and Disturbed316 is right, that roster is out of date, they must have copied it from WWE's roster page, hints are Rikishi,Billy Gunn,A-Train,Chuck Palumbo, and Ultimo Dragon, they were released, except Ultimo who is rumored to return sometime in February or so without his mask and under his real name

Looks good, but so did Raw 1 and 2. Will it play good? Four player online play will kick ass, though. But the developer isn't realy known for great play engines...

yeah but isn't X-box live $50 a month...
If i'm right you'd have to basically buy the game every month to play it online lol
Plus it's x-box *throws up*
the fact that it's coming out so much later than the other wrestling games gives it a HUGE advantage, I'm going to be comparing this game to Smackdown 7, not SvR

Xbox Live is $50 a year only.
oh, well that's not that bad then, but still... comparing any amount to getting it for free is a big difference... especially if you don't already have x-box live it'll be like paying $100 for the game

Most XBox Live games come with a 2 month trial as well, so if you didn't like it you could return it at a later date and Live won't have cost you anything.

Who gets Live for one game? If you want to make $50 a year mean something, play as many games on XBox Live as you want. If you play one game only; yeah, you are playing a $100 game. And that's lunacy on a Final Fantasy XI scale. Just dabble in other Live games so you won't seem that restricted.

THQ has been quiet about WWE WrestleMania 21, offering no details on the upcoming online wrestler for Xbox. After months of begging, praying, and hoping for news, first details on WrestleMania 21 are finally available. Developed by Studio Gigante, who last brought Xbox owners Tao Feng, WrestleMania 21 is set to ship in early March, several weeks before WrestleMania 21 hits the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Featuring motion-captured animations, voice-over and commentary from your favorite wrestlers, and four-player head-to-head online play, WrestleMania 21 sounds like the wrestling game Xbox owners have been dying for.
WrestleMania 21 introduces a pro-reversal system, which is an innovative countering system that utilizes a different counter for every attacking move. The story mode, which is just as important as the action in the ring, promises a unique character-building element enabling players to upgrade a star's appearance, abilities, entrance cinematic, costumes, and move-set.
Though there are few details available on the Xbox Live functionality, it has been revealed that WrestleMania 21 includes four-player head-to-head support with multiple match types and voice chat. While voice chat in any other type of fighter would seem like a nice add-in, being able to offer your own demonstrative statements to those you're about to smack down is essential for a great online wrestling game. To make the online battles more meaningful, Studio Gigante added a Create-A-Belt option. Design your own championship belt, then take it online. Defend your belt, build your prestige, and become an online legend.
These scant details are just a taste of what WrestleMania 21 has in store for gamers. In just a few weeks, IGN will bring you in-depth details on THQ's upcoming grappler. Until then, you can enjoy the pics

The game looks alright. I'll probably get it (as long as it beats the RAWs), I hope they let you book the WWE in season, as well as maybe include the classic choose a character and start playing. I would honestly pay double for this game if they had a customizable roster, where you can disable talent, and add new ones via Live.
Do you think it would be possible if they had an option where if you start season as a wrestler like Christian, you play Christian's storylines (with Tyson Tomko, maybe teasing a reunion with Edge and/or Trish Stratus), with possible booking options popping up along the way (Should Christian join Evolution? Should he move up to the World Heavyweight Championship? Should he get a new championship belt and claim to be the true WWE Intercontinental Champion?)? Then add that with a Create-a-Superstar Season, which allows you to take a created wrestler from CAW, and debut them in the WWE. Muhammad Hassan, Simon Dean and the winner of Tough Enough can be guys like this.
Then you can have the idea of money coming into play. Instead of the player being money-oriented, you can have the wrestlers tally up cash, to buy attire, services, or even to purchase new entrance music and entrance pyros, lighting, etc. Then later you could even have the choice of buying RAW and/or SmackDown!.
I think this would make for an original gaming experience that would force me to pick up this game. The gameplay and graphics could then take a second seat. Especially since the RAWs has been a letdown in one of those areas.

