Aight here is the thing. Which would have been more beneficial for Austin's future in '97? Winning the title from Sid in the main event at WrestleMania 13 or his match against Bret at WrestleMania.

The way I see it, sometimes, well really a lot of times winning the world title can do wonders for you. Elevate a guy and all that. Having Austin win it at WrestlMania 13 from Sid? Well sure he would be world champion but that would be it. Sid doesn't really have the tools to really make a bonafide star, even if he drops the title to the guy on the grandest stage of them all. So Austin winnin the title at WrestleMania 13 really wouldn't have done too much for his career in the future cause he still would have been seen as just that guy.

Now what actually would up happenin at WrestleMania 13 going against Bret. The way I see it you have the King of the Ring moment that started Austin 3:16 back in '96. Then there was his match against Bret at Survivor Series '96. But Austin became bonafide after his match against Bret. He showed that he was truly one tough SOB. That match was a stepping stone to his future.

So... which match would have given him the greatest benefits in the future?
his match against Bret or winnin the title from Sid?

The match with Bret.

I'm glad it went that way.

His match with Bret was unreal and one of the greatest matches I've ever seen. The 3-5 minutes in the Sharpshooter made him one bad-ass son of a bitch

He wouldn't of been as popular if he beat Sid for the title.

:nono:
i havent seen it...except 4 the footage of him in the sharpshooter.

I liked his match against HBK in about '96 or '97, when the down-syndrome kid was next to the ring...the ending sucked tho

Aussie man, you have to see it. Maybe if you dont mind downloading matches from the video thread someone, or me, will post it up for you.

Anyways, I think the answer is quite obvious. Just take a look at the mans career. It was quite beneficial.
The whole feud with Bret was greatness and cemented Austin as a very credible star on the map of pro wrestling. I believe after that match anyways at wrestlemania, that most fans felt like they just watched their main event. I know Sid and Taker headlined, but really..we know the score here.
That match was just great storytelling.

Hands down, the Bret match at WM was the better scenerio for him. Sid sucks and has sucked.

You know, funny part is, back when WCW was unbearable...Sid was main eventing the show against Nash and Goldberg.

You have to go with the I quit match. The I quit match defines Stone Cold Steve Austin Charcater. Every time I think of Austin I think of how he would rather pass out then tap out to the sharpshooter.

Also the Bret Austin feud is the best feud ever IMO.

This has nothing to with the topic, but Bret says his match with Austin at WM was his favorite match.

I love the image of Austin with the blood on his face trying to get out of the Sharpshooter :y:

Indeed, that made Austin and cemented Bret's greatness.
