View Full Version : Benoit/Jericho Idea

How does this sound for an idea at NYR. It won't happen, but it's nice to dream.

Anyway, I was just thinknig before "When was the last time Jericho and Benoit were opponents?" and then I thought back, and the most recent I can come ot is February 2001, at No Way Out, in a Fatal Fourway for the WWE Intercontinental Championship (X-Pac and Eddie Guerrero were also in the match). Is this correct, or is there some obvious date I have missed? If it is true, then Benoit vs. Jericho is something quite fresh and could be done well if given the chance.

Basically, I'd mark out if before the Elimination Chamber, in the lockerrom, Jericho approaches Benoit and talks about how Jericho despised Benoit, and when he beat him in that Ladder Match four years ago, he thought he'd earned Benoit's respect, and when be beat Benoit again in that Fatal Fourway at No way Out, he thought there was no way Benoit could deny who the better man was. Then Jericho goes on to talk about how Benoit put himself in front of Jericho to challenge Austin for the WWE Championship, while Jericho was stuck with the IC Title he beat Benoit for in the first place.

Y2J tells Benoit that for the last four years a rage has been swelling up inside him, and at first it came from a rivalry, in which Jericho proved he was the better man, but now it has evolved into something much, much more. Jericho has been seen as Benoit's "lackey" for the last few months, and the last time they were seen together in early-mid 2001 they were in similiar roles. But Jericho was just keeping Benoit in his sights, waiting for that announced match with Benoit vs. Jericho somewhere in its texts. Jericho then vowes to take Benoit to Hell and back.

I can't describe it well, but I have a vision where Benoit and Jericho could really evolve into a Triple H/Michaels type of feud in coming weeks. Jericho could just say that although he's been seen as an ally of Benoit for the last few years, he despises him, and will do everything humanly possible to make sure he doesn't get to leave that Chamber at all.

Do you think it would work? I'm not the biggest Jericho fan in the world (although I hope he wins the Chamber on Monday), so I'm not sure how he would make it sound Jericho-y, but I think its one of those things that doesn't need to be jazzed up, just have Jericho (or Benoit if you want to do it in reverse) rekindle a feud between the two with a simple, yet emotional, backstage promo.

I can see this ending in a "I Quit"match at WM21.

The buildup seems a little awkward, especially since Benoit has been the one looking lower than Jericho recently, at least IMO. I think a feud could work, but it's still sort of fresh. On the other hand, maybe it's time to turn Benoit heel, but don't water it down.

I dunno... it's not a bad idea, but I probably wouldn't go with it now.

I know what you mean, and it was just awkward writing it, but I would like ti if Benoit walked in on Jericho doing up his boots, and they had a conversation a bit like this:

Benoit: Jericho, you got my back tonight? We need to make sure Triple H doesn't survive long enough to team up with Batista.
Jericho: Woah, woah, what, do you think I'm your friend or something, Bitchwa (insert better name here)? In case you don't remember four years ago, I was kicking your toothless ass over the IC Championship, and I did that quite well if I say so myself, and tonight I get to kick your ass in an Elimination Chamber over the World Heavyweight Championship.
Benoit: What the Hell has....
Jericho: What the Hell has gotten into me? Is that what you were going to ask? What the Hell has gotten into you? Most of the Jerichoholics think I'm going first tonight, I'm getting the boot out of Hell first. They think I'm going to lose my match. And what's worse they think you're going to win. *Chuckle* Over my dead body.

Jazz that up a bit, and you have a bit on tension in the match, and it could go from there. Hopefully with Benoit winning the Rumble for the second year in a row (I miss those days), and Jericho vs. Benoit in a match at WrestleMania for the World Heavyweight Championship (after Jericho wins the EC, which won't happen, but I can dream). :y:

To be honest, it would work just as well if Benoit won the EC, and Jericho won the RR.

Jericho needs to be babyface now. He had his run as a heel and the company badly needs a fresh babyface. Jericho is a guy people want to get behind but have no real reason too. No matter how much the company buries him, he still looks like a star.

Never going to happen. WWE bringing up history? That goes against their very principles.

It's a cool idea though, and I would love to see another Bentoit/Jericho feud.

I agree. Jericho is better as a face than a heel in the WWE, and it would be a shame to see him swap sides, but maybe Benoit can play the robotic heel in the feud?

As Gouda said, it won't happen, but even if just used to add a little friction to the Elimination Chamber match, it would be worth it, IMO.

I doubt they'd refer all the way back to 4 years ago. If you remember, HHH beat Benoit at No Mercy 2000, and now they say Benoit's a man HHH has never beaten. :-\

That's true. I guess they meant for the World Heavyweight Championship. :-\
