View Full Version : Tag Team Titles: Are They Useless?

I've been thinking a lot lately and I totally believe that the Tag Team Championships (on both shows) are completely and utterly useless.
Remember back in the 90s we'd have so many teams gunning for those belts? The Smoking Gunns, the Body Donnas, LOD, New Age Outlaws, the Godwinns, the New Blackjacks, APA, Headbangers, Dudleys, Hardys, E and C....the list goes on.
Nowadays the belts either go to La Resistance and the Bashams (to give them a reason to wrestle and to hold the belts until the next big team) or a team of main eventers that just leads to a feud within that same team (examples: Benoit and Edge, Benoit and Angle, and now Eddie and Rey).
Does anyone here think these belts should go the way of the Hardcore Championship?

If they're not going to do anything to fix the state of the division, then yes. It should just go away.

I was actually thinking back a few mondays ago that maybe it was gonna pick up again. I believe it was that 3 way tag match between Regal/Tajiri Vs La Resistance Vs Maven/Simon Dean. I think they need to mix some tag teams together again to once again give us some good old tag matches. Im digging the whole Dean/Maven tag team right now. I think it will work good with Maven who is becoming a great heel. Plus the whole tag team way could fit in some of the stars that are just being done like Masters, Dean, Maven and any other new people coming in.

Speaking of the new guys, but not to stray too far off my topic....why are they all starting as heels? It's very rare to see a new guy come in and wow the crowd. Instead we get a few mediocre guys with instant heel persona.

It's easier to get people to hate you than like you. And since they are starting out and will likely change characters several times you might as well start with something easy and get practice with it so you can be good at whatever reaction your character will be aimed at down the road.
At least that's my opinion.
Back to the main topic - yes, the tag titles are useless. WWE barely has enough tag teams to fill one roster, let alone two. They'd be smart to draft all the tag teams to one show when the draft does indeed take place. That, or just get rid of the tag team division all together and concentrate more on the Cruiserweight Division on SD! and maybe create a new division on RAW (Hardcore, perhaps?).

Solution: Move teams to one show.
BTW: Tag Team Wrestling is big down in OVW and I heard they're calling a few of those teams up.

They were awesome as a team, but they were in Kurt Angle's shadow at the time.

I remember years ago I was so into tag team. From New Age Outlaws to E&C to Hardy Boys. Now I can't stand it because there are only three tag teams (Bashams, La Resistance, and Regal/Tajiri)...not counting Rey and Eddie b/c I don't really see them as a tag team duo..and it's so boring compared to other matches. I like one on one A LOT more.
God I miss the days of 2000 wrestling action. Hardyz, E&C, Dudleys, 2 Cool, Lo Down, Acolytes, Buchanan/Bossman, and Head Cheese were all top teams and the tag title was actually worth something.

it would take quite abit of work and focus but I'm sure prestige could be garnered again for the division if it was focused on a show.

I miss this too, but in my opinion, you have to go old school to find the great tag teams. Hart Foundation, British Bulldogs, Power and Glory, Strike Force and Demolition to name but a few. I'm not taking anything away from the Hardys, Dudleys, E&C, 2 Cool etc but the teams of the 1980s and the early 1990s are in a league of their own. When a team like Demolition held the titles, winning it from them actually meant something. And, if you think about it, a lot of people got their push by being members of tag teams first: Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Davey Boy Smith, Tito Santana, Rick Matel etc. Occasionally two singles stars shoved together in a tag team was special and would draw: Mega Powers (Hogan/Savage), Ultimate Maniacs (Warrior/Savage), Mega Maniacs (Hogan/Beefcake) but it's happening so often these days that the tag team division, and therefore the titles, is slowly fading away.

I agree with everybody that feels the Tag Belts should be on one show. But to go further, I think we need to see tag teams have actual feuds that last longer than 2 weeks. We need storylines for them. Also, I'm really tired of the belts changing hands every week.

And the Tag Team titles are the only ones that ever change hands on TV. The IC and US belts do too, but only very rarely and even then it's usually because the title holder is being pushed to Main Event status.

Here's what I think would help rejuvinate the tag scene...
1) Move the teams to one show. SD needs as much help as it can get, throw them on there.
2) Remove the "Tag" from tag team. Have all matches Tornado Tag rules. Personally, I think WWE should partially adopt the ECW style. Screw DQ's and count outs. Start the match as a normal tag match, if it degenerates into a tornado tag, so be it. If someone grabs a ladder, let it go. Table? Go for it. Not only does this mean more action, but it could help some teams, specifically the Dudley's, to gain some of the recognition they used to have.
3) Put the belts on a good heel tag team, have them dominate the scene for a while. Have them do promos saying they have beaten every team the WWE has and no one can beat them. Don't book them on the next PPV, but during the night have them come out and talk about how they're the best and that WWE doesn't even have a match for them tonight because they are so good. During the speech have something big happen, like two of the top people on the show form a team on the "spur of the moment" to take down the heels. Like, put RVD and Booker T back together..... and have them LOSE!! Yes, lose!!
Do near the same thing for the next couple of PPV's, have them come out and saying they don't have a match because WWE has no competition for them. They lay out an open challenege and successfully defend the belts again. Then on the next PPV after that, have a total underdog tag team come out. Some people who may need the help in getting over, Like Super Crazy and Tajiri :p and have them win.
Anyway, I think it would all work. They just need to make the belts mean something again. And make tag matches not so predictable and boring. No one wants to see a double clothesline that ends with the face tag member finally making a tag to his partner, after 10 minutes. Nobody wants to see the good guy trying to get into the ring to help his partner, but in effect is only allowing the heel team to double team his partner. That stuff might of worked 15 years ago, we need something new.
Besides the Tornado Tag rules part, that isn't a bad idea.

but if you did, then what would b the point of any tag team matches on the other show?...if u know what i mean?
frankly, 2 me, 2 sets of tag team belts makes just as much sense as 2 sets of world title belts.
i c no problem with it

Wait. You don't consider Rey Mysterio Jr. and Eddie Guerrero a tag team, but you consider William Regal and Yoshihiro Tajiri a tag team?

Doesn't make any sense to me when you got 2 teams going for a belt. With the World Titles, you have a lot more guys going for the belt. Having two World Titles don't make sense anyway.

I don't even know who the tag champs on eathier show are. And I watch Raw every week. I keep thinking La Resistance has them.

So what if a team wants to form up? Do we move the wrestlers to the other show, or what?
So we still have the main event 6-Man tags, even though the other show is the prominent tag division?
Basically, is tagging removed from one show entirely, or just the titles?

I only know Regal and Tajiri are champs because I saw Heat last night. On Smackdown, I keep thinking it's the Bashams. Mostly because I can't name another tag team on that show. Eddie and Rey? Doesn't help that both of them are trying to be #1 contenders.

No, tagging isn't removed from a show. They would lose like 50% of there matchups then. I would just put the tag belts for the "real" teams on one show. Cause when you have 2 teams going for one set of belts, it really makes the division seem worthless. I mean, how many times can I watch La Resistance vs whomever the babyface team is for the belts?
