene, as soon as the man hit Dre, Dre knocked his ass out...

Maybe the other was the Source Awards, but hella violence everywhere rap is public.

People are losing more and more respect for the genre everyday because of stuff like that. So stupid.

Wasn't this year that the incident happened, somewhere like 1-2 years ago. I agree the violence is a problem, but this time I don't think the hip-hop genre is too blame. A random man comes up and attacks your boss/provider (which Dre is basically to these young guys) what would you do? Not saying the extent Buck went to is appropiate, but I know I would have been fighting...

Because they are too busy thinking about fucking their sisters. Shut the fuck up.

Come on, this is bullshit. There are always 1 or 2 stupid people who can't sit still and shut the fuck up, and then that stuff happens.Whoever that was who jumped Dre had to know he wasn't just going to get away with it. Despite being the most overrated rapper alive, 50 Cent really does have some shred of credibility so it's not sirprising that they jumped in. Sadly, it's not surprising that they took it that far either.

I'll always remember the Source Awards from a long while back when it was that whole West vs East thing. And Snoop and I think Dre (not sure about that) were on the stage and the East Coast Crowd got all hot. And Snoop looked all bad ass with that cane in his hands and he just got that crowd going with what he was saying.

Young Buck Surrenders, Expected To Post 500k Bail
By Nolan Strong
Date: 11/19/2004 7:00 pm

G-Unit member Young Buck has surrendered to Santa Monica, California police in connection with a stabbing at The 2nd Annual Vibe Awards.

According to Lt. Frank Fabrega, the rapper turned himself in this afternoon (November 19) and is expected to post $500,000 bail.

An arrest warrant was issued shortly after the incident for the Nashville, Tennessee native, after police identified him on a videotape stabbing Jimmy James Johnson.

Johnson allegedly punched Buck’s mentor, Dr. Dre, as he was accepting Vibe’s Living Legend Award.

The assault on Dr. Dre resulted in a melee in a hangar at the Santa Monica Airport, where the awards show was being taped.

Johnson suffered a collapsed lung and is currently in the hospital recovering. Authorities plan to question him in relation to the assault on Dr. Dre, but published reports suggested that Johnson was not yet healthy enough to talk.

Young Buck’s debut album Straight Outta Cashville debuted at #3 on Billboard’s Pop Chart. His Lil’ Jon produced single “Shorty Wanna Ride” is currently # 6 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Tracks chart

Serial Killers are much less frequent then the everyday crime you see on the streets. The amount of murders done by gangs I would think surpasses that doen by a few serial killers.
Besides, those types of criminals are seriously fucked up in the head. These macho inner city thugs are under peer pressure, are trying to act tough..it's all influence.
What I'm saying is that mostly, there is no reason at all why there should be so many inner city kids causing trouble and being placed in jail, if they just knew how to better themselves. When you shoot someone over a pair of shoes, the color of your clothing, or the way you might eye somebody from across the street, you know they have serious problems.

I'm not defending serial killers btw, but they are a totally different beast.

Yeh, man their peer pressured to be "gangsta"

First of all, most rappers are putting on a show in order to make money, they know what's hot so that's what they are going to do. Second of all, thinking they actually do the acts of violence in order to gain attention is stupid, they do it because they have "sometimes" grown up around a life of violence and it's instict, I GUESS. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Young Buck's work but personally I think he is an idiot for actually going to the extent of stabbing the man in a public place, besides the fact that it was pretty much already under control.

Young buck is one stupid nigger. I can imagine him there with the knife. Not giving a fuck where he is or who's watching. Taking stabbing swings at a guy. How fucking stupid can you be? Camera's are everywhere. Theres atleast one hundred witness's and you all of a sudden come up with the brilliant notion of pulling out a knife and trying to kill somebody? What the fuck does he think this is the Wild West? Pulling out a knife in front of hundreds of people and trying to kill someone doesnt make you look " Gangsta" It makes you look like one stupid nigger.
