At least one paper will go with the headline 'ROO IDIOT' with a picture of the groin attack, and a picture of Rooney's angry ugly mug next to it.
Our players are just technically pathetic, and never look confident with penalties. Other countries know how the find the corner most of the time, plus they don't have a goalie who is unable to reach the corners due to his pie habit.

I almost wish we had got through since if we had been missing Terry, Rooney, Beckham and Owen for the semi, some people's ridiculous expectations might have been lowered ever so slightly.
Ah well, at least we're not bitching like the Aussies :)
Hargreaves was fucking IMMENSE, he deserves all the credit in the world.
Lampard can fuck off.
Oh, and the Portuguese are diving cheating scum etc etc. But they're scum who are good at penalties ;)
Oh come on. Aside from Maniche, they didn't dive. Dickheads like Alan Shearer and Alan Hansen can deflect the blame to Cristiano Ronaldo all they like but he did nothing wrong. If I'm playing a match and someone stamps on my team mates nuts then I'd go to the referee too. Rooney only has himself to blame.

It was half in jest, but Ronaldo was caught on camera clearly diving with zero contact at least twice.
But that wouldn't have scored a fucking penalty for us, so in the end it doesn't matter.
I was saying it off and on before the tournament...
Erikkson is your Berti Vogts. His tactics are non existant. In 5 years, he hasn't built a team. The FA gave him more support than they have any other manager and he blew it. England have been SHITE for 5 years. They have been living off one result against Germany who ended up getting to the World Cup final anyway so it made zero difference. His attiutde towards friendlies was the shits and his squad for this championship was totally wrong. Owen and Rooney were both hurt going in and if you are picking them, you need 5 strikers. I said for ages that Darren Bent might be shit but you have to try him in build up matches to find out and they didn't. Picking Theo Walcott was insane but if he at least played him, he could have said he lives and dies by his decisions. In truth, he fucking bottled it.
As for the players, I wouldn't blame them too much other than the fact that absolutely none of them stepped up to the ocassion with the very, very possible exception of Gary Neville when he actually played and Aaron Lennon wasn't too bad. Extremely mediocre performances by everyone.

I don't know what Beckhams deal was, but he didn't look fit to play on that team. He had zero impact on the game to that point. Also, not like it really mattered, but why did they take Lennon out at the end? Even though it wouldn't have really affected anything, he was playing really well.
But yeah, when Beckham, Joe Cole and Lampard don't show up, you're going to have some trouble. That missed shot by Rooney, where he completely whiffed on the ball, was pretty awful too.
Also, I knew as soon as it started that Robinson wouldn't win the shootout. He has no presence in the net compared to Lehman yesterday. And he obviously doesn't have the trick down for reading the shot. Saying that the goalie just guesses which way to dive and goes for it is kind of inaccurate, but that is what he was doing. He looked awful.
From watching this tournament, I think the two keys of winning are good strikers and good goalies. England has been good in the midfield and defense but lacked at the others for a while now. Look at Germany though, of course they were going to be good but before the World Cup I wouldn't have had them doing this well. I give the credit to Klose, who has been amazing in this World Cup. Rooney is good, but I've never stayed impressed with Owen after 1998 and Peter Crouch is just laughable.
It will be interesting to see where they go with a new coach now though, I don't think Sven will be missed too much.
The difference with Sven and Steve McClaren is that McClaren would have taken 5 strikers and even if his own tactics were shit, if you needed goals, he'd gamble and put 5 guys up front. That's what you should want.
Mr. Monday Morning
07-01-2006, 02:58 PM
Considering the new coach is Sven's #2 I doubt much is going to change :-\
-edit- fuck's sake Harvey
I remain skeptical of McClaren. If he shows he has some balls and drops/subs the big names when they're obviously not playing well, then we'll see.

England were sub-par the entire tournament and deserved to go out. Hargreaves was huge in this last game, bout time they played him in his natural position. I can't see Germany getting past the Italians. The Italian defence is way too strong and with guys like Totti and Pirlo they only need one chance to slice that German defence, which is still pretty weak, wide open.
France - Portugal...eh. It seems like the Zidane farewell tour right now, gonna have to give them the edge. Of course that means Euro 2000 all over again if I'm right, but we'll see.
I think it's Germany vs. Portugal in the final.
England were subpar all tournament, yesterday we actually turned up, and some of our guys put in fantastic performances, but losing Rooney was the killers, Crouch was getting everything upfront but he had nobody to feed the ball to, he's not an up-on-his-own striker, so why Sven put him up alone is beyond me...Oh no its not, Sven's clueless.
I think as usual most of the most highly touted teams have failed to produce, what does that show? Individuals are great, but not if they don't work well together, we have one of the best pools of talented players we've ever had, but Sven didn't use them to their fullest potential, we can only blame the players so far. Why for instance did he sub Joe Cole off pretty much every game, for Stuart Downing and Owen Hargreaves amongst others? Joe Cole had a good tournament, played consistently well, Frank Lampard was consistently awful, yet he played every minute...
Fantastic performances? Hargreaves and Neville did well but that's about it. The rest of them were average at best.