Twenty-One Questions about WrestleMania 21
Massive details! John Tobias talks pro-reversal, story mode, WWE legends, and Xbox Live play.
By Hilary Goldstein
December 21, 2004 - Xbox has not been home to many wrestling games and has, at times, felt like the forgotten console for wrestling fans. That changes this March with the release of the highly-anticipated WWE WrestleMania 21. Developed by Studio Gigante and Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias, WrestleMania 21 is not Raw 3. In fact, Studio Gigante is attempting to take the best of all the wrestling games out there and making one kick-ass product.
Because WWE WrestleMania 21 is such a big game, we took our questions straight to John Tobias. John was good enough to answer all twenty-one questions. If you've been looking for WrestleMania 21 details, you've got 'em. Also included are a slew of new screenshots, just in time for the holidays.
I. You're well-known for making fighting games, so why did you decide to switch gears after Tao Feng to work on a wrestling title?
John Tobias: It made the most sense for Gigante from a business standpoint in terms of working with the license. We also had an interest in expanding the style of fighting game that we create and a wrestling title let us do that.
II. Your fighting games are heavy with Asian mythology and mysticism. Do you view wrestling as having its own mythology and if so how are you incorporating that into WM21?
JT: Well... we have to work with the style and feel of the WWE. If there's any mythology to wrestling or the WWE, it's entrenched in the Legends and the history of the sport. It's been around forever. We're injecting some of that into our Career Mode story; I'll get into that later.
III. When I told someone you were making WM21 they were shocked and said, "Wow, that's going to be a very different kind of wrestling game." I think a lot of people share that sentiment. What is it that Studio Gigante brings to WM21 that will make it different than any other wrestling game on the market?
JT: When we started working on the game our goal was to preserve the general mechanics behind the previous WWE titles that THQ has released. I think our game play is a bit snappier, but other than that we weren't out to completely reinvent the genre. I don't think we have enough experience to do that yet.
IV. What are the differences between creating a wrestling game and a fighter? What are the similarities?
JT: Well a major difference for us was working with a license. There were a lot of boundaries set and we didn't have as much freedom as we're used to having. I think the differences between the two styles of game are the complexities behind the controls. They're very different from each other and in a lot of ways I think a wrestling game's controls are less complex and more general between each character. Because of that we tried to build some depth with the addition of the Pro Reversal system. I think we did that as opposed to any gimmicky mechanics that don't really add much to the game play experience.
V. The Raw series had some good pieces, but it was by no means as good as it could have been. When you started work on WM21, did you look at what Raw 2 did and try to build on that or did you decide to start fresh with a new take on Xbox wrestling?
JT: We looked at all of the WWE titles across the various platforms that had come before. Of course our goal was to try and improve on the previous Xbox title, but we tried to make decisions specific to our game. Our biggest challenge is the fact that the current products have been in development for so many years. They've built on their engines and have been able to really pile on the features. Our first goal was to focus on quality in hopes that we'll be able to build on the quantity aspect going forward.
VI. The grappling system is probably the most important gameplay aspect for a wrestling title. Tell us how WM21's grappling system works.
JT: Our system is a bit different in that we utilize 2 buttons each with 2 different grapple types. Each has an initial lock-up between wrestlers, which is then followed by the player's choice of performing a grapple, or Irish Whip, or strike from the lock-up or switching front to back. We felt that that gave the player a lot of options once locked-up.
VII. For WM21, you're introducing a new type of counter system. Explain how the pro-reversal system works.
JT: The idea behind the Pro Reversal was to give the victim of a grapple an additional chance at reversing other than at the start of an attack. We wanted the flow of a grapple and the Pro Reversal to be very fluid so each Pro Reversal is specific to the grapple that it comes from. They all occur at different times depending on the grapple and are unique to the grapple that triggers them. There are a ton of them and they really add variety to the experience. The motion capture process really helped us see what made sense and what would really be done when reversing grapples.
VIII. A wrestler's intro is a big part of the showmanship of wrestling. How accurate will the stars intros be and how much customization can we expect for created wrestlers? Will gamers be able to rip custom soundtracks to use for intros?
JT: The Superstar intros in our game are the most accurate depiction done in any of the past WWE products to date. Our Create-a-Superstar leans more towards realism in the sense that we didn't want to have purple skinned wrestlers with massive heads and tiny feet and hands wrestling against the ultra realistic Superstars. We thought that would break the sense of realism we were going for. So we do set limits to certain aspects of CAS. We also support music ripping and will allow the player to pick his favorite ripped tune to play in his customized entrance.
IX. What's more important: The wrestling or the showmanship?
JT: Wrestling is the meat and showmanship is the potato. Or something like that.
X. How many WWE stars will be in WM21 and can you tell us a few of the big names? Any plans to include some WWE legends?
JT: There are 45 playable wrestlers -- all of the must haves like Triple H, Rey Mysterio, John Cena and some others we'll reveal very soon. The Rock actually exists as a legend, but this is old-school Rock circa 1997 with the chops and pre-tattoo -- the Rock at his prime.
Of course we also have included Andre the Giant. The cool thing about him and actually all of our wrestlers is that they are modeled to scale. So Andre is every bit of his full height; it's really cool to see him up against someone like Rey Mysterio. In the end, it was important for us to nail the likenesses of the wrestlers not only in facial features but also in physical size and exact body detail. We're not just gluing heads on bodies, a lot of work goes into capturing each Superstars likeness.
XI. How extensive are you taking create-a-wrestler? What sort of options will gamers have to create a unique wrestler, unlike any other they'll see online?
JT: As I mentioned, our CAS is all about creating realistic wrestlers that you would see on the WWE shows. We didn't want to break the sense of realism so the customization options we offer are in line with that focus. We also allow you to assign your weight class and expertise, which really can impact the strengths and weaknesses of your character. We allow players to assign any move to any wrestler, but you have to be careful which moves you assign to your created wrestler because his weight class and expertise will have an impact on how powerful certain moves can be. For example, you don't want to assign a bunch of power moves to a wrestler who is a cruiserweight aerialist, but you can if you want to. Players can also bring any created wrestler online.

XII. Raw 2's story mode had some major flaws. For example, there was no text or dialogue. That seems like important stuff to miss out on. What can fans expect from WM21's story mode? Is it going to blow us away? Will we get sound? What new elements are you adding and what, if anything, are you keeping from Raw 2?
JT: Well we've already one up'd it because we're having both text and dialog. Actually, we have dialog recorded by the real Superstars and the text is a caption option. I think by far our game will be the most cinematic of any of the previous story modes. When your character appears on the shows our cut scenes take on the life of a real broadcast by mimicking the handheld camera qualities that you see when watching WWE programming. Outside of the broadcast portions the feel of the scenes will be very cinematic and moody. We really wanted the player to feel like he is there.
XIII. How does prestige work in WM21? How hard will it be to become a face and what are the advantages?
JT: Our game is more about building a created wrestler's attributes. That is very important for a customized wrestler because without building them up he's kind of a weakling. Your first method in building a created wrestler's attributes is through Career Mode.
XIV. Will there be any sort of rivalry system for Story Mode and how will that work?
JT: The rivalries are built into the story line. We wanted to be able to manage the drama more carefully to create a very compelling storyline.
XV. Obviously we can expect the standards like cage match, but what other game modes will WM21 have?
JT: We include the most popular modes of play but we're most excited about the online modes. Whereas previous wrestling titles were limited with their online presentation we're a bit more robust. Fans will be blown away when they see what online options WrestleMania 21 will offer.
XVI. This will be the first online wrestling game for Xbox in the US. Aside from letting four players get it on in the ring, what are you doing to make the Xbox Live experience great for wrestling fans?
JT: We feature the ability to create a championship belt, build its prestige and bring it online. You can then put your title up for contention and then potentially lose it to another player online. If that happens the only way to get it back is to win it back. This can be painful because before bringing your belt online you have to build its prestige on your local Xbox and you get to personalize it through the Create-a-Belt feature. The painful part is that someone can take it all away from you, but that's what wrestling is all about... put up or shut up
XVII. Will you be implementing any Live 3.0 features like clans or voice messaging?
JT: We will be supporting voice messaging so you can verbalize your displeasure against the guy who just took your title from you.
XVIII. How about leagues or tournaments?
JT: Our hope is that the Online Create-a-Belt competition will build into a fight for the belt with the highest prestige. The holder of that belt will undoubtedly be the best player online.
XIX. Any plans for downloadable content?
JT: We hoped to support it but will have to wait for the next iteration.
XX. You are one of the rare U.S. studios making wrestling games. Do you think there's anything that a U.S. perspective brings that might be missed by a Japanese developer?
JT: Well wrestling is very popular in Japan and I think with all of the high quality Japanese developers it is only natural that they've become the go to guys. I think though that some things do get lost in translation especially in bringing the WWE to life.
XXI. My all-time favorite wrestling games are Pro Wrestling and this Japanese wrestling game, Giant Gram. What are your favorite wrestling games of all time and is there anything you are taking from those games and trying to incorporate in WM21?
JT: I enjoyed the old WWF No Mercy game on N64. We hope to capture some of that fun-factor.

