For the one millionth time it seems, Jericho is the only one of the level of the Rock. They both can take a shit in the middle of the ring and make it interesting.
Actually I'd go as far as to say Flair is up there also.

Well yes and no. To me, you can't just look at mic skills in one way. Rock was great at getting the crowd to pop and chant along, but I don't think Rock ever told a "story" on the mic. He was like the DJ who's job is to get the crowd going and pump them up. Then he would make fun of guys like a stand up comedian and the crowd would laugh.
Ok, but they you have a Jake Roberts, who drew the crowd in and just mesmorized them as he spoke. When Jake spoke, you listend and you paid attention. His delivery of certain phrases and words was beyond good.
Then you have a guy like Pillman, who was kind of a biblical preacher of the mic. He had that raspy voice, that evil smile, the obnoxious expressions and his delievry would go from high to low and the crowd would eat it up.
Then you have a Blassie/Heenan, who could get a piece of string over if he wanted too.
So there's all kinds of mic work

Rock's shit was stale for years until his most recent heel turn. Like LC said he's great at interacting with the crowd, but most of his stuff was the same thing over and over IMO. As far as pure mic skills go, I would put Triple H, JBL, and Foley above the rock any day.

HHH is one of the best mic people in the WWE. He gets the fans so pissed off at him every time he goes out there.
Foley is certainly one of the most versataile promo guys. He can do serious stuff or comedy just as well as the other. A real genius on the mic.
As for the Rock I found him stale for a few years as well but, especially when he was heel, he was the best.

Yes, I'm so anti-HHH that I can't see how taking five minute to say a single sentence and being boring is called being good on the mic.

Flair
Jake Roberts
Raven
Steve Austin
Mick Foley
were all better than the Rock.
I hold The Rock pretty much at the top because so much of his stuff was improv and I have great respect for a talent like that, and it pretty much only comes naturally. Mick Foley, Ric Flair, Chris Jericho and possibly Stone Cold are the only wrestlers who are in the same league.

Rock is the only wrestler that I have seen who can really get a crowd going. That's the most important aspect of a promo. When Rock talks people listen
Loose Cannon
03-21-2005, 05:50 PM
No, I disagree. When Rock talks, people get ready to pop and chant, they don't "listen" so to speak. They may listen for catch phrases and comedy lines, but that's not the same as listening to a Jake Roberts get on that mic and tell a story to an audience as the audience sat there is silence in awe.
Austin in the WWE can be argued in the same way as Rock.
But if you own that ECW DVD, put it in right now, yea right now, and watch the first Austin promo. Now that's how you deliver a promo without any catch phrases or cheap pops.

I'll say this. Rock is the best "attention getter" in the history of the business as far as promos go. He's the "life of the party" kind of promo. I never liked them though cause he did the same thing every week.

Like LC said, Rock is a great hype-man, no doubt, but he isn't much to brag about in the way of promos. His stuff is repetitive, and is basically typical meaningless material over and over. It's all cheap pops for taglines and he doesn't DRAW the audience into the promo for any reason other than to listen for a catchphrase - like the secret word of the day on Pee Wee's Playhouse.

Hmmmm, people that I would rank with Rock....hmmmmmmmm, in no paticular order:
Mick Foley

Paul Heyman (though not a wrestler)
As far as honorable mention: Trish Stratus is the best female on the mic I've ever seen.

I agree that the Rock is great at hyping people up, but he was always very reptitive. The few times he actually threw in something new you ended up with phrases about purple monkey's nipples and cockatoos assholes, etc.
Take a look at Jericho back in WCW when he was doing his loophole bit, it's some of the best mic work I've ever seen. Jericho tends to be a bit repetitive in the WWE, but I'd rank him far above the rock in what is actually said on the mic. Others in this category would be Raven and Foley. Those 2 in ECW were brilliant.
People can argue forever on which style is better, but that's a different topic I suppose. Do you want somebody who says the same thing and gets the crowd into it so they can repeat it? or do you want somebody who entertains (or gets heat from) the crowd with fresh material every night?

