This subject has been one that I have been wanting to discuss for awhile now. With all the congressional hearings about steroid use, this has become a hot topic. I believe that some people turn a blind eye to it in pro wrestling. Obviously, some of these guys are so lean and muscular that its almost impossible to believe they aren't using steroids(ahem-Chris Masters). However, unlike baseball and other sports, using steroids in pro wrestling doesn't boost abilities, its just for asthetic purposes(otherwise Ultimate Warrior would be the greatest wrestler of all time). All joking aside this is a serious issue. Over the last few years there have been a number of suspicious deaths that point to steroid use. Do you believe that steroid use is OK in wrestling because it does not equate to wrestling ability? Should steroid regulations be enforced by a government or athletic agency? Or does it just not matter at all because wrestling isn't considered a pure sport?

Why should it be less acceptable to use steroids if you're a wrestler? I'm not joking, I'm seriously missing the point there.

It shouldn't be less or more acceptable. Steroid use is illegal across the board, even if you are a high school kid trying to get an extra boost. Therefore it should be enforced across the board.

Steroid use isn't illegal my friend.

However, it's use for athletic enhancement is.

Get the facts first amigo.

Sorry, I was simply replying to this with a question of why I should feel it to be different.

The answer depends on your point of view. If you look at it from the point of view of pure sportsmanship, then it matters in one and not the other. However, with upgrades to baseball equipment, more serious training regimens, the argument of sportsmanship goes out the window.

I don't think it's OK at all - no matter what sport you are in.

I believe that there should be regulations put on these guys, and more tests and rules [that are actually enforced]. However, this crap has been going on for so long (just talking wrestling here - though other sports apply) that it is basically ignored.

As far as if it matters, I guess it depends on how you're asking. If it's asking if it matters to the general public, I'd say probably not. If you're asking if this matters to the government - I'd say probably not once again, unless this is a case that gets turned into a media spectacle, forcing them to act on it. It is obviously something that is encouraged by the promoters (not all of them in general, but it's safe to say that McMahon and company do) - so it's fine by him as well.

I think it is ridiculous, unnecessary, unhealthy, and is just total bullshit.

Probably doesn't matter too much to the overal wrestling fandom either. Mostly because most of us have gornw up on pro wrestling that involves the use of steroids. Partially because it's easy to ignore the majority of steroid users for the few SUPER obvious ones.

the fact is wrestling is not considered a sport so it is in fact not illegal to use them in wrestling BUT it is illegal to use steroids in states that have an atheltic commission

It is often overlooked, however, that black market drug trafficking of anabolic steroids was already illegal before anabolics became classified as controlled substances. Under 1988 legislation amending the Food and Drug Act, criminal penalties were specifically set forth for traffickers in anabolic steroids for non-medical reasons.

Steroids don't really help in wrestling, since its is a predetermined result.

BUT...there are tons of stories and anecdotal evidence out there that point towards numerous deaths being caused by the rampant steroid use in the WWF in the 80's. And I'm sure there is no overt policy posted up in WWE dressing rooms stating that "you need to be huge to get a push," but wrestlers aren't stupid. They see how being overly muscled is a sure way to at least get a shot at the main event. They see that even smaller workers like Eddie Guerrero and Rey Misterio put on muscle mass in order to help their look.

So basically there's an unspoken criteria which forces wrestlers to choose between their health and their career. And that's pretty disgusting. Steroids aren't giving anybody an unfair advantage, but people are dying nonetheless.

There were Congressional hearings on steroid use in wrestling during the 80's. I think if you looked, there is even more evidence now of steroid use being encouraged backstage in wrestling and specifically in the WWE. And considering there is no 'union' or 'collective bargaining to protect any of these athletes, I think somebody should look into it.

EVERYone pretty much uses steroids in pro wrestling, im not saying it cuz thats what i think, my dad has a friend that was roddy pipers professional bodyguard, he has appeared on a few nitros as well. He has told me a lot of stories of what wrestlers do on trips and stuff, he has confirmed to me that rvd is a huge pothead, and he says most wrestlers do in fact use steroids. This guy has told me some insane stories, including one of Mean Gene, some old kinda ugly chick saw all of the wrestlers sitting in a lounge, so she asked if they knew where Mean Gene's room was, cuz she wanted to meet him. Jericho and Benoit told her, so they followed her up there to see what Mean Gene would do. She knocks on the door, all the wrestlers are hiding, Mean Gene opens the door, looks at the chick, looks right and left, after not seeing anyone, she pulls her in and they had sex lol. He's told me so many stories, hes awesome.

Umm...actually...

From the National Institute on Drug Abuse:

"Possession of steroids is now punishable by up to 1 year in prison, and distribution can draw a sentence of up to 5 years and a fine of $250,000."

oh, also from the NIDA:

"[Anabolic Steriods are] legally available in the United States only by prescription. Anabolic steroid abusers obtain drugs that have been made in clandestine laboratories (sometimes with poor quality control standards), smuggled from other countries, or diverted illegally from U.S. pharmacies."

and

"Distinct from steroidal supplements. In the United States, supplements such as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and androstenedione (street name Andro) can be purchased legally without a perscription through many commercial sources including health food stores. They are often taken because the user believes they have anabolic effects."

So...um...steriods are ILLEGAL, period, according to the Feds UNLESS you have a prescription. And no doctor who wants to keep his liscence is going to issue steroids to enhance phsyical appearance. So they are illegal.

I don't know where this myth that anabolic steroids were legal started...but it's just that--a myth.

Don't believe me, check out: www.drugabuse.gov and www.steroidabuse.gov

There are no steroids in wrestling.