New Year's brings a lot of promise. Between healthy chugs of eggnog, people around the world make resolutions to be thinner, kinder, happier. Our big resolution was to provide even more coverage of the games you want the most. Unlike your father who can't keep his promise of keeping off the sauce, we at IGN Xbox plan on holding true to our promise.
To help kick things off, we've managed to secure a half-dozen brand new WrestleMania 21 screens. These exclusive shots show the pageantry and highflying magic of the WWE. Though the true treat will be the first video of WM21 in action, consider these screens a tiny taste of the goodness to come over the next few months.
Your pals at IGN Xbox have big plans for WM21, plans that go well beyond a handful of screenshots each week. Expect to see a slew of features, video, and yes, more screens, of WM21 as early as next week. These in-depth features will continue up until the review of WM21, which you can expect shortly before the March 8 release.

Odd. They chose to go with Legend Rock as well. I don't play with The Rock, but it raises an interesting question; why isn't there a Legend version of HBK? Like Legend Undertaker and Masked Kane there's a clear visual difference with an added physical difference as well (HBK was damn-near a luchador in his prime).

Well it looks nice...then again as mentioned above so did Raw 1 and 2 and I hated those.
Hopefully now since Maven is shown everyweek they will include him on the roster for this game. It made me mad that he wasnt in Smackdown Vs Raw.

Xbox.ign.com news
It seems hard to believe, but WWE WrestleMania 21 is coming in March. Xbox owners who've long-awaited THQ's departure from the Raw series have a completely new game to enjoy this spring. Featuring 45 Superstars, including roughly a half-dozen legends, more than 20 arenas, Xbox Live play, and authentic Superstar intros and voices, WrestleMania 21 shows immense promise. While it's not quite time to give hands-on impressions of THQ's wrestler (the game just went Alpha), we have amassed some significant details.
We can finally answer your questions about the control scheme, how the Pro Reversal works in reality and not just in theory, what match types are available, and even which arenas you can do battle in. Don't think this is the end of our coverage of WM21 -- This is just the beginning. Everything you read within will be explored in even greater depth over the next two months. The Road to WrestleMania 21 begins here...
In the Ring
WM21's control scheme features two reversal buttons, two grappling buttons to allow for greater control over your Superstar's moves. To add a further touch of control, each grappling button (A and B) has two functions. Tapping the A button performs a quick grapple and holding A performs a strong grapple. The quick grapple can be very useful to snatch a wrestler in motion or to beat a quick wrestler to the punch. Tap B for a specialty grapple or hold for a submission grapple. When a wrestler's in submission, a meter appears above their name. At that point it's time for the old button mash to free yourself from the hold unless you want to tap out like a mama's boy.
Expect to see signature moves from your favorite Superstars along with the staple wrestling moves and plenty of unique turnbuckle dazzlers. A camera cut option allows for more powerful moves to be show in a more cinematic style. In these slow-mo close-up moments, players can get a good gander at sweat and blood flying off a Superstar's body.
Left and Right Trigger act as grapple and strike reversals respectively. A strike (punch, slap, kick, elbow) can come from an open stance or during a grapple. Either way, you must learn the precise timing to counter each strike. Every move, both strikes and grapples, have unique reversal timings. It's not clear if WM21 includes a counter icon or if timing must be learned through practice.
http://xboxmedia.ign.com/xbox/image/article/578/578065/wwe-wrestlemania-21-20050107054810330-000.jpg
The reward for a successful reversal is an animation specific to that attack. This means that there are as many reversal animations as strike and grapple animations. As an added element, most grapples have two phases. These more complex grapples can be reversed in the initial phase or at the start of the second phase. As can be seen in IGN's two exclusive videos reversal animations are pretty damn sweet.
The Pro Reversal system should add an interesting element to WM21 missing from THQ's previous Xbox wrestlers. Practice and timing become crucial as button-mashing techniques can now be easily defeated. And thanks to the control set-up, reversals should actually be easy to learn, but perhaps difficult to master.
It's not enough to wrestle, you need to make a show of it. Heat is the measure of the crowd's support. Taunt opponents, mix up your moves, dazzle the crowd with your wrestling prowess, and your Heat Meter fills. Once fully on fire, you can use your Superstar's finishing move (A+B). These signature moves are cinematic and devastating. It doesn't mean your opponent is done-for, but they will certainly be on their way to defeat.
Don't hesitate to use your Heat as soon as possible, as the meter won't stay full for long. Take a hit or get tossed like a salad and your Heat Meter begins to sink. The crowd is fickle, which should encourage players to continually press the attack.
As a match wears on, wrestlings appear sweatier, with successful attack often resulting in a spray of sweat. Should you start pounding your opponent, you can even get some blood splatter. While blood won't leave its mark on the mat, truly damage opponents will have their face and chest spattered red. WM21 features body-specific damage, so that targeting the face can result in blood a little earlier. Don't expect buckets of the stuff to be pouring off a Superstar's pretty face. This isn't Mortal Kombat. As can be seen in IGN's new screenshots, blood can provide a powerful image. Just imagine what a cage match can turn into with the right amount of rage.
Matches
Gamers can test their skills on four different difficulty settings (Amateur, Rising Star, Superstar, Legend) in a large variety of matches. While developer Studio Gigante wanted to include even more match types, because this is their first year on WrestleMania they had to hold back a little on fulfilling their wishlist. Still, there's a nice selection of classic match types to choose from.
Single - Normal, Cage Match, Hell in a Cell, Table Match, TLC, Ladder Match
Bra & Panty
Tag - 2-on-2 TAG, Tornado Tag, Cage Match, Hell in a Cell, Table Match, TLC, Ladder Match
Handicap - 1-on-2, 1-on-2 Tag, 1-on-3, 1-on-3 Tag
Triple Threat - Normal, Cage Match, Hell in a Cell, Table Match, TLC, Ladder Match
Fatal 4-Way - Normal, Cage Match, Hell in a Cell, Table Match, TLC, Ladder Match
Last Man Standing
Battle Royale
Royal Rumble
Of course WrestleMania 21 also features four-player System Link and Xbox Live play. Every match type and arena is expected to be playable online. The true incentive for online play is the Create-A-Belt feature (which may be changed to "Create-A-Championship). Players create a championship belt and then take it online. Though the CAB is still being implemented into the Alpha build, a high level of customization is promised. New items for your belt can be purchased in the Shopzone so that the more you play and the better you perform, the more elaborate the decorations you can place on your belt.
Take your belt online an put it up for grabs. That's right, other gamers across the country battle for your belt. Imagine busting your ass to make the sweetest belt anyone's ever seen, only to lose it to someone from Maine. Humiliation and triumph are certain to mark WrestleMania 21 as one of the more unique Xbox Live games.
Look for Xbox Live hands-on in February and expect more in-depth details on the different match types throughout the next two months.
Arenas
WWE WrestleMania 21 has 21 arenas available from the moment you first pop the game into your Xbox. It's possible that there may be a few extra unlockable arenas, but even if the final tally stay at 21, that's a heft number of places to do battle. Each arena is individually lighted, meaning that there is a noticeable change in shadows and even the glisten on a Superstar's skin depending on where a match is played.
While screens, movies, and details on each arena are forthcoming, here's a quick a dirty list start you dreaming:
Training Facility
Gymnasium
Wrestling Club
Civic Center
Industrial Basement
Vengeance
Unforgiven
Summerslam
Armageddon
Backlash
Bad Blood

