Yeah that ref and the linesman on the far side were shit. Pope's sending off was stupid, he got the ball anyway and probably only made about 3 challenges all game, whereas Onyewu was raping Toni everytime he got the ball.

Two good games from that group though. I don't fancy the Czech's to get through without Baros or Koller, that Lokvenc couldn't kill a ball for toffee and even he's out of the next game, so their 4th choice striker must be handicapped or something.

Bollocks, no way in hell Australia will win. We will be very lucky to come away with anything better than a 1-2 goal defeat. Having said this if we do pull it off Guus Hiddink should be made Prime Minister - the bloke is a genius.

Ofcourse you won't beat them, but i think you could pull off a draw if they're not playing on form again

Dunno if they use that anymore. I remember in Euro 2004 they used head-to-head, it should be the same at this tournament unless they've changed it and it hasn't been reported.

I don't know if that's true. It started with a true story about a bunch of Dutch fans having to watch the match in their underwear because their clothes were covered in beer advertising. I'll find the link.

Head to head is the first tie breaker. Then it goes to the goals.

I'm pretty certain its goal difference then head to head

toxic rooster
06-18-2006, 11:13 AM
I'm confusing myself here.

In Euro 2004 (The 2-2 debacle, circa 2004), Sweden, Denmark and Italy were all tied on 5 points at the top of their group, having all beaten Bulgaria and drawn with the other 2 teams. Sweden and Denmark went through.

I remember there being something about a 'mini-group' being done, with just the 3 teams equal on points, with the same goal difference and head-to-head (having drawn each other, it was impossible not to), where Sweden and Denmark went through for scoring the highest amount of goals.

The point was made that Italy could have beaten Bulgaria 83-0 and not gone through because goal diff didn't matter because of the mini-table. So are they doing the same thing again for the world cup or what?

Troy is confused.

I'm sure i've heard its goal difference this time not head to head but i might be wrong

Why do US announcers continue on saying Brazil is every American's second team? I don't know a single person who roots for Brazil. I would figure most Americans who follow soccer would pull for their heritage.

http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/050915/1/4npf.html

The first tie-breaker is head-to-head points - not goals. If there are two teams tied, only the two head-to-head home and away games played are taken into consideration..... If teams are still not separated after taking into account head-to-head points, you must look next at their goal difference in their head-to-head encounters.

I was gutted for Australia like I would have been had it been Scotland playing. They played very well and deserved something out of the game. It's tough when you are a man down anyway because that referee might as well had been wearing yellow. He gave Brazil everything and Australia absolutely nothing. And when he did give them something, it very convinently was when Australia could have had a quick counter attack so it stopped them. Fucker. Again, billion pound championship with 2 bob refs.

Harry Kewell is fucking useless. He has nothing good about him. At this point he is without question the single most overrated footballer on the planet. Don't anyone even debate it because, quite simply, I'm right and you'd be wrong.

Ronaldinho - class talent for sure but someone at work actually tried to tell me he was the best player ever. Not only isn't he the best player in the world today in my book, he isn't even the best Brazilian player of the last 20 years.

I'll be back to bitch about something else later.

This World Cup isn't as blatant as 2002, but it is still evident that the rest of the world is catching up with the traditional powers. Between the African nations, Australia, Korea, USA and some others, it's becoming more of a real World Cup than a Europe-South American Cup...That being said, I don't see a non European/S. American team winning it this year, probably not even next time, but being in S. Africa who knows.

Fully agree with Rob. Even though the Aussie players didn't look intimidated by the Brazilians at all, unfortunately the ref did. Fuck he was useless. Classic to see Kewell telling him to get fucked at full time.

2-0 was a bit harsh on us, we defended very well. Everybody tracked back, there were men everywhere behind the ball, and there was never a lot of space for the Brazilians. That was, until the end where we had to throw men forward and they got a second. I was a bit surprised at our defence this morning, given some of our recent performances.

I don't remember us actually having a shot from inside the penalty area in the first hour except for Kewell missing that open goal. Regardless, Australia deserved to score. I think if that chance had fallen to either Bresciano or Cahill, we would have. Our finishing just needed to be a bit sharper, especially when Bresciano had a paddock in front of him and didn't get a shot off. Like the Japan game, we went fucking close so many times, we should have hit the target more often.

But anyway, we did ourselves no harm with that performance, and the good news is we only need a draw versus Croatia to make the Round of 16. The Croatians look a bit down on confidence right now, and if we defend like we did today we should get through.

AHAHAHAHA you fat shit.

Anyway, all we need is a draw from Croatia. I'd love to see to what extent Hiddink will "park the bus", so to speak. And it's not as if Kewell's our only option on the left/up front. Bresciano, Cahill, Aloisi et al come to mind.