At the risk of upsetting a fair bit of people on this board, I really don't see what's so great about Christians mic skills. He just whines a little, says something that 9th graders would say, and that's about it.
As for the best. I agree with most of what people have said but I gotta throw the Hot Rod in the mix. Every time I saw him I wanted him to grab the mic.

It's always better to have a heel as a champ because it makes viewers tune in to see if the good guy will be beat the bad guy who steals victories anyway he can. Who else on Raw are you going to have do it? Edge? Yeah, right. Ric Flair? Great past champ but even Flair understands the buisness needs to progress. Kane? He's lost so many matches really nobody really takes him seriously. Plus the last/only time he was champ was in like 1998, seven years ago. Christian? He's good and a heel champion in the making but his time isn't right now. He needs more build up. A heel Randy Orton? He might be able to get away with it but from I've read he wants to stay as a face and the fans are responding to him less and less. Who's left? Sylvan Granier? Rob Conway? Tomko? Snitzky? And I wouldn't call it outrageous when it's a FACT that HHH has been on top for almost 7 years now and for the last 3 years, business has been in the shitter. KNOW WHY? NO NEW STARS. The WWE is finally learning how to "make" guys the past couple of months.

Thank you, LC, for proving my point. You state several times that "that's FACT" or "it's a fact" and when in actuallity it's just your opinion. You have no actual facts to back up your claims. Everything you said is your opinion. Just because your opinion matches up to some other people's opinion doesn't make it fact. You site the decline in business and funny how that coincides with the competition being eliminated and WWE ending the Attitude era and moving in the new "Family Wrestling Show" direction. Just because you flip channels when HHH is on doesn't mean everybody does, so that's hardly a fact. Look, I was just trying to express my opinion and didn't expect to get this kind of heat for it, and I have no desire to go round and round about this.

I really don't see how anyone could NOT consider Rock the greatest mic worker of all time. BY FAR? I don't know. I think there have been some who have atleast approached him in the history of wrestling. (Gene Snitsky being the most notable of course.)
I just can't take you seriously with your last sentence there. Gene Snitsky? You name fucking Gene Snitsky....Gene fucking Snitsky as one guy who has approached the Rock in the HISTORY of wrestling pertaining to mic work. Are you serious? Just spit on about 1000 other guys why don't you. That might be the craziest comment I've heard on here in the last 2 years I've posted on TPWW. No offense..of course :)

Why is it so important that you prove HHH sucks?
There's no need for us to prove anything - he just does!

I would rather listen to The Rock cut a promo more than anyone else by far. He always got the crowd into it, and most of his stuff was improv. That's why he's the best IMHO.

When it comes to mic skills, Rock is the man on the poster.
Many superstars have had awesome mic skills: Austin, Hogan, etc... but nobody had a crowd in the palm of his hands during a promo like The Rock. He had countless catchphrases, quips, and poses, and the fans knew everyone of them. It's not often you can get damn near every person in the arena to shout out a phrase in unison like they are singing.
With that said, it's a shame The Rock was never fully embraced as a cult-like hero. The fans would NEVER turn on Austin. They NEVER turned on Hogan. But for some reason, they would get funny on The Rock, like they did several times throughout his career by chanting "rocky sucks", even when he was a face.
But when it came to working the mic, I don't think anyone has surpassed Rock.

They NEVER turned on Hogan.
Fans turned on Hogan in WCW when he first joined NWO. The crowd even was throwing things at him too.
The Rock is number 1 on my list, but to say he miles above everybody on the mic might be an over statment. Austin, Kurt Angle, Foley, Flair, and Hogan are way up there too.
Also I think Bischoff is really good to on the mic does anyone else agree with me on that? Or do people here just think that he really isn't anything special?

LOL, never turned on Hogan? Obviously you didn't watch WCW 1995 and even early 90's WWF they began turn on him a little.

Seriously though. Snitsky on the mic... it's like looking into the face of God and having him say "You are my greatest creation... and if your life sucked, it wasn't my fault."

I think SNitsky proves there IS no God.
