Over the top dq

I remember when I first started watching wcw they had a rule that if you threw your oponent over the top you would be disqualified. Anyone know why they did that?

I dont know why the rule was around but I do know that it was also WWE. They both got rid of it like around 98 I think. I just remember thinking how stupid it was.

It was gone way before 98. I think WCW had it until about 95 though.

nwa started it and bill watts had the no jumping off the top rope rule which was the dumbest damn thing

WWE never had the rule.

I'd assume the rule was just for protection. Rather than just telling the wrestlers not to throw each other over the top, they made it a "rule" so the crowd new what was going on. Same with that "no jumping off the top rope" rule WCW had years ago. :nono:

I remember when the NWA was in the WWF for a bit and the Headbangers got screwed out of the tag titles because of that top rope rule :mad:

It was a dumb rule rule but it made for some interesting cheating spots, besides the neat thing about it is if done right it makes simple over the top rope spots seem like awesome events because of the rareity.

I remember a WWF match which was the Steiner Brothers defending the Tag Team titles against the Quebecers in a Canadian rules match, or Québec rules or something like that. I remember the rules to the match being clearly explained to avoid confusion, but this also clearly indicated to the smart fans that the Steiners would lose by DQ or count-out.

Piledrivers are illegal.
Aerial moves from the top rope are illegal.
Throwing opponents over the top rope is illegal.
Championships can change hands by count-out or DQ.

The Quebecers won the match, and therefore the titles, by DQ when Scott Steiner hit Jaques Rougeau with Johnny Polo's ice hockey stick. We mustn't forget that this was back in the good old days when there were good tag teams in the wrestling world and only one Tag Team title per organisation, which actually meant something, but I digress ...

a bunch of wrestling organizations had that rule. I remember i think it was AWA back in the early mid 90's. Tito Santana was like their only champ. Short-lived,.

It was mainly done to make the matches seem more legit and old school hence why Bill Watts had a hard on for it. It runs along the lines of the Lord Alfred Hayes rules of wrestling such as being unable to use the ropes for any sort of momentum, etc.