The only real positive from this world cup is that I've changed my opinion on Hargreaves.
Now it's time to re-build, hopefully Sven hasn't rubbed off on Mclaren too much and we will go back to a 4 4 2, or ideally a 5 3 2
Nice to see Backham drop the captain's armband, he's done alright as the skipper, but now it's time for John Terry to take his rightful play as England's new rock.
Oh and last night was the first time in my life I wanted to hit my mum, when she came over to my house and said that famous women saying:
'Why are you so upset? It's only a game'
I've yet to talk to her since...
Terry shakes so much that I think he has Parkinson's.
I'd go with Gary Neville with Steven Gerrard as vice.
Mr. Monday Morning
07-02-2006, 09:42 AM
Neville doesn't have that long left though does he? Best to give it to someone with more than 2-3 years to go in the team. I would go with Gerrard, as Terry still doesn't look 100% comfortable at international level.
See your point but I'd still go with Neville.
Fantastic performances? Hargreaves and Neville did well but that's about it. The rest of them were average at best.
Hargreaves? He didnt do much of anything!
Crouch (who i usually slate) came on and fought for everything, his control was great, he hustled, defended well but ultimately he had nobody to feed the ball to, as i already mentioned.
The defenders in general were solid i though, Rio and Cole as much as Neville, who made a few pretty big fuck ups which luckily didn't cost us, the backpost fiasco comes to mind.

Figo has been rolling back the years too. It'll be great seeing them one last time showing the youngsters how to skill it up.
France to beat Portugal for me, mainly because Pauleta is bollocks, as are their back up strikers. The midfield battle will be brilliant with Deco back and Maniche having an excellent tournament. Both defences are very solid, both keepers erratic but France have maybe the best striker in the world right now which is a big edge.
Italy will do Germany. Germany are not a particularly good team and I think momentum can only take you so far. The Italians have been playing their game and the only goal they've conceded was a stupid own goal. Pirlo has been imperious, with Gattuso and Perrotta putting in some great work around him.

Hargreaves was immense yesterday. Didn't stop running for the whole 120 minutes.
You know I've slated that lad a lot but he was immense no doubt. Shame he was on the losing team eh.
LoL. Oh man, they've given Elizondo the final.
And for people slating Cristiano Ronaldo for the stuff that happened against England, get a fucking life! If you're gonna blame someone, blame Wayne, the ref or Sven. Ronaldo did what? Pointed out to the ref that Rooney stamped on Carvalho? Enjoyed the fact that our most dangerous player was sent off?
The diving was taking the piss but he's hardly the only one at it. If the tables were turned and Wayne pointed out to the ref that Ronaldo had stamped on say Frank Lampard's leg (the man has no balls), there wouldn't be a single fuckin' mention of it. In fact, if anything, some tards would probably praise him.
(And this is coming from me, an England man)
I think the reason everyone has laid into Ronaldo so much is due to the fact that they already hated him and every other Portuguese player to begin with.
It's not enough that they appeal EVERY time one of them goes down, that includes that fat twat Scolari, they also act like they're injured EVERY time they go down, which is ALL THE FUCKING TIME, and they then lambast the ref everytime a decision doesn't go there way.
But that's not enough, they have to then go and get our best player sent off for something the referee didn't even see. And he's also Rooney's teammate (probably ex now) and generally a smug, vastly overrated little prick.
Seriously though all Ronaldo does is stepovers, and not even properly, he just does it so much that its rendered almost useless, he's terrible on deliveries and generally doesn't contribute nearly like he should considering how good he's supposed to be. Ashley Cole OWNED him in 2004 and he replied by kicking him in the head.
I'm glad they lost, i'm glad Scolari showed his true colours too, he spent the whole night arguing for decisions that had they gone Portugal's way, may well have started another world war, that 'penalty' for instance where (i forgot which Port player) leaped into the air and brushed against a Frenchman's hands and claimed foul! He then showed no dignity or grace in defeat, just childishness.
Watching Ronaldo cry again was also sweet, not so much for the Rooney thing, but for all of the above and everything he represents in that shitbag of a team that claim to be sportsmen.
:vexed:
But that's not enough, they have to then go and get our best player sent off for something the referee didn't even see.
Then blame the referee for not doing his job properly
Ashley Cole OWNED him in 2004 and he replied by kicking him in the head.
Tis' true but rewind to the 2004 FA Cup Semi Final. And last last seasons 4-2 @ Highbury. Who owned who those days?
It just does my fuckin' head in that Ronaldo is being made out as the new Maradona hate wise when really he has done no worse than anybody else in the Portugal team.
P.S You are exactly 1 day older than me. Not that that's important or anything.