Grow Your Legend
While picking one of your favorite Superstars and taking them on against a friend online or offline is a lot of fun, the real draw of a wrestling game is the career mode. Studio Gigante tossed out just about everything Raw did. Good riddance. With a fresh outlook, Gigante designed a career mode that would tell a story about a young wrestler's rise to fame on the road to WrestleMania 21.
First up, you must create your Superstar. Unfortunately, the Create-a-Superstar functionality isn't quite ready to be shown in great detail. However, here's how things begin initially. You name your Superstar (up to 16 characters) and select a hometown. Next select your expertise: Traditional, Aerialist, Power, Technician. Once that's done, you select one of four weight classes (Super Heavyweight, Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight). Then it's time for the real fun, creating a unique character with fully customizable facial features and body types. Of course you can then dress you Superstar in a number of outfits, with many more available for purchase in the Shopzone.
Your Superstar is rated in six different attributes: Speed, Stamina, Strength, Submission, Countering, and Charisma. Attribute increases can be purchased in the Shopzone. You won't have money at first, however. As a young wrestler, you must prove yourself in the training grounds and work your way up through the wrestling hierarchy. Career mode sports a heavy amount of cinematic cut-scenes and is promised to be much more focused than Raw 2. For those disappointed with Raw 2, breathe a little sigh of relief. WM21 has full voice-overs from the real Superstars and AI that actually makes sense. Go ahead and cheer, we'll wait for you to finish.
To better your Superstar, you must earn some spending cash. Aside from winning matches, there are specific goals set through each phase of career mode. At the start of your career, you have Rising Star Tasks to tackle. Here's the full list of your first challenges on your way to superstardom:
Earn $50,000
Win 20 matches
Purchase unlockable item
Win Tag match
Win Table match
Win Triple Threat match
With Studio Gigante focused on completing the final elements of the career mode, what becomes of your Superstar through the course of his career must remain a mystery for the time-being. Don't worry, in due time Create-a-Superstar and career mode will be revealed on IGN Xbox.
To further improve the look and stats of your Superstar, you can make some purchases at the Shopzone. There's a surprising number of goodies to be had at the shop and while we can't list every last item (since that list has not been finalized by Studio Gigante), here are all the categories you can choose from at the shop:
Legends - Both playable characters and legendary WWE items.
Arenas - Purchase some arenas for play online.
Weapons - Forget chairs and tables, there are much deadlier weapons you can store for a match.
Attributes
Create-a-Superstar - Accessories which unlock as you progress. These include items for head, upper body, and lower body, plus moves and entrances.
Create-a-Belt - Expect some really extravagant decorations for your championship belt.
Movies
Diva Photos - Hulk Hogan in a feather boa not included.
Screens
Misc.
More to Come
Haven't gotten your fill of WrestleMania goodness yet? Don't worry, we've got plans for a ridiculous amount of coverage. There's quite a lot still to be uncovered. A hands-on is upcoming and Xbox Live details will be quit a big deal next month. We hope to give you some in-depth details on Create-a-Superstar, Create-a-Belt, and career mode over the next few weeks.
So what's up next? Expect at least one, possibly two WM21 stories next week. We bring Turnbuckle Tuesday on (surprisingly) Tuesday of next week. A few more stories are coming for January and then the floodgates truly open in February with so many stories, you may just cry.

