View Full Version : What do you like about wrestling?

With so much negativity on the boards towards wrestling (yes, I realize most of it is warranted) I thought that my first decent (I hope) post back in the wrestling forum would be different. What do you like about wrestling, right now? No DX was great, no nostalgic memories, just what you like now. Even if it's something small, like the tag ropes being back or how say wrestler A has such a gorgeous drop kick, it's simply poetry in motion. So at least 5 things. I'll go first.
John Cena
This guy is simply on fire, on point. He's developing his in ring skills while becoming one of the top favorites on the mic. His freestyles are great and he has the image that is needed to bring an audience in. It's been said before that a hip hop culture is what's "in" today and Cena does a great job capitalizing on it. Hard to believe his gimmick started out as a joke (Vanilla Ice.)
Stevie Night Heat
Great gimmick which WWE is using to progress various storylines with Stevie and Victoria even. It's a great way to get the otherwise under utilized Richards over. Stevie has always been on of my favorites, since ECW actually. And for once it seems like WWE actually intend on using him right. I really am enjoying the evolution to faces of Stevie and Victoria ... hell it may actually make me interested in a feud that has Test involved.
Chris Jericho & Trish Stratus "As the world turns"
Yeah so it's turned into a soap opera (yes, I know wrestling already is one) but it's interesting as hell in my opinion. Jericho is incredible on the mic and great at playing up his role and well Trish. Well, she does a decent job of playing a scorned woman. I like the turns, some as obvious as they may have been were still very well timed. Overall if the writers continue to tie the storyline together as well as they have so far, it's going to work out great for all involved.
Shawn Michaels & Triple H.
Say what you will about the two, but facts are facts. They can go in the ring. Shawn always shows up in his matches, and Triple H when properly motivated, has some of the best psychology in the business. The match they had on Raw was great, and I always enjoy the whole "game of one up" storyline for some reason. And while I know the ending is likely quite predictable. I'm still looking forward to the match at the Rumble.
Chris Benoit
Benoit is simply put, the shit. He can work with anyone, any type of match and make it a show stealer. He's great in the ring, and his storyline with Heyman is great and has gone a long way in getting him over. His match with the FBI was great (even though I hate seeing Nunzio bitched out). If he does well in the Rumble (winning it, or just getting robbed) the next main eventer is finally fully established. Like he should have been a while ago.
Now I'm just going to list some little things that make me smile.
The little things
The tag ropes.
The intensity Benoit puts into his whole "cut throat" taunt.
Shawn Michaels' nip ups. (classic)
Lance Storm finally being able to use all of his offense as a face.
Jerrelle Clark's 630 splash move. Frickin amazing.
The FBI running the betting pool a few weeks back, WWE is using logic people.
Paul Heyman as GM.

Will someone please tell me what the hell a tag rope is because I don't think I have ever seen 1 in my life.

It's the little rope attached to the turnbuckle that the partner on the apron holds for a tag to be legal. Also can be used as a weapon to choke.

ok, umm
Hardcore Holly's Dropkick
Seriously, when he does it good, it's sheer poetry in motion.
The Music
I have the last 3 cds that WWE brought out (Vol. 5, Anthology, Forceable Entry) and chances are I'll even buy the Originals one. Its the energy thats in the music.
The Hurricane
HE BEAT THE ROCK FOR **** SAKE. Lose Rosey and push The Hurri-Hurri-Hurricane more. (yes, I am a mark)
The Seanton Bomb
Although I havent seen it in a while.
and lastly
The Cruiserweight Division
Even though its not overly good right now, its good.

Oh I thought they just had to have their hand on the turnbuckle, I've never noticed any ropes.

Likes:
John Cena: This is definately my favorite guy in wrestling right now. From the raps, to the attitude, to the throwback jersys, to the best entertainer on Smackdown, this guy is the best.
Randy Orton and Evolution: Orton is my second fav superstar right now and I love the cocky attitiude he carries with him. Evolution is a great stable also.
Cade and Jindrack: I hope they get back on Raw soon cause they are a good team.

I just love wrestling all around. I'm more into the techinical matches than hardcore matches though. Angle/Benoit in person was great to watch. No weapons needed, and everyone was on the edge of their seats.

Glad to see one of my topics ressurected (well, in a sense).
The Best talent in the world: some of the wrestlers are quite frankly, awesome. Instead of making different entries, I'll just point 'em out en masse. Angle, BEnoit, Cena, Jericho, 90% of the Cruisers, HBK (What can I say, he still entertains me), and quite a few other people. I may REALLY hate having a few people on the show, but there's some awesome talent.
The production values: Oh, I'll bitch about originals, but generally, when they do music, they do it right. And usually, they do it right. The pyros and sets are top notch.
The Storylines they don't fu</>ck up: When they do it right, they REALLY can do some good storylines.
The Roster Split: I thought this was a stupid stupid idea. I was blown away by how they've done it. Plus, it allows me to keep my HHH bitching to one night a week. The Cruisers get showcased (usually), and we get to see a lot better wrestling on Smackdown!, that we probably wouldn't be seeing if not for the roster split/brand extensions.