To be fair, wouldn't Ronaldo have been 19 years old in 2004? Kind of young to completely write somebody off.
Ok i was venting before, but to be fair Ronaldo was and continues to be spoken of in the same breath as Wayne Rooney and even Thierry Henry (yes seriously i've heard that), and as far as i'm concerned he has nothing on either, he has nothing on half our squad come to think of it. But, Rooney has speed, unbelievable skill, high fitness levels, power, great ball control and passing ability. Ronaldo has great ball skills (when he uses them properly), speed and he is adept at diving and being dramatic as most Southern-European players are.
ps - thats a stereotype but stupendously true nonetheless

Rooney stamped on a guy's knackers. He deserved to be sent off and Ronaldo has a duty to stand up for his team mate. If it were Ronaldo stamping on John Terry's knackers, Rooney would be in there too, telling the ref. Rightly so. Rooney isn't Ronaldo's team mate at the World Cup.
Don't remember Cole "owning" Ronaldo, but Ashley Cole is no angel and he's kicked lumps out of Ronaldo before.
Rooney dived to win a penalty against Arsenal the season before last. He's not above it.

It's typical English scapegoating. They do it every time. At Euro 2004 it was Urs Maier getting death threats for daring to disallow an England goal.
Ronaldo's father died a short time ago and he was falsely, maliciously accused of rape, so I think he can cope with a bit of booing. English pundits and commentators really ought to wind it in.

Ronaldo is a media thing for me, plain fact is Portugal were dire and if we played better or had another striker on the pitch we could have thrashed them.
I didn't see the wink, but to be honest i was so pissed off at the whole situation that i coulda easily missed it had it been shown.
I agree with what guys have said about our pundits though. The problem is diving is far more rampant amongst the Southern European teams, there's no doubting that, and saying it isn't painting England or anyone else as saintly, everyone dives at some point and argues for decisions they know they won't and shouldn't get. BUT our pundits and commentators are often overly critical of the opposition without the faintest mention of any English wrong doing.

just to weigh in on a dead horse beating, I was watching the game on the ESPN/ABC broadcast that wink was there. BBC had nothing to do with it.
I'd say I'm on the fence as to wether Rooney stamped deliberately or just landed accidently on that guys nuts. He certainly has the reputation to be a bastard but in this case, hard to say.
Diving is a big problem in the sport as a whole, as evidenced by Beckenbauer calling for a summit on the issue. Watching the France/Portugal game C. Ronaldo was horrific as the rest of the portugal side were. just embarrasing really.

And yeah, Youri Djorkaef (something like that) was a French striker in 1998 with Henry. It was funny because at one of the French matches in the World Cup they found him in the stands and were all upset because he had taken "personal time" away from the MLS to be there.

I don't think the MLS is in a position to go after talent at its best right now, but to get some world renowned names such as Zidane playing here would be big not only for the league but also for the development of players. I think that is the outlook at least.
Also, I really don't find MLS that bad, but there is just something missing. When there is a game at Houston, Utah or Los Angeles, there is a good atmosphere in the background and the game is entertaining. It's the empty Giants stadium that sucks. I don't know though, they need to get a better way to market the players or something.

No, the Sounders were a team in the NASL in the 70's. They revived the name for the USL like 10 years ago. Like the Sonics, the name refers to the jet industry

Ronaldinho's already making heaps of money, there's no point him going to an inferior league where he can't even play Champion's League football while he's still in his prime.
As far as i'm concerned there are currently like 2 or 3 leagues, maybe 4 tops that are worth going to if you're a top top player, UK Premiership and La Liga top it by a mile, then maybe France or Germany, Italy is so mired in corruption right now its not worth the bother.

