View Full Version : Rate The Wrestler - Day 100 - Bob Backlund

Funky Fly
11-29-2004, 09:28 PM
Hello everyone and welcome to Day 100 of Rate The Wrestler! I am Funky Fly and I'm happy to say Helmsphere's baby (my godchild) has made it 100 days through all the highs and lows, through the jobbers and the legends, the hosses and the cruisers. On behalf of Helmsphere, I'd like to thank all of you for making this happen, for without you there is no RTW.

Day 99 proved to be a good day for Dean Malenko, who scored an 88. Close, Iceman, but no top 10 slot for you.

And today, we have a true legend, a man who was always the ultimate face until, in one surprise turn, a new champion was crowned a man once idolized by many lost his mind. For those of you who don't know, Bob Backlund once held the World Heavyweight Title for 4 years. He was always known as a kind of Mr. Nice Guy until in 1994 when he lost his mind ofter just barely losing a match to Bret Hart.

From that day on, Mr. Backlund (as he prefered to be called) became a moral fanatic with a bonafide mean streak. He would mercilessly choke out victim after victim with the deadly Crossface Chickenwing submission. Eventually, with Owen Hart's help, Backlund beat Bret Hart in an I Quit match to take the title for the 4th time. Then one November day at at a house show (it was actually just 3 days afterafter he won the title), Backlund set records with Diesel for fastest match and fastest title loss after a kick to the gut and a powerbomb that took only 7 seconds. Backlund is a true great, which is why he is your Day 100 wrestler.

Happy Voting.

PS: I will reveal my surprise AFTER Raw tonight. Also, my apologies for the 30 minute delay.

This guy was nuts.
I remember reading in Foley's book, that when Foley was younger he had met Bob Backlund and asked for an autograph. Bob had nothing to sign, so Mick gave him his address, and Bob Backlund sent him an autographed picture a few weeks later. That's pretty cool.
Now, onto Bob the wrestler. I never really got to see the 80's version of Backlund, I got to see his run with the WWF when he feuded with Bret Hart and played the lunatic. I hated him and he even scared me a bit. I loved when he used to randomly snap during interviews and put the crossface chicken wing on people.
Also, he had a learning problem growing up, so he used to study really big words, and memorize them, so he'd try and incorporate them into every conversation he had.

He has my favorite Raw moment ever... Remember when Owen Hart was having some contract signing, and Bret was going to sign to face Owen (I think it was Bret) and it was for the IC title I believe. Bob comes out of nowhere and locks on the chicken wing.. Own is in the back screaming "GET HIM BOB!! GET HIM!!" Then Bob turns and signs the contract himself and Owen starts screaming "NO BOB!! NO!!!"

Then Bob walks off with this wierd ass walk with a big ass smile on his face..... Yeah

As I'm sure you're all wondering, what could I possibly have to surprise these guys? Well, the answer is a new rating system. That's right, I am modifying the classic system I've used in 95 of the 99 days of Rate The Wrestler. Over the weeks I've come to believe that my system, while certainly fair and balanced, is incomplete and does not fully represent all that encompasses the qualities of a good or bad wrestler. So I'm adding categories. Mic skill isn't the same as charisma, and ability isn't the same as presence. And for the record, my personal bias will not count towards the final rating. It just shows you how much I like the wrestler of the day; it's more for your benefit than mine.

Ring ability: 10
Ring presence: 10
Overness: 10
Work rate: 10
Politics: 10
Personal Bias: 8.5
Charisma: 10
Mic skill: 10
Overall rank: 10

And for those of you thinking that you are getting gyped, fear not. Im gonna give everyone who votes 2 reps in the coming weeks.

My bad. I copied the rating over from the Dean Malenko rating and then modified it. I just forgot to take that tidbit out.

Oh. That would've been a good feud though.
Hahaha Jericho's one liners and Bob Backlund's nutty facial expressions would definitely tickle my funny bone.

lol yeah, and the matches would be greatness too.

Mister Sinister

Actually...it wasn't much, and not sure if it could be counted, But Backlund was involved slightly in a fued along with Angle against Jericho and Benoit...

I think maybe all that happened between the two was, Backlund getting the Chicken Wing on Jericho and Jericho getting Bob in the Walls....

But it happened around 2000, when I didn't have Cable, and could only watch Smackdown and not Raw....But Bob was Angles, somewhat manager at the time...but I'm just talking about nothing now....

And Funky, do i get three reps instead of two for being the founder lol

Also....
I haven't seen too much of Bob, I've seen about 10 matches and some of his work...I know I may be underrating him here, but on what I seen...He get's a 8, If I seen a little bit more of him, I proberly would give him higher

Dave Youell
11-30-2004, 02:54 AM
Got to give him a 10, he was greatness. Wouldn't surprise me to see him come out for the rumble or something next year

Hottness. Sure you can have 3. It's going to take a while before I get to everybody, though. My computer at home doesn't let me rep and I don't spend too much time in the lab. Although if my class on Thursday isn't a lab exercise, I will be repping you guys all day.

A legend who does't always appear at the top of people's lists, maybe because the last two times people saw him, he was kind of a joke figure. To me, he's like the guy that everyone knows about but no one remembers until a bit into the conversation, when someone blurts his name out and everyone goes "Oh man, why didn't I think of him???"
