Ok, so here is the latest installment:
90. Gang Starr- Mass Appeal (early 2001): This song has been slipping on my countdown (was in the 70s range), but it is still a great song. God, DJ Premier makes Gang Starr. If Guru had some other guy behind the beats, he would sound weak. But a good enough song to crack the top 90 nonetheless.
89. Common- One-Nine-Nine-Nine (Spring 1999): There was a period in 1999 when Common was on fire, and by on fire, I mean he was on two classic songs released like a few weeks apart from each other- both of them are on this list, and this is the second song of those two that came out (the other one comes much higher up in the countdown). I love the beat to this song, and Sadat X makes a nice cameo. Talib Kweli is also featured on this song and has a nice verse as well.
88. Rob D- Clubbed To Death (October 2000-January 2001, somewhere in there): Yeah, I didn't realize this song was on the Matrix Soundtrack until like 3 years after it came out. I actually remember hearing this song for the first time on a Nisaan Maxima Commercial, and so I downloaded it on Napster under the title "Nisaan Maxima Commercial". I have never gotten tired of this song- though I never really over-played it because it is so long (7 minutes, 26 seconds I believe). This is one of the most beautiful instrumentals of all time- the transitions are seemless, and the little singing voice is hella tight (the "oooh" thing). I always picture a murder scene in my mind whenever I hear this song. Badasssssssssss.
87. Kronos Quartet- Summer Overture (June 2001): This song is on the Requiem for a Dream Soundtrack- my favorite movie of all time. So naturally, one of the songs from the soundtrack is gonna be on my Top 100. The song is perfect for the movie. The violins in this song are unbelievable; the violin melody is what got this song on the list.
86. Junior Jack- My Feelings (Summer 2001): I guess the whole "Dancing Bush" thing on the net makes this song sound a little gay, but I heard it before that (not to brag), I just didn't know what the title of the song was. So I'm glad I saw that little internet video, or else this song would not have made my countdown. I don't really know how to describe house songs all that well- besides the fact that I am a sucker for them. I love house music, and it should get more airtime on commercial radio. My only house fix is on Friday night (Sat morning) from 1:00 am to 6:00 am. And then they have some on college radio, but the shit they play on there is not as good. A little bit of a tangent there, I suppose, but this song is nice.
85. Blockhead- Insomniac Olympics (April 27, 2004): Yeah, so maybe I've only known this song for about a year (really not even- it was late April), but the moment I heard this song, I knew this would be a Top 100. And with time, this song is sure to rise, maybe even into the Top 50. I'm very lucky to have encountered this song- because this song was on a college radio station at like 1:30 in the morning, and I just happened to wake up. I was like, "Fuck, this song is beautiful (it's an instrumental- Blockhead is much like RJD2)". So I crawled out of bed, called up the radio station, and got the song. Actually had to buy the CD because I couldn't find it on the net (very good CD as well). It actually has a music video, which is ok, but it plays the abridged version of the song, which isn't nearly as good because the transitions are not seamless at all.
84. Armand Van Helden- You Don't Know Me (September 2000): This song will always have a spot on my countdown only because this song really turned me on to house music. I had heard some house songs before, but this one opened Pandora's Box. Oh man, this is one of those "turning point" songs, as far as listening to music goes.
83. DMX- Ain't No Sunshine (Spring 2001): At one point, this song was as high as 38th on my list, but I realized I had overrated it a bit, quite a bit. Nevertheless, this song is sick. It's got a very nice melancholy melody, nice and slow, and I like the way DMX drawls over the beat. I'm not the biggest fan of DMX, but this is, in my view, his 2nd-best song.
82. Public Enemy- Can't Truss It (Spring 2001): Yeah, I know this song is older than 4, but I was much too young when this song first came out. This song has great energy, very nice beat, and Chuck D spits more than hot fire on this track; he is just flowin' on this one. Great song. Bass in your face.
81. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg- Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin') (2000): This song goes down in my book as the best diss song of all time. The two have great chemistry on this track, dissing this living shit out of Eazy E, 2 Live Crew, and others. Eazy E had a very nice comeback (Real Mutherfuckin' Gs), but this song is just on point. The way they flow to the beat gives me an eargasm.
So yeah, somebody repped me for this list, telling me they'd like to see more electronica. Well, there was some electronica in this 10, and trust me, there's more to come.
