Harrison signs new $66 million deal with Colts
By DAVE GOLDBERG, AP Football Writer
December 8, 2004

Marvin Harrison decided to stick around with the Indianapolis Colts as Peyton Manning's primary target.

Harrison agreed to a six-year, $66 million contract with the team Wednesday that includes a $22 million signing bonus, according to a source within the league who requested anonymity.

The star receiver is making $5.56 million this season.

Harrison, 32, who set an NFL record with 143 receptions in the 2002 season, has 826 receptions in nearly nine seasons with the Colts after being their first-round draft pick in 1996. Earlier this season, he passed the 800-catch mark faster than any receiver in NFL history.

He and Manning have also combined for more completions than any other quarterback and receiver, passing Jim Kelly and Andre Reed of the Buffalo Bills. They are second in career touchdowns to Steve Young and Jerry Rice of San Francisco.

The deal was first reported by ESPN.

Harrison, who would have become a free agent on March 1, has 67 catches for 870 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, far less than his record pace.

But that is largely because Reggie Wayne and Brandon Stokley have emerged as alternate targets for Manning, who with 44 TD passes in 12 games is just four away from Dan Marino's single-season record. In Manning's early years in Indianapolis, Harrison was the team's only consistent wide receiver.

The Colts had no immediate comment on the deal.

so now that two players cover about 40% of their teams cap it should be interesting.

According to reports, this deal will give the Colts enough cap room to resign Edge and possibly go after a couple of defensive guys in the offseason.

Brandon Stokley, who is also a free agent after the season, has stated he wouldn't mind signing for less to stay in Indy to play alongside his good friend (Manning).

When is Freeneys contract up?

What about Edge heading to Miami? Miami might just draft Cedric Benson though

I don't know, if they sign Edge then I highly doubt they will be able to get anyone really all that good on defense. I hope they don't know, Manning can put up all the numbers he wants. He can't tackle running backs, or knock balls away from wideouts so whatever. I still think hes the next Marino.

Yeah I remember hearing in the offseason that Edge wants to play in Florida because thats where he is from and has a house or something. Should be interesting, but if the Colts keep their WR trio, I don't think the RB really matters.

Yep, and if they sign edge forget about the colts.

You can't have that much cap on so few players.

I'm just using this because its the only example I know of, but let Edgerin sign down in Florida, then trade somebody random for Michael Bennett, and they are fine. The Vikings are probably going to ship Bennett after the season, and in his one full season he was like a 1300 yard rusher, so maybe the Colts could be that team.

yeah, there's a lot of Miami rumors going on, besides having a top 5 pick, there's talk of them going after Brees and that Edge and Alexander have both said they'd like to play in Miami.

I'm not sure if either is restricted at all, and I doubt Miami would give up a top 5 pick to sign one of them.

I hate how NE fans bash Indys D. I think Indy is more well rounded than NE. Numbers dont mean everything. I would take Indy over NE as my teasm, Peyton has collapsed in the past, but on paper Ind y is a lot better. Their defense is kind of weak, but I think that NEs offense is weak, and when compared to Indy, I think the gap between the offense and defense is greater in NE, basiucally I think there D is 10 times better than their O. Tom Brady is a hack.

Sure the Colts look better on paper. But a healthy Pats team would still beat them. Better defense, better coaching and an offense that knows how to win.

I like the Colts and I think that the team takes a lot of undeserving flack but they aren't as good as the Pats

And the Pats aren't boring, I don't get that. They play the best football in the league at all aspects of the game.

Dome teams just don't fare well on a January afternoon in Foxboro.

Yeah, paper only wins in Fantasy leagues.

Belicheck has Mannings number and while the Pats don't have the Colts offense, they still have a good one and most important they rarely turn over the ball and that's the key.

The Pats (in all aspects) rarely make mistakes and have the ability to run and pass and if they do turnover they have a defense that is capable of making big plays and getting right back in it.

Heck, they keep winning this year and both start CB's have been out (one a pro-bowler) and even there backup CB's have been injured.

Tom Brady's a hack? Yeah, a two-time super bowl MVP hack...

Well, of course they're not as good as your Giants....

True, but then why do the Pats beat them in September and in the Dome?

Yeah, while I am not the biggest fan of the Patriots, I respect the fact that Brady/the offense don't make many mistakes, it's a situation i'm used to seeing in sports, the best team on paper never seems to have that "intangible" that the team who wins the super bowl/stanley cup/etc have.

Back to the Colts though, I don't really like two players taking up so much cap room, I think Manning should be willing to take a pay-cut until he and the team prove themselves worthy of such high wages by winning a superbowl or two.

Because the Colts suck.

It worked for Kevin Garnett, he took a paycut and they made it out of the first round of the playoffs finally. Do it Payton, you're too the man not to.

Whatever though, everyone still doubts the Patriots for some reason. I just don't get it