That magazine scan's article has got to be the most ridiculous and biased piece I've ever skimmed through. Not only is it an absurd Preview/Review hybrid, but they clearly know very little about the histpry of wrestling games. I'd qoute all the parts that were unintentionally hilarious, but that would mean copying the whole thing.

Reversals are nothing new to wrestling games, so it's an easy element to overlook. However, anyone interested in the upcoming Xbox exclusive WrestleMania 21 would be wise to focus on the innovative Pro Reversal system. Studio Gigante isn't just tossing in a ho-hum reversal system as seen in many a WWE game. Instead, the first-time wrestling developer is making reversals an integral part of gameplay. While the accurate superstar models, fantastic crowds, and awesome entrances are a big reason to smile when looking at WM21, it's the Pro Reversal system that is going to make this one memorable.
You couldn't ask for simpler functionality when it comes to reversals. The only things you need are the Right and Left Triggers and proper timing. You don't have to press a special direction for certain attacks, you don't have to hit a face button to fully execute a reversal, it's just the Triggers.
If your opponent throws a punch, a kick, a head butt, an elbow, swings a chair or a table, or tries to bash your body in any way, you need to press the Left Trigger at the right moment to reverse the move. Even if you're in a grapple, if your opponent takes a swipe at you, the Left Trigger is your only hope of avoiding the attack and turning the tables on your foe. If you're on the ground and your opponent wants to stomp your face, a quick flick of the Left Trigger can have you catching his foot or rolling out of the way to avoid a boot to the noggin. The same goes for a leap off the turnbuckle, a sock to the groin, or a cheap shot when you're against the ropes.
Right Trigger is used to reverse grapples. Almost every grapple has two parts, allowing for two reversal opportunities. There's the initial grapple and then a secondary opportunity just before transitioning to a new move. You can reverse any grapple if you have the timing down. Those who are truly quick can reverse finishing moves, which provides an opponent on his last leg a final chance to turn the tide -- plus the animation for these are among the sweetest in WM21.
While some developers might choose to a handful of animations to cover reversals of all attacks and grapples, Studio Gigante went above and beyond the call of duty, creating roughly 200 different Pro Reversal animations. While most weapons have similar reversals, just about every type of strike and grapple has a unique reversal move. The functionality remains the same (you just have to squeeze the correct trigger at the proper moment), the results vary greatly. Some reversals have your Superstar shoving the opponent away, others offer counter-strikes or powerful grappling moves.
http://xboxmedia.ign.com/xbox/image/article/582/582061/wwe-wrestlemania-21-20050121030440015-000.jpg
The only thing missing are reversals unique to specific superstars (something you can likely expect in next year's version). Considering the work put into the first iteration of the Pro Reversal System, falling short in one small aspect is quite forgivable.
From the matches we've played, reversals are going to be huge in WM21 whether playing against a friend or the CPU. Fortunately, reversals aren't going to be as easy as you might think. While the lower difficulty levels include a counter icon on the HUD that flashes when it's time to perform a reversal, there's no indication whether the incoming attack is a strike or a grapple. Usually you're acting on instinct or quick reaction. Bump things up to the higher difficulties and that single crutch of the counter icon goes away and you're forced to memorize the proper moment to counter every move in WM21.
The difficulty of a reversal depends on a number of factors. Your difficulty level has the biggest affect, with higher difficulties shrinking the reversal window. Each Superstar also has a counter rating and each type of move alters your window of opportunity. A punch or kick is going to be the easiest to counter and generally the least devastating. Finishers and turnbuckle moves tend to be the toughest, but also offer the coolest reversals
http://xboxmedia.ign.com/xbox/image/article/582/582061/wwe-wrestlemania-21-20050121030326002-000.jpg
Aside from some super-sweet animations, a successful reversal earns you heat and an advantageous position on your opponent. There's extra satisfaction on nixing a finisher or catching your buddy's fist in the air and landing a blow of your own. When the blood flows down your face and the crowd starts to chant, there's nothing better than a devastating reversal. Though reversals are nice even at the start of a match, those that come towards the end of a brutal, extended stay in the ring tend to be a tad sweeter.
While I wouldn't discount the grappling system or any other aspects of WM21, so far the Pro Reversal system has proven the most enjoyable part of WrestleMania 21. How cool is it? Be sure to check out more than 30 new screens and four new movies. Watch Kane battle Triple H and see Tajiri pull off one hell of a sweet turnbuckle reversal on Spike Dudley.
We'll have more on WM21 Monday.
Ric Flair Vs. Randy Orton
Sixteen-time World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair has been stepping into the ring for three decades. Though he may be old, none of the fight has left Flair. He's won championships, faced off against the WWE's best both past and present, and wrote "To Be the Man", a New York Times Best-Seller.
Randy Orton has the WWE in his blood, coming from a long line of wrestlers. He's an up-and-comer, having premiered on Smackdown! just a few years ago. Now he's set for the biggest battle of his career, taking on Triple H for the Heavyweight Championship at the Royal Rumble. But Orton can't look ahead, because tonight he has a fight on Raw! against Nature Boy, Ric Flair.
http://xboxmedia.ign.com/xbox/image/article/582/582294/wwe-wrestlemania-21-20050124042400334.jpg
This WM21 battle was relatively one-sided with the undersized Ric Flair outmatched and outmanned by Randy Orton. Flair was in trouble from the get go, with Orton smacking the aged wonder around like a rag doll. Bloodied and barely standing, Flair made an admirable stand at the end to get in some licks on Orton, but it was no contest. This was, sad to say, one of the most one-sided matches we've seen so far in WrestleMania 21.