A more appropriate score would have been 2-1. Brazil deserved to win but we deserved a goal. Regardless, considering we had MILE FUCKING STERJOVSKI on (effectively ruling us down to 10 men to start with) we did very well.

AHAHAHHAHA @ me almost predicting the score perfectly. When the teams came out I saw Sterjovski walking out and I said "oh fuck with this cunt we'll lose 5-0." Then I saw Fatnaldo walk out for Brazil and said "actually with the fatboy on we'll only lose 3-0". Had Kaka not shot wide at the end I would have been 100% right.

Anyway we should go through regardless but the Croats are going to be fired up so it will be interesting to see what Guus has in mind tactically going into the game. Regardless as I have said before the guys have achieved what I wanted them to achieve so anything from here on in is a bonus.

I hadn't seen a lot of Joe Cole before the World Cup, but he is probably my favorite English player to watch now. He is like the white Ronaldinho or something.

Also, Rooney brings a whole new dimention to England and he will be the reason they go somewhere. As for Crouch, he has looked simply awful. Is he just on the team because he is tall or what? England needs to groom themselves a better striker.

Rob Ban Fan
06-20-2006, 03:47 PM
Yes, Crouch is just in the team because he's tall. People try and kid themselves that he's not with their boring rhetoric about how he "has a good touch for a big man" and how he's "good at linking up the play with the ball at his feet."

But he is generally pretty shit and just there because he is about 9 feet tall.

And yes, Joe Cole is immense, i have been verbally fellating him to Dazz for years now about how quality he is.

I just thought of something... what if every match in a group ended in a draw? Every team would be 0-0-3, every head-to-head matchup would be a draw, and there would be no goal differential. What would happen?

I've read up on this now.

It goes:

a) Points
b) Goal diff
c) Actual goals scored

Then it gets down to head-to-head results between the tied teams

d) Head-to-Head points
e) Head-to-Head goal diff
f) Head-to-head goals scored
g) Drawing of lots by FIFA

It would probably only get down to c) though. Pretty unlikely every draw would be the same exact score.

IE if Team A (let's call them Sweden) drew their games 2-2 and 1-1 while Team B (let's call them Denmark) drew their games 2-2 and 0-0, and therefore Team C (let's call them Italy) drew their games 1-1 and 0-0, Teams A and B (ie Sweden and Denmark) would go through and Italy would miss out and cry about a conspiracy.

Rob Ban Fan
06-20-2006, 06:26 PM
Scored a fantastic goal and won the group though.

I think England will fare better against teams that actually want to play a bit, they were a lot better against Sweden because Sweden didn't have everyone behind the ball, camped in their own penalty area.

The same goes for all the big teams, like Brazil who "haven't performed" yet. Once they get into the knockout rounds and face teams that aren't really set up to defend and then hit them on the break, they'll perform better cos the quality players will have more space and time on the ball in the final third.

Players like Joe Cole/Ronaldinho will have time to find a pass and players like Rooney/Ronaldo will have space to make a run and get a shot away, without having to try and get past 11 Trinidadians/Croats standing on the goal line.

Yes he scores fuck loads of Chelsea cos he NEVER has to track back cos Makelele is defending for him, so he can sit on the 18 yard line and have about 10 shots, 1 of which normally takes a deflection and goes in. It mystifies me why people still give him so much space there.

But some how he still manages to score a stupid amount for a midfielder, so fair play.

I would gladly take ANY English referee that knows most of our players, than some fucked up Egyptian cunt or a Nazi-style German arsehole. That bald English cunt Mike Riley refereed the Australia-Greece game and while he was useless at least he made shit calls for both sides. The Egyptian and German refs so far in Oz's games have made bullshit calls against Australia. Whilst the results against Japan and Brasil haven't been affected by ref decisions, the game tomorrow against Croatia may be.

Anyway good news that we have a Pom doing the game for us. Who knows what the result will be, probably a draw but you never know. The Croats are going to be fired up though.

Grow up and stop listening to media bullshit. When Greece played here and lost there was hardly any trouble and that's with 350,000 Greeks in Melbourne. You're talking now of under 40,000 Croats of which half will probably be going for the Aussies anyway. If there is trouble it will be something like 30-40 wankers trying to act like some twat from Football Factory and the rest of the Croatian community shaking their heads at the clowns.

Point taken about the Greeks, I don't think it would have been so smooth if we'd knocked them out of the World Cup, mind you. I know some of the Cros up here. The fuckwit kind, as well.

I've played with and against a lot of them, and a few wanted me to go watch the game with them tonight. As I said, they'll be baying tonight and fully supporting Croatia. And not going to be happy if Australia knocks them out. And when I say that, I mean they'll be really UNhappy.

