I know napster is like 99cent a song.

I'm not gonna spent a ton of money, but for some key songs I want, I wanted to know where to go.

Pretty sure with Real Player it's 79 cents a song.

How much could the artist possibly get if you're paying 99 cents for a song? Odds are, the artist you're looking for is well-off based on the fact that you can find their mp3s for sale. Most unsigned bands give their mp3s away in hopes that you'll come see them live [or buy a CD if they've got one].
Mail a dollar bill to the lead singer of whatever band you download and tell him to split it between the band. They'll see more money that way.