Chris Benoit Vs. Garrison Cade
Chris Benoit, who gets to tussle in this weekend's Royal Rumble in Fresno, Ca., is one of the WWE's best. Garrison Cade is, well, a strange inclusion in WrestleMania 21. A relatively low-key superstar, Cade isn't the first, second, or even thirtieth choice for the average fan's roster. In part, it's because Cade, even in WM21's stats, is one of the weaker performers. So when we decided to toss Cade to Chris Benoit, we assumed it would be a massacre. It was. Only, to our shock, it was Cade bloodying Benoit in the best Cage Match we've seen so far in WrestleMania 21.
Perhaps it's because we were so cocky with Benoit, but Garrison Cade had Benoit's number from the get-go. Cade reversed at least half of Benoit's moves, kept Chris Benoit on the mat as much as possible, and had him bloody before five minutes had passed.

Benoit never even managed to put up a fight. Though the battle lasted nearly ten minutes and Cade did get a spot of blood on his forhead, this surprise match was a beatdown. With Benoit barely able to stand, it was obvious drastic measures needed to be taken. Following a few heavy blows and the fortune of a Slingshot Suplex on the ropes, Benoit managed to stun Cade enough to get a head start up the cage. Benoit managed to escape, before Garrison Cade could grab him and thus won the match, despite having a face redesigned for radio.

Something important that I forgot to post
Publisher:
THQ
Developer:
Studio Gigante's
Genre:
Wrestling
Origin:
USA
Number of Players:
1-4
Release Date:
March 8 2005
ESRB Rating:
Most likely a TEEN rating
Gameplay Features
4 different wrestler classes. Each class confers a unique movement style and grapple/attack preference.
Weight detection system considers the size and stature of a wrestler when determining the outcome of any wrestler-versus-wrestler interaction (attack reactions, lift success rate, etc).
Limb damage system: damage sustained by each limb is tracked throughout a match. Limbs which have sustained severe damage become more vulnerable to submission holds.
Heat meter: tracks how favorably the crowd is responding to each wrestler. The greater the heat, the more momentum a wrestler has. Maximum heat allows a wrestler to pull off a finishing move.
6 different attributes per wrestler, each with a distinct effect on gameplay:
Stamina: ability to sustain large amounts of damage
Speed: rate of movement around the ring
Strength: amount of damage inflicted per move
Submission: ability to force an opponent to submit
Countering: ability to counter an incoming move
Charisma: ability to build up heat through taunting
4 grapple types available to each wrestler: quick, strong, specialty, and submission. Each type of grapple has its own selection of triggerable moves, which vary per wrestler.
Support for all possible grapple states: against the turnbuckle, against the ropes, ladder, out-of-ring, etc.
Every move in the game can be countered or reversed.
Pro Reversal system: allows for skilled players to reverse a grapple move or finisher during the course of the move, granting a '2nd chance' to avoid a damaging attack.
SG said: "While some developers might choose to a handful of animations to cover reversals of all attacks and grapples, Studio Gigante went above and beyond the call of duty, creating roughly 200 different Pro Reversal animations."
Finishers and turnbuckle moves tend to be the toughest, but also offer the coolest reversals.
Superstar-specific mannerisms (attack preferences, taunts, and custom motions) bring life to each individual wrestling personality.
WM21 features body-specific damage, so that targeting the face can result in blood a little earlier.
A camera cut option allows for more powerful moves to be show in a more cinematic style. In these slow-mo close-up moments, players can get a good gander at sweat and blood flying off a Superstar's body.
Customization Features
Create a Superstar
Massively expanded selection of customization options - body type/shape, costumes, and gear
Gradual delivery of content: Created Superstars can be developed and improved via their progress through the game's career mode.
Created Superstars can be brought online to fight against another player's creation.
The name of your Superstar (up to 16 characters) and select a hometown. Next select your expertise:
Traditional
Aerialist
Power
Technician
Once that's done, you select one of four weight classes (Super Heavyweight, Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight). You can then dress you Superstar in a number of outfits, with many more available for purchase in the Shopzone.
Your Created superstar is rated in six different attributes:
Speed
Stamina
Strength
Submission
Countering
Charisma.
Support music ripping and will allow the player to pick his favorite ripped tune to play in his customized entrance.
Create a Championship
Users are given the opportunity to craft a Championship of their own design. They may specify the materials the championship is made of, the style of the faceplate and sideplates, plus any additional embellishments that make a championship stand out (I.e. precious gems attached to various points).
Progressing through the single player game unlocks additional elements that can be purchased and attached to the belt, adding to its value.
At any time, a championship can be defended locally on the user's machine, or it can be taken online and defended against all challengers.
Successfully defending a championship adds to its value, which is tracked online for those championships that rank among the most prestigious.

I wonder... How would an opponant hear Linkin Park's "Figure.09", a destined intro theme to one of characters, through his speakers? It's kinda important to me.

Visually it looks pretty nice, the flair entrance vid was kinda corny, if you looked on the ramp they had shadows of his arms that seemed to be detached from the rest of his body. Camera also cuts away to the crowd when hes getting into the ring to hide the fact his robe would be clipping through the ropes. Ortons intro was ok, kinda crap the way the music was like 20 seconds long and looped a few times.
Suprised they still havn't got the "minitron" and the 2 side panels of the raw stage setup flashing the wrestlers name with the little animations.

What is up with Booker T's hair? And half of those Diva's aren't in the WWE anymore.

Booker t appears to have his hair tied back in a kinda dreadlock ponytail, he does that on smackdown now and again.

Well its motion captured so if they walk like that in real life they do it in the game.
They updated ign last night with more vids showing kane and matt hardy here
http://media.sports.ign.com/articles/583/583647/vids_1.html
Needless to say kanes character model in game looks far too big, his heads actually above the friggin top rope when hes on the floor outside the ring. :foc:
Tombstone in the video looked pretty bad as well :nono: . What i did like though was kane going for a powerbomb and hardy slipping over his shoulder behind him and delivering a neckbreaker, looked very slick.