Exactly. I don't believe the Ronaldinho rumor at all because the MLS has a very strict salary cap to prevent stuff like that. David Beckham has said that he would like to finish his career in the MLS, which could be big because he is hands down the most recognized named here (his bending free kick goal made the biggest headlines of any World Cup game in the Minneapolis paper), but if he wants to play in 2010 he is probably going to stay in Europe for a while.
There are a lot of leagues that are above the MLS right now, but I did read somewhere in the World Cup hype that MLS attendance is like the fifth highest in the World. That was really surprising to me, but really, I don't think the MLS is even on par with the English second division (whatever it's called, England League 1 or something?). I was torn going into the match and throughout, both as to who I wanted to win and who I thought would win. I think what it comes down to is that Barthez really isn't a PK goalie. I mean you look at a guy like Lehmann in there and the kicker is at the disadvantage, but Barthez is small and quick but not an intimidator in a shootout.
It's nice to see Italy win this one, I didn't want to see Brazil again, but it would have been nice to have at least one non-western European team in the final four.

My personal opinion of Materazzi aside, it's just utterly classless trying to blame Zidane's headbutt on him.
While a fantastic footballer, Zidane is human like the rest of us. I wish he'd just suck it up, put his hand up and admit he had a brain explosion. They happen on the field, I've been there, I've done that, we're all human. If he'd just admit it was his own fault, he wouldn't be digging himself deeper and deeper into this hole he's in.
And you get guys like William Gallas calling the Italians 'cheats'. Nevermind that Zidane heatbutts whoever he wants, Henry has been feigning injuries like no other, Malouda dived for the penalty (and even Marcel Desailly said it) and his Chelsea team mates like Joe Cole, Arjan Robben, etc have their issues.

Kind of surprised that Zidane got voted best player. Even before the headbutt, he was far from the best player in the whole tournament. He was awful in the opening round and got two red cards in the tournament. Cannavaro got robbed.
I agree Cannavaro got robbed.
The votes were taking at half time though mainly explaining how he got it despite the best ever headbutt in football.

Yknow i don't condone what Zidane did but you're all overlooking one big thing, Materazzi is a complete wanker (a well known troublemaker at that), one of the biggest in the game, he's punched guys unprovoked in the tunnel, abuses other players constantly, makes really disgusting remarks to them and then claims he's 'ignorant and doesnt know the meaning of the word terrorist' after he said something such to Zidane, fuck him and his winners medal, i'm still gonna remember Zidane for the great player he was not for nutting some racist who deserved it.
Well said. One of the biggest wankers in football today. I hope he said something really bad and then gets beat up on the street.

And for the record no fucking way were most Greeks going purely for Greece. Alot were neutral.
I was travelling through the city about an hour before the game & there were an AwFuL lot of Greeks wearing Greek stuff.
Cannavaro is easily the man of the tournie for me, from word go he was such an anchor for that defence and the whole team
See i think all you Aussie cunts complaining about Aussies (and Yanks) supporting other teams once Australia are out are just being whiny little mincers, really what the fuck is wrong with rooting for another team (especially one you have heritage in) when your national side is out?
Shut up and accept the fact that Australia suck and will always suck at absolutely everything:p (note, from time to time this does not include Cricket or Rugby, and Aussie rules is not a sport)
lol Australia suck at everything. We have won 4 World Cups in the past 7 years, and win more gold medals per capita during the Olympics than any other country in the world.
& well done on not reading anything. I couldn't give a toss who anybody barracks for when Australia aren't playing, but what pisses me off is when 2nd or 3rd Generation Australians are barracking for another country WHEN THEY ARE PLAYING AUSTRALIA. Also, nobody from anywhere should be allowed to barrack for Italy in anything because they are diving cheats.

A fair point, however I see nothing wrong with someone with both Australian and another ethnic background passionately following one of these teams BUT giving the other one the respect it deserves. But what fucking shits me is when a Greek or Croat or Italian or whoever, rubbishes the country they have been raised in and act like they're the biggest hard cunt from their 'old' country, even though the chances are they haven't ever actually been there!! As for me my stance as I have said before is the same level of support for Socceroos and Greece.
As for Italy, I will keep saying it - FUCK THE CUNTS!

