After reading all these post about favourite mayches it got me thinking what makes a match great. Is it a specfic spot like a move of the top of the cage or Hulk slamming Andre. Is it a title change, and gimmick match or just 2 mega stars going head to head.

It's a combination of a lot of things.

The crowd reaction, the technical quality, what's at stake, the stipulation, where it takes place, etc.

Granted, not every great match as ALL of those, but they're all factors. You look at a match like Hogan vs. Andre and wrestling wise it wasn't good, but both of them were HUGELY over, and it was the main event of Wrestlemania. Now it's considered one of the greatest WWE matches of all time.

yeah there is a combination.

Look at Shane vs. Kurt Angle from King of the Ring. Awesome awesome match. Shane's not really a wrestler, but it had a lot of everything in it.

Bret vs. Austin at WM 13, it had the moves, it had the drama, it had the whole thing.

Rock vs. Hogan WM X8 - not a technical match but it was an awesome match just cause who was in it.

It really lies in the eyes of the watcher.

Well I think the build up does alot before hand, if it hypes up to be the greatest match ever, then it will push the wrestlers to live up to it. Most of the time it does, but sometimes it doesn't.

It depends on what kind of match is taking place first. For example, Shane vs Angle was an amazing match mainly due to the two spots which took place. First, the one through the glass. Now even if Shane had gone through the first time, it still would have been a great spot, but when he fell on his head the first time, it just kind of added to it. The second was the Angleslam off the top rope. This has to be my number 1 bump/spot in any match. I think what made it so great is that it had never been seen before. A real holy shit moment there.

So I think seeing moves/spots that we have never seen before helps, and having two huge stars go against each other also gives it a hand (Rock vs Austin is the first that springs to mind)
