Video game simulates Kennedy assassination
Developers say program designed to undermine conspiracy theories

LOS ANGELES - A new video game to be released Monday allows players to simulate the assassination of President Kennedy.

The release of "JFK Reloaded" is timed to coincide with the 41st anniversary of Kennedy's murder in Dallas and was designed to demonstrate a lone gunman was able to kill the president.

"It is despicable," said David Smith, a spokesman for Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, the late president's brother. He was informed of the game on Friday but declined further comment.

Kirk Ewing, managing director of the Scottish firm Traffic Games, which developed the game, said he understood some people would be horrified at the concept, but he insisted he and his team had nothing but respect for Kennedy and for history.

"We believe that the only thing we're exploiting is new technology," said Ewing, a former documentary filmmaker and senior executive with Scottish developer VIS, responsible for games like "State of Emergency." He said he sent Edward Kennedy a letter before the game's release.

Ewing said the game was designed to undermine the theory there was some shadowy plot behind the assassination. "We believe passionately there was no conspiracy," he said.

Oswald's perch recreated
Traffic Games said the objective was for a player to fire three shots at Kennedy's motorcade from assassin Lee Harvey Oswald's digitally recreated sixth-floor perch in the Texas School Book Depository.

Points are awarded or subtracted based on how accurately the shots match the official version of events as documented in by the Warren Commission, which investigated Kennedy's assassination.

Shooting the image of Kennedy in the right spots in the right sequence adds to the score, while "errors" like shooting first lady Jacqueline Kennedy lead to deductions.

Each shot can be replayed in slow motion, and the bullets can be tracked as they travel and pass through Kennedy's digitally recreated body. Players can choose to see blood by pressing a "blood effects" option.

Players can view the motorcade from a number of angles, including the perspective of filmmaker Abraham Zapruder and a view from the "grassy knoll" where some conspiracy theorists believe a second gunman was stationed.

The game will be available via download for $9.99.

That is stupid and disgusting. Killing real people in games without their permission (or their estate's permission) is just plain wrong. And the fact that it is a former US president is only going to make the political backlash against violent games worse.

Those guy should be strung up by their balls.

Anybody that would create such a thing should get a knife stuck up their ass. Making a game where you get points for shooting people in the right area is so fucking low.

So no information on where to download it yet, right.

It sounds like a joke to me.Either that or maybe they hope to make some dumb kid try the game "for real" and shoot bush.Like the whole "I saw it in GTA so I did it for real" thing.

I'm not that offended by it, but it sounds like it would be pretty boring.

Agreed, but I also think this isn't going to improve the image that computer games have.

I wouldn't pay $9.99 for it, sounds rubbish.

Also, this game will be forgotten about within 2 months, it's not like it's a major release.

Also on the subject of the actual shooting (and this is very difficult to word properly), I think it's the same as being an actor for TV or a movie who plays Lee Harvey Oswald.
No one actually gets hurt, and they're both re-creations of the event.

What's so diffeent between this and a game like Silent Scope?

This is an 'outrage' because the target is someone who was actually assassinated, whereas Silent Scope is full of fictional people.
You make a good point though.

The only reason this is such a big deal is because it has JFK's name on it. There's a hostage in Counter-Strike: Source that looks just like George W. Bush, but because they don't call him by that name, nobody says anything about it. I think the game trys to pull off the "create your own theory" characteristic well, as there are many conspiracy theories over it. I agree to some point that them using the name is a bit uneasy on relatives, but nobody gets in an uproar when they see the video of it actually happening on the History Channel.

I saw an interveiw with the guy that made it on "When Games Attack" on Bravo.
The guy says is just a natural follow up of media about the event (Theres been movies, documentaries etc) and I can't remember the rest.If theres anyone in the UK with Bravo or Bravo +1 then the show is repeated today at 11am on Bravo +1 and again on Bravo at 7:30pm and an hour later on Bravo +1.
The site for the game (for those interested) is www.jfkreloaded.com (or so it said on the show)

My mom told me about this game this morning when i talked to her. She said that she doesnt care what games I play, they could have naked strippers in it having an orgy or a game where I go around killing bystanders. But she told me that she does not want me to play this game. Sadly I just want to see what its like. Even though the game is a bad idea seeing it might be interesting.