I've travelled to their ground with Rob a few times, fucking intimidating as all hell but it's fine. Big fucken deal they get fired up you just ignore them. You mind your own business and they do the same. Real football fans - both Aussies and Croats - know this but the Marios and Rednecks on both sides will be the wankers starting trouble (if any occurs of course). These cunts should all be shot immediately.

Anyway hopefully if there ARE brawls then both Marios and rednecks smash each other up and then the cops come in with the batons and beat the shit out of all of them. Let the football do the talking not the bullshit off the field! And I can't wait for the media to have a field day tomorrow focussing on events off the pitch rather than those on it (even if there's no trouble)

yianni
06-22-2006, 04:54 AM
I forgot to add - this country would probably have to be one of very few in the world where 2 different sets of supporters can (most of the time) watch a full-on World Cup game for competition points and get along with no trouble. There were great scenes with the Greeks in the friendly, then the Japs, then the Brasilians, hopefully the Croats are respectful too. I know the vast majority will definately be, let's hope the 5% of fuckwits they have also behave.

The Croats should take a leaf out of the Greeks' book. Out of 95,000 people at that friendly I would say 30,000 were supporting Greece passionately, but after the game clapped off the Aussie team and wished them luck in Germany. If the Croats get knocked out tonight their supporters here should all do the same!

Actually one thing you said was true, Ghana had nothing to lose, but in reality neither did the US, and them getting to the 1/4 final was as much an 'upset' as Ghana beating the Czechs and in a group with Italy and the Czech rep they weren't expected to qualify, yet they floundered in every game!

Give the Ghanaians some credit and stop being a sore loser Joey!

I'm Welsh, not British, and I'd only ever support my heritage. And that's the way it should be. I don't get Welsh and Scottish people supporting England in the World Cup just because Wales and Scotland didn't qualify. It's ludicrous.

Roight, half-time and it's 1-1. Japan and Brazil are also at 1-1, which means as it stands, we're going through to play Italy and kick seven shades of shit out of them.

Decided to stay at home once again for this game. Didn't really feel like going out anywhere tonight, the pubs up my way have all been pretty shit for football, and plus the Croatians are out in force and I know if we knock them out, some drunk bogan will start them and shit will fly everywhere.

Plus for the first time in ages there's grog in my fridge :D

Very nervy start for us, conceded to an unstoppable free kick in the second minute and we got rattled. But once we started going forward, we've owned this game and fully deserved Moore's equaliser. Croatia have already started pushing men forward so there's gaping holes everywhere. Neill and Emerton have both been allowed huge solo runs. Hopefully we can make it really emphatic 'cos that's what the kiddies like to see.

For whatever reason, Kalac got the start ahead of Schwarzer. It better have been because Schwarzer couldn't play because Kalac simply isn't up to it. He's looked nervy every time he's had the ball, and very nearly spilled a corner into the goal. Viduka also blatantly needs a better touch.

Come on Aussie.

Absolute dream for us. I said it before the world cup, getting out of our group would be a dream, gonna take some time to sink in. We've done better than I ever expected us to. It's just a dream, that's all I'll say. 32 years we've waited, and I think it's been worth the wait for a moment like Kewell's goal.

What did I say? Kalac should never have got the start ahead of Schwarzer, and Schwarzer must start against Italy. Kalac simply can't play for us again unless Schwarzer's injured. He's just not good enough, and he's had his chance.

Not quite the raping I was hoping for, but we're finally cashing in our 32 years of bad luck. Maybe the linesman felt bad for us after those 2 penalties we should have had, but Kewell was clearly offside. We should have had 2 more penalties and the goal at the end should have stood. We controlled that game really well except for the opening 10 minutes and parts of the second half. Kennedy, Aloisi and Bresciano off the bench is a killer. We had an arseload of crosses coming in all game, and they became a lot more effective when we had Aloisi and Kennedy in there.

Both teams kicked the absolute crap out of each other, and Poll had a hell of a lot to do. Speaking of which, he can't ref again at this tournament after that. He missed 2 blatant penalties, and has to be raked over the coals for not sending off Simunic. It didn't cost us this time, but it's not good enough at a World Cup not to check your book. I wonder if he thought 'this seems familiar' when he booked Simunic the third time. What would have happened if he'd scored a winner for Croatia? Shit would have hit the fan completely. Probably an appeal to FIFA over the result and all that.

That's 3 shit refs we've had in 3 games. Hopefully now we're at the business end the standards will improve.

Kewell was fantastic tonight on the left. I think he started on the right, I just don't remember. It's all been an absolute blur. Must be the skinful of beers I've had.

Well I need some fucking sleep. What a night - Arena and the yanks get dumped on their arses and we go through :D

What REALLY pisses me off, the United States will look at this World Cup as the one that the refs stole from us.