Oh I'm quite over it. In fact I think it's pretty funny you're claiming bragging rights for your third team winning.
BTW, when did I ever claim bragging rights on my "third team"?
All I remember doing is being happy that the Italians won, since I am Italian... my dad is from Italy and I was raised in a major Italian neighborhood.
Can't a guy be happy for a team without having to root for them since birth?
Can you Aussies shut the fuck up? ;)
As for Materazzi being a wanker? So what? What's that gotta do with Zidane being the filthy arab terrorist human sweatbox machine that he is? If I hit everyone that called me a name during a sunday morning match, I'd be perminately kicked out of football. He got what he deserved and that's the end of it.

To be fair, it was the World Cup Final and looked like it was going to penalties.
He is 33 years old, I am sure he has heard much worse before, it was his last ever game one of the most important he was ever going to play in. Zidane should've known better, taken a deep breath and walked away.
He could've just waited 15 minutes then win or lose gone and snapped both Materazzi's legs. By doing what he did and getting sent off he let Materazzi win and he let his country down.
When El Hadji Douche spat in Arjan de Zeeuw's face he just walked away and said afterwards he wanted to smack him in the face but he knew getting the win for the team was more important than doing something stupid and getting himself sent off.
I've already said i'm not excusing Zidane, he shoulda walked away, but i don't blame him for what he did, there's no place for that kinda vile shit like Materazzi was spouting in football.

Nobody (apart from Materazzi himself and probably Zidane) knows what he actually said.
Exactly. And Zidane should have done what any man with a brain would have - Let it go, win the World Cup, barge into the Italian dressing room with your winners medal around your neck and then beat the piss out of him. Anyone defending him like he was hard done by is a mong.
It was a battle of minds and Materazzi won. :y:

Racist? He is filthy, arab and human sweatbox machine. He might not be a terrorist though so I'll leave that until later. I find it funny you get all upset at me when people on this forum have been calling people queer and black cunts all year. Where were you then?
You would have did what Zidane did? Good for you. What do you want? A medal? Well maybe Zidane will give you his LOSERS medal because headbutting Materazzi during that match insured he got one. I would have done all my fighting after the match whilst rubbing my WINNERS medal in his face.

Like Henry said, you can take him (Zidane) out of a bad neighbourhood but you can't take the bad neighbourhood out of him. Fuck him.
Everyone loves to mention how Italy doesn't deserve to win and they are divers and you know what fuck every other country cause Italy has been screwed out of matches more times than I care to remember. Everyone remembers how Italy got that pentalty shot against Australia, but everyone seems to have forgotten that Italy had gotten a red card for a tackle that should have gotten a yellow at most and played a man down for pretty much the second half and Australia still couldn't score so fuck them. It's about goddamn time some calls went Italy's way. I was born in Italy and the pride that I have for that team is just unbelieveable. They deserved the win.

I'm with Rob on this. I wish Zidane would suck it up and have the cajones to admit he had a brain explosion and that it was his fault, instead of trying to blame everyone under the sun for it. It's a high pressure game and it gets the better of some people, I see them on the pitch all the time. It's just a shame everyone will remember Zidane for being such a classless git after the great career he's had.
Everyone seems to be getting the 2 issues confused here:
1) Zidane had a brain explosion, shouldn't have done what he done, and shouldn't be blaming Materazzi for it
2) Materazzi is a complete cunt who has no place on a football field.
It annoys the piss out of me that the Italians are so talented, but instead of playing like they should be they choose to tear around the pitch being complete and utter cunts.
Italy has been screwed out of matches more times than I care to remember.
McDoogle, care to elaborate on that? I can think of one match Italy has been "screwed" out of, against Korea at the last world cup where you really had no excuse not to win it in normal time.
It's about goddamn time some calls went Italy's way.
I'm not having that at all. Apart from the fact that every fan of every team uses that argument every time a bullshit call goes their way, you're insinuating that the ref should have been less than completely fair. Just accept you got a lucky penalty another ref probably wouldn't have given.
I'll admit I was wrong about Italy at this world cup. After the way they beat us, I wasn't convinced at all that they could even get past Ukraine, so I stand corrected on that.
However, I would have a lot more goodwill for the Italians if they weren't a team full of dirty, cheating, spitting pricks who play boring, shitty football, moan at the ref after every decision and have a fuckwit fan base. Other than that, fair play to you.
If Maternazi hadn't have taken a massive dive then the game wouldn't have been stopped & nobody would have seen the replay of it. If I was him I wouldn't go around calling people terrorists, because in WWII his country was alligned with Hitler & Germany.
Second of all, who the fuck headbutts somebody in the chest? You're meant to do it to their head, as that's where you get maximum impact.
Thirdly, Italians are cheats and should be banned from living. (Except for the chicks who are fucken sexy)