The Women's Division
I love the fact that the "Divas" can wrestle now (with a few exceptions). Molly Holly, Victoria, Gail Kim, Ivory, Jacqueline, Trish Stratus, Jazz... There is so much legit talent in the Women's Division right now that I can't remember a better time for it.
Jonathan Coachman
Yeah, I know, his announcing skills aren't great, but when you have someone who vocalizes on-air how I feel about how bad JR and the King have become, it's a mark-out moment for me. The Coach plays the heel announcer role to a tee, and I would love to see him replace Ross at the RAW table permanently.
The Broken Arrow
Haas and Benjamin's double-team specialty is awesome when done right. The height that Shelton gets before he comes crashing down on an opponent's spine is jaw-dropping, and it looks painful as hell.
Evolution, Eric Bischoff, and Sean O'Haire's theme songs
The three best themes in wrestling IMO.
Shawn Michaels
I've been an HBK mark since the mid-'90s, and am amazed he can still go. Even at an...advanced age, he still is better in the ring than 80% of the roster. Spectacular.
Crowd signs
Sure, a lot of them are held by marks, but there are always a few ("Nidia can't see me!" "Football is fake") that get me laughing.
Velocity
An hour a week where I can watch Spanky, Paul London, Sean O'Haire, Ultimo Dragon, Kyo Dai and all the other underutilized SmackDown talent? Sign me up!

The art of pro wrestling itself. As an actor (believe me, you've never heard of me and probably never will), I know that suspending the audience's disbelief is insanely hard to do, and that's what pro wrestlers have to do every single time they're on the show, be it a match, promo, or whatever. Most plays and performances are choreographed well in advanced and rehearsed to perfection, not to mention we get to use our voices for the primary means of storytelling. These guys go out there week in and week out and tell their stories with an absolutely astounding level of physicality, and since most of it is improvised, it's even more impressive. The whole concept of this form of acting-disguised-as-sport just captivates me, and even if the conditions reach all-time lows, I highly doubt I'll ever stop watching.

Oh, also, I love the captions that come as a result. I don't know if other people would exactly count it, but it's a by-product of wrestling, and part of the fun of coming here every week. Both in making my own and in seeing what other people can come up with.

John Cena- The REAL next big thing for the WWE. You know why, of course. He's got the gimmick, the charisma, and the "IT" factor that can draw the mainstream popularity back into the WWE. Any casual fan will find him entertaining, but his raps got to be sharp or else he'll sound lame. So far so good.
Evolution- Great image as stylers and profilers. I still think RAW should revolve more around Evolution, similar to how the nWo was handled in WCW.
Chris Jericho- He is THE MAN! Regardless of shitty booking, he still manages to entertain us. Sure he ain't the Jericho of 2000 (which btw, could've been even more popular than The Rock if pushed right) but this thing with Trish showcases Jericho in a different way that we aren't used to.
Goldberg- He looked damn good with the World strap, but unfortunately McMahon and his cronies are just idiots.
Randy Orton- His cockyness sells. He brings credibility to the IC strap. That and he looks damn good with it too.
Brock Lesnar- He's winning me over as a heel right now, but it still ain't better than his heel run in 2002. His heel run in 2002 was more believable because no one wanted to see a "rookie" win the strap so fast. Rock vs. Brock proved that the writers could actually book a good feud once and a while.
And my favorite thing about wrestling overall......Theodore Long!!!!! He is hilarious with his lingo, playa, and he just oozes charisma. They should honestly hook him up with Booker T. That can make Book fresh again as he is just stale as **** right now, holla!

- John Cena
- Eddie Guerrero
- The Guerrero feud. Even though I was opposed to it because Eddie gets depushed, they've done an excellent job taking their time and really building it up. Plus the emotion Eddie and Chavo displayed last Thursday was amazing and really added to the intensity of it all.
- Brock Lesnar (yeah, I'm a mark)
- Dark Undertaker coming back (been a UT mark since he came into the company)
- Benoit getting pushed
- Jericho and Trish
- Kyo Dai (well, mainly Jimmy Yang/Akio)
- no McMahons recently

-The Undertaker coming back (hopefully brings back Paul Bearer)
-Debuts when done right, like Jericho's and Taz's
-HBK
-Knowing that people bust their asses, injure themselves, take years off their lives, some of them have their careers end just to entertain us and have a crowd go home happy