THEY DIDN'T AT ALL, WE WERE JUST AWFUL

I am glad Eric Wynalda at least has the balls to say it, Bruce Arena managed this World Cup like shit. I can't believe they went with a 4-5-1 today. The midfield was crowded and couldn't get shit forward, nobody was moving around and other than a few missed opportunities, the US played like crap.

I knew coming into the World Cup that the US team was overrated. With the FIFA ranking and the 2002 cup, people were dilusional. I remember Marcelo Balboa playing "contender or pretender" during the draw and calling the US a contender. HA. Landon Donovan plays in the MLS, the rest of our players are journeymen in the EPL, this team has NOTHING on the world powers. The 2002 team won because they were fired up, guys like Clint Mathis, even if he was unfit to play in all the games, just didn't give a shit and came through against S. Korea. This World Cup was just a bunch of pansies like Eddie Lewis and Carlos Bocanerga.

I can't get off how frustrating this game was, but the US has got a lot of work to do. We can also count our lucky stars that the next World Cup is in Africa, we are pitiful in Europe.

I found it quite hillarious that abc kept running promos for the us team boasting the FIFA ranking, and claiming no respect. I said that the US needed to improve on their 2002 wc in order to bolster support in the USA for the sport. Its sad that hasnt happend, as all the ignorant cunts will claim fluke and write football off once again.

The US were definately way overrated this time round, but they played below their abilities. and the refs have nothing to do with it. if you only score 1 goal you deserve to go home. Now heres hoping England can get their act together sans owen. That Walcott pick is looking worse by the minute. Crouch sucks donkey dong, so here's hoping Rooney can carry us on.

Also if someone could tell Gerrard and Lampard to stop skying shots from the midfield or Beckham to stop looking for Crouch's noggin from 50 yards I would be happy. There seems to be a real disconnect between the midfield and the forwards. I think they need to get the ball on the ground and work it. stop with the long balls!!

edit: P.S. I think Bruce Arena is gay, not in a derogatory way, just that he likes penis.

Poll lost control in the last 10 minutes, but he was shit throughout. How the two penalties were missed for the second half handball in the box (the defenders head wasn't anywhere near his fully outstretched arm) and when Viduka was tackled in the box just after Croatia's first goal I'll never know.

And most importantly Bruce Arena can suck my cock. Looking forward to seeing his team fall off the face of the earth when the rankings are put out after the WC. What a stupid cunt.

Winter is cooler than summer reguardless of where in the world it is. South Africa has a similer climate to Australia, so it will be cooler than summer, the only way you can play sport in the summer over here is to play it at night (unless it is a summer sport like cricket where they stand around and do fuck all, then it doesn't matter).

The weather didn't play any part in the USA's piss poor performance, it was the fact that you have shit players and your coach is a loud mouth wanker.

Normally I would have sympathy for a county that is trying to be regarded as a serious force in Football, the fact that even if the US won the whole fucking thing you lot would still watch that crash helmet crap over real Football and call your superbowl winners World Champions means that most of the World doesn't give a shit and really doesn't want to see you achieve anything of substance. It's a shame really, when it means you miss out on the emotion and excitement of the greatest sporting event in the World.

Victoria in Australia is alot like America in that respect. No disrespect to those of you that watch Football and support it - it's just a shame the majority of your country has their heads stuck up their arses.

Murray: How did they manage to pull this one off?

Foster: Because they are a team of heroes (choking up, lost voice) that's why. What they've done tonight, they've started in November and they just continue to write chapter after chapter of unbelievable heroics and this tonight was just something. I mean, Australia, welcome to the world of football. We waited so long, this is what its about, the tension, the passion. No-one wants to go home right now in this crowd Les, even the Croatians are singing. This is an amazing moment in Australian sport, you can...how can you top this? Its only world cups that can do this. For me Harry Kewell was immense, Lucas Neill tonight, I'M SORRY, we had a team of heroes but (emphasis) that guy was UNBELIEVABLE. From the word go, that guy is a genius.

Murray: Alright we had horrible luck from the word go. Terrific free kick of course. Penalty not given, handball penalty not given, all sorts of things. I don't want to tell a one sided story here but the pictures were there to prove it. The boys rose above all that in the end.

Foster: What does it take for us to get some decent refereeing when it matters for Australia? That is an absolute joke, the guy was wrestling Viduka to the ground, Simunic was. And then the handball, it was absolutely blatant - yesterday one was given against Marquez. Graham Poll is an absolute disgrace tonight (little bit of disgusted spit lands on Laszlo) I gave him a wrap today on the show - I was way off the mark. Those two assistant referees, the guy's nowhere. The courage of these guys, they're down one and they come back, they're down two and we all, we're just hoping beyond hope, the heart these guys have, I don't care, I've seen nothing like it.

Murray: Alright Fozz, relax, have a beer and I'll join you in a moment.