Kane Vs. Matt Hardy
Kane is a monster, both physically and emotionally. The tyrant has put Matt Hardy through hell. He stole Hardy's lover and seriously injured the Sensei of Mattitude the last time they met at Raw. Though Hardy and Kane won't be meeting up soon, this is a grudge match destined to happen. Thanks to WM21 we can make it a reality.
If Matt Hardy's idea of revenge involved his own destruction, than it was accomplished in the IGN office's today. Though Hardy may have the crowd-pleasing Twist of Fate at his command, Kane has size and strength. Sure, Hardy wasn't going to be beaten easily, but Kane was willing to work him slowly, wearing the Hardy down until he had little strength left in him.
http://xboxmedia.ign.com/xbox/image/article/583/583617/wwe-wrestlemania-21-20050128053426817.jpg
At one point, it looked like Hardy might be turning the tide, when he began working Kane against the turnbuckle. He made the fatal mistake of throwing Kane out of the ring. He never saw the baseball bat coming. Hardy's face kissed concrete as Kane beat him with the bat. There was nothing left of the broken man, nothing left at all.

Scotty 2 Hotty Vs. Spike Dudley
Let's face it, a match between Scotty 2 Hotty and Spike Dudley isn't going to sell a lot of tickets. Scotty has the clear weight and skill advantage. While we often try to feature true WWE rivalries, there are times when we like to throw some crazy matches together, just to see what happens.
What we discovered is that in the hands of an expert, Spike Dudley can be quite dangerous. This is particularly true thanks to the Pro Reversal system. Get someone who knows what they're doing and you can have a solid match. While Scotty won, the match was long and excessively bloody. The blood and violence was caught in nearly 40 new screens and 7 movies. Check it out.

The road to WrestleMania 21 begins with the creation of a superstar. The career mode for WM21 doesn't allow you to use current WWE stars, but there's a reason. This isn't the same type of career mode seen in WWE Raw 2. You don't work to be a face or a heel, don't choose your battles. Instead, this is a true story that starts with you playing an impetuous newcomer eager to take on the WWE's biggest and baddest. Of course, you have to prove yourself at first and work your way up the ranks, forging alliances, betraying partners, and building your legacy through cut-scenes voiced by the real WWE superstars.
While some will be disappointed by the fact that you must play a created superstar in career mode, it's a necessity for this year's game. If you have trouble dealing with this limitation, consider these three important aspects of WM21's career mode:
1. It has voice
2. It has an actual story
3. It has AI that makes some sense
Career mode lasts 52 weeks. In that time you'll go from fresh meat with a serious 'tude to one of the more respected stars of the WWE. This is your rookie season and it's going to be one hell of a ride.
The Basics
Before you can begin your journey, you'll need to create a superstar. You begin with a large number of options for creating a superstar to your liking, but there's plenty more that can be purchased as you gain cash from winning matches. Here's a step-by-step look at creating your first superstar.
Before you get into the more interesting aspects of costume and entrances, you need to decide on your superstars most basic attributes. The basics can't be changed once your superstar is created, but you can always clone your star and adjust this new star to fit your needs.
Vitals: First up is picking a name. You can use up to nine characters, which isn't much, so choose wisely. With a name you must choose a city. There are 46 cities to choose from, including Dudleyville, so you should have no trouble finding a suitable point of origin.

Expertise: This is the base for your wrestlers skills and determines their starting attributes and default moves. There are four skill types to choose from: Traditional, Aerialist, Power, and Technician.
Weight Class: Big or small, it's your choice. Super Heavyweight, Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, and Cruiserweight.
Body Size: Using a vertical and horizontal slidebar, adjust the height and build of your superstar.
Skin Color: A pyramid color palette is used for picking your skin tone. All the colors of the ethnic rainbow are included. Sorry, no blue people -- everything is done with some form of realism in mind.

