CHURCH CAST AS VILLAIN FOR SPIDER-MAN 3
Press Release
Thomas Haden Church, who was most recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Sideways, has been cast as Spider-Man's new archenemy in the next chapter of the Spider-Man adventure, it was announced by director Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad.
Spider-Man 3, which is scheduled for release on May 4, 2007, will reunite the successful team that was responsible for the first two blockbuster films. The franchise has grossed more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales and the new film will again reteam director Raimi, producers Ziskin and Arad, and actors Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as M.J.
Production on Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to begin early next year.
"In addition to the on-going relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life," said Raimi. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis and we all look forward to working with him."
The identity of the new villain is being kept secret and while speculation is rampant about which character is being called into action, the studio will not comment on the casting beyond confirming Church.
Since his star-making role in Sideways, Church has been in demand. The actor is voicing one of the characters in the upcoming animated film Charlotte's Web, and he recently appeared in Columbia Pictures' Spanglish. Church previously appeared in such other films as George of The Jungle, 330 Miles to Graceland and Tombstone. In 2003, he also starred in, co-wrote and directed the comedy Rolling Kansas. From 1990 to 1995, Church played Lowell Mather in the TV series Wings, and starred in the Fox comedy Ned and Stacey from 1995 to 1997.

well they could easily change actors. Billy Dee Willaims played Harvey Dent in Batman but they went with Tommy Lee Jones to play Two-Face in Batman Forever

Yeah, and Gotham city was mad homosexual neon in the third one.
There's much more continuity within Spider-Man. They've even managed to get through two movies with the same Spider-Man...
In the 5 Batman movies, we've had what, 8 Batmans?
*5 counting the new movie...

Are you talking about the movie version of the characters or the comic books? If it's the comic books then I have to disagree since Batman comics have been around a lot longer and a lot more events are important like Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Dick Grayson, Bane, Babs getting shot, and much more. If we're talking about movies then Spidey definitely has more continuity. For now at least since I hear that they might stop at 3 and maybe Bale will go on with this new series.

Probably the same way they could make a wussy Punisher, a muppet Hulk, and a Riverdancing Wolverine.

The most demanded villain for this movie is Venom...everyone wants Venom to be the villain for this film and with this "Rumored" (and I mean that in a big way since it definently wont be the last) it would seem wrong to not have Venom.
I thought Venom was supposed to be played by Brock or what ever his name was...I think he was the guy in Spiderman who got in a fight with him in the hallway.
Anyways...I would like to see Venom, Carnage (which cant really happen with out venom) or Mysterio.

Raimi has said in the past he isn't keen on doing the Venom story, and would leave that to another director. He said the next villain will be the one that is most logical in relation to the story of Peter Parker and his journey.
But who knows, Raimi could just say fuck it and choose Venom.

I wouldn't be suprised to see them hold off on Venom til the next movie. Sony once said they plan on doing seven films. If that is still the issue, then I don't think they will, because it's going to sell more tickets the longer they wait, and the longer they wet people's appetites. I also think Church is alittle too old for the role.
Personally I think it will be sandman. Not only has Raimi expressed great interest in seeing the Sandman on screen, but so has lead actor, Toby Mcguire. I would say it's a safe bet on Sandman.

Well if they are going to do 7 they will have to bring in some new guys, so either Blade, The Punisher or DareDevil could be possiblilites
my only concern is that all the main actors are signed up to 3 film deals and does anyone think that Tobey and Kirsten will stay on?

Well I'll be. Newest news on the villain(s):
Sideways star Thomas Haden Church's villainous alter-ego in the new Spider-Man movie has been revealed, if internet gossip is to be believed. The Oscar nominee will play Venom in Spider-Man 3 in 2007, according to the Pressconnects.Com website. Venom won't be the only Spider-Man arch-enemy in the second sequel - Daniel Gillies' John Jameson character will become Manwolf in the film, according to the reports.
------------------------------------------------
Again though, this is still just internet rumor so until Raimi officially announces something I'm skeptic. However IMO bringing in Venom is a bad move. His character deserves proper setup and it cannot be done in one film. Than again, I have the utmost faith in Raimi and am confident he'd do it in a well thought out way, unless the studio pushes for otherwise.

As great as that sound, somethings seems, a little wrong...in all the things I've read, nothing has said anything about James Franco coming back and becoming The Green Goblin 2, since it was teased at the end of the last movie

Exactly what I was saying before. Venom is too important to do in just one film. Also, they are very tight-lipped about this issue, and plan on being that way for a while yet. So I wouldn't take this rumor very seriously.

Hmm Venom, I wonder if they will play it out like the comics did.
Spiderman gets the suit first, try's it out, doesnt like it because he starts to turn crazy, suit chooses Brock who turns into Venom.
Done right and it could lead to Carnage. If they did the movie about Carnage based loosely around Maximum Carnage, that could be real cool...was my favorite series of comics. Had a lot of characters though, and was graphic. Dont think they will move into that direction at all.

Yeah exactly.
I think if they want to do Venom, then Spiderman gets the suit in this movie (part 3) and in the next movie is when Eddie Brock gets the suit and becomes Venom. Cramming it all in one movie would be very risky.

And carnage sucks. There are so many other prominent spidey villians that would just be much cooler.
Personaly I kind of want to see Sandman translated to the big screen. Venom may be a lot cooler than sandman in the comics, but with movie special effects what they are, I think they could do some really cool stuff with Sandman.

No. Venom should not be in it. If you want to jack off over a shitty movie with tons of pointless action buy a Jacky Chan flick. If you want to jack off over a shitty movie that has tons of special effects, go out and buy a Will Smith flick. But don't ruin my fun if I want to see this franchise actually show everybody up by continuously getting better as each sequel comes. Venom makes no sense in terms of the storyline that's been built up, and the ONLY reason they'd add him is so little fucks like you could beat off in line outside the theater waiting to throw your money away.
THe storyline seems to be moving towards Harry Osborne wanting to get revenge on Spiderman. The only villains that could possibly be connected are Harry as the Green Goblin, which seems out now that they have a new actor, the Hob-goblin which I can see this Church guy playing, or the Scorpion (since he was pretty much made into a super-powered hitman in the comics).

Because we live in an ADD, instant gratification society. Venom is one of the biggest bad guys in the comics, so everyone wants to see it for the instant orgasm factor.
Storytelling is for losers. We want George Lucas doing our Spider-Man movies so we can get a lot of eye candy, asskicking, and the depth of a contact lense.

I think Scorpion, Chameleon and Sandman are all legit bets for Haden Church to play in #3. I wouldn't be suprised if the third one is about Osbourne trying to get revenge on Spiderman by sending hired assassins after him.
I don't see them having a whole movie devoted to Osbourne as the Green Goblin since the action sequences (which are a big part of it) would look repeptitive.