Face: Though not as in-depth or as total-control as one might like, there are a number of options to customize your superstar's noggin.
Forehead - Use the vertical rule to adjust the prominence of your superstar's forehead.
Eyes - There are nine basic eye shapes (Normal, Almond, Smaller, Pinched, Asian, Bigger, Fall Down, Fall Up, and Slanted), which can be altered to perfection with a horizontal scaling rule.
Nose - Use the vertical and horizontal rules to adjust the length and width of your nose and nostrils.
Lips - Use the vertical and horizontal rules to adjust the length and width of your mouth and lips.
Jaw - Want a point chin or a square jaw? Use the vertical and horizontal rules to adjust the shape.
Once the basics are taken care of, it's time to shape your superstar into the WWE champion of tomorrow.
Costumes
Costumes are broken into three sections: Head, Upper Body, and Lower Body. Each of these is them broken down further, enable you to outfit your superstar to your liking. The best part is that just about every single costume piece from hair to boots have more than 200 color to choose from.
Head
The head has four components (Mask, Face, Hair, and Hat). Though you don't have to use each component, you certainly have the option. Who doesn't want a superstar with a hat?
Mask - You can choose from 10 full masks, including Rey Mysterio's Mask or you can go with one of four face mask options, which include Mankind's lovely number.
Face - There's a large number of face options. You can choose beards, tattoos, and face paint. Heck, face paint can be "young" or "aged," in case you want a more worn look to your markings. Want a Fu Manchu or the Hulk 'stache? You got it. And make it bright red while you're at it. That's not all, as there are nine eyebrow and nose piercings to choose from, six ways to pierce your lip, and eight types of earrings. The truly bizarre can also select any of nine oddball contacts for their eyes, including Alien Invader, Reptile, and Cat Eyes. Or you could just go for the Grandma Specs from the eyewear section.
Hair - The nifty thing about hair is that you can have layered colors so that your hair is truly unique. There are 57 hair types by default. Yeah, that's plenty of hair. Or you can go bald, like IGNXbox's own Douglass C. Perry. You can even add an extra "S" to the end of your name. Or you can be like a normal person and get a Jheri Curl.
Hats - Lastly, you 33 hats to choose from. Our favorite is the Wizard Hat, but that might be because a weird obsession with Harry Potter.
Upper Body
Once your head is up to par, it's time to get dressed. You'll need to decide first if you want a shirt or jacket -- or you can go shirtless for all the ladies.
Shirt - Shirts aren't the coolest, but can offer a casual look. That is, unless you pick the "plain shirt" which is actually a dress shirt. Give it a bowtie to look extra dapper. Here's the full menu: T-Shirt, Long Sleeve Shirt, Muscle Shirt, Tank Top, Baseball Jersey, Basketball Jersey, Football Jersey, Cop Shirt, Plain Shirt w/Tie, Plain Shirt with Suspenders and Tie, Plain w/Bowtie, Plain w/Suspenders and Bowtie.
Shirts also include options for material type (though it's hard to tell the difference between satin and silk in-game), pattern (we love going Hawaiian), and logos (put a Raw logo on your Smackdown superstar for kicks). If that's not enough, you can choose from a variety of necklaces, including the Gangsta Gold Chain. Put some tats or an elbow pad on your arms and select from seven different glove types. Sorry, but the Michael Jackson's glitter glove is not included.
Shirtless - Why wear a shirt when you can have a massive tat on your chest or back? You have 33 tattoos to select from. The same selection of jewelry and arm attire available with the shirt or jacket are available here as well.
Jacket - A baker's dozen jackets are up for grabs. The Sequin Manager Jacket is a nice touch, but we also have a soft spot for Eugene's jacket.
Lower Body
Lastly, there's the lower body. You should probably put something over your Underoos, and there are three types to choose from: Trunks, Shorts, and Pants.
Trunks - There's no difference in the type of trunk you choose, it's just a matter of how long you want your trunks. Regular fitting provides some breathing room to your goodies, but you can also go for a skin-tight fit to please the ladies. Once again, color and patterns are extra options to make for a more custom look.
Shorts - You don't have much to choose from, unfortunately, just Cargo Shorts, Classic Jean Shorts, and Baggy Jean Shorts. However, with shorts comes the option for leg tattoos and who wouldn't want to ink up a calf?
Pants - The pants options don't really blow away the lack of choices in shorts. You can have Cargo Pants, Genie Pants, Regular Fitting Pants, Loose Fitting Pants, and Dress Slacks. Apparently you'll have to wait for WM22 to wear MC Hammer pants.
Shoes - To finish things off, you need to select some shoes. Check out the full list of choices: Wrestling Boots High, Wrestling Boots Medium, Wrestling Boots Low, Gym Shoes, Hi-Tops, Skater Shoes, Dress Shoes, Combat Boots, Cowboy Boots, Curled Toe.

Career Mode
Each week in career mode is set up with an in-game cut-scene. Your created character starts off by trying to talk his way into a match with the WWE's best. Your cocky, headstrong, and ready to rock. However, your low attributes make you fodder for some of Smackdown and Raw's best. So you need to start humbly.
Things start out rocky. Following a run-in with Renee Dupree, you make the foolish challenge that you can take the Frenchman down in three minutes. You have no option but to win, as a loss or draw forces you to attempt a rematch. That's my one big problem with WM21's story mode, something that is an issue right from the get-go. There's nothing dynamic about the story. I'm fine with not being able to make choices, but I'd like to lose a match and continue story mode, with the story altering slightly. Instead, it's do-or-die.
The first three battles aren't going to be easy, especially since there's a time limit. However, by the time you're past your third match, the story begins to pick up. Early on you partner up with Booker T, make enemies of Charlie Haas and the Dudley boys, and begin to make a name for yourself. As you'd expect from a yearlong WWE drama, there are betrayals to be had. There's even a parking lot beat down that sets you on a path to refine your game.
Though you don't have a hand in shaping your alliances, a lot of care was taken in creating the story and it makes for a far more interesting experience than what Raw 2 offered. There are a ton of cut-scenes and they help show off the personality of your favorite (and I suppose least favorite) Raw and Smackdown superstars.
Nothing, however, is better than having the commentary based on your story exploits. In your first fight, your sanity is questioned. The crowd doesn't care about you, doesn't know you at all. You get nothing from them. But check out one of the first things you hear in your second fight after the bell rings: "This new kid beat Renee Dupree in three minutes last week! Can he do the same tonight?" And in your next battle, it's noted that should you win, you're easily on your way to becoming the new Smackdown star.
The change in the audience is also noted. As you begin to prove yourself, the cheers become deafening. Yes, the crowd still has its favorites, but there's extra appreciation in your quick ascension. Of course, becoming a shooting star attracts unwanted attention which leads to some bad things, but you'll have to experience career mode for yourself to enjoy.
Each victory earns you money based on the quality of your win. Use finishers and play clean to earn extra bonuses. This cash can be used to purchase new moves, costumes, and entrances. Most importantly, cash can buy you attribute points to bolster your superstar. Cash can also be earned outside of career mode, so that you can earn extra money in exhibition matches and online. That way you're always playing for something.
I've yet to complete career mode, so it's unclear if there's going to be replay value in WM21's scripted story. However, I like the direction developer Studio Gigante has taken. While it's not as free and open as wrestling fans have become accustomed to, it's still quite enjoyable. Remember that WrestleMania 21 also has a Create-A-Belt feature that allows you to customize your own championship belt and test other's skills online. That's your true career mode, one that can be played with any wrestler in the game. It may not be quite the same, but it's something.

Well, the grapple system sounds more No Mercy-like, which is a good thing. The story mode sounds kind of lame. The game looks good in stills, I haven't seen the vids yet but from what has been posted, Mo Cap was totally not the way to go (for god sakes tobias and Boon love MoCap don't they?). The roster is ok, it could definitely use some of the lower mid carders though. I do very much like the idea of a more skil based reversal system, I'd love to see exactly how a match unfolds between two skilled players.
The game looks decent thus far. I'd like to test the grapple system for myself though before I run out and buy it.
