Yeah. Saw that today. Absolutely horrible.
The shield is too small. The rest of his chest and torso is incredibly bare. I dislike the shield being on his belt, as well. It's a bit too much, especially if he has the gold shield on the back of the cape. And Brandon Routh looks NOTHING like Clark Kent/Superman/anything related to Superman or comic books in the least. He looks so shitty. He's not that big as well. He's kind of puny.
Well, I've said it before in the "Superman, great cast, expensive" topic, and I'll say it again, Bryan Singer is a fucking idiot.
He's got a horrible costume, bad cast(awful choices), horrid idea for a story, and once again, using one of the most over-used villains in history, Lex Luthor. Not to mention he's using John Williams score and Marlon Brando footage for Jor-El. Jesus, Singer, why don't you just steal something else from Richard Donner you self-important dickhead?
I'll be happy to sit back and laugh as everyone defends this piece of shit.

I wanted to be as optimistic as I could about this movie, since I'm a huge Superman nut. But come on! For crying out loud, Dean Cain looked more masculine as Superman than that garbage.

I would have thought that they would have updated the Superman costume in some way, so it looks less gay, but maybe not.

Updating the Superman costume would make it look even worse. Did you ever see all that shit they tried doing in the 90's where Superman wore all black, or when they turned him completely blue? The only decent "revamped" look that didn't look like utter shit was when Stan Lee did a one-shot comic, but even then it hardly looked anything like him.
Hell, at this point I'm just glad Singer didn't change the outfit to another fucking leather jumpsuit.

But you gotta admit that the superman costume looks pretty silly no matter who wears it, and I'm not just talking about the updated costume. It's the same thing with the Phantom, he looks pretty good in comics, but stupid in flesh.

I didn't mean a complete revamp, I mean making minor changes that make it look a lot better in a real life setting. At the moment it just looks retarded.
But im guessing that the Superman costume will always look gay regardless of any changes made to it.

I blame Singer. I blame that douche for this piece of shit costume. He approved this awful crap, and it's his blame. And what's with the ripping on Superman's costume? It looks gay no matter what changes you make? He's lived with this iconic costume for over 60 years, why now the sudden dislike for it? I find that common among people now, finding costumes "silly".
And no, you can't judge a movie based on the costume. But the fact is, Bryan Singer is directing this. That I can judge something on. And on top of that, he finds costumes "silly", and will probably have Routh out of the costume as much as possible. He's a fucking idiot, who's had his ego blown up like a fucking baloon. I never had hopes for Superman Returns to begin with, but the more and more that comes out about it, the more and more I'm saying, "I'll stick with Smallville".
Waits for people to rip on Smallville.

Nah, Smallville is the goods. They should have got Tom Welling to play Clark in the movie.

I love Smallville, but I can't see Tom Welling making the transition from the teenage-angst Dawson's Creek-esque version of Clark Kent to the clean-cut old school classic Superman. But maybe I'm just being too much of a comic geek for my own good here.

Well for a large number of people, they wont acept anyone else as Superman, because to them it will always be Christopher Reeves. I'm one of them, but at least I can accept Welling as the younger Clark.

I know this is going to sound really gay but....
I don't like the material it's made of. The fibres of it look stupid.
I wouldn't have a problem accepting someone other than Reeves as Superman but... the first thing you have to have is the costume. Personally I don't think ANY changes should be made to the costume.

You know, the sad fact is, Warner Bros. are just too fucking stupid to realize that if you basically transfer everyone over that you need from Smallville(Welling, Rosenbaum, Durance, maybe Annette O' Toole and John Schneider), you have a built-in audience. You've got a huge amount of viewer potential. You've got the comic book fans(like myself), who are really enjoying how Al Gough & Miles Millar are putting little twists on things. But, maybe even more important, you've got the casual audience, who know Smallville is based on the Superman comics, but haven't read them, they just like the show.
Welling is great, he seems born to play this role. It's like it was made for him(with the exception of Chris Reeve, R.I.P.). Look at this...

These were to two best looking manips I found on Google. Now doesn't Welling look a helluva lot more like Superman than Routh? As far as I'm concerned, Welling is the only guy out there right now that can pull the role off.
Although, Superman Returns has more problems than just a shitty costume and Superman choice.

Superman is NOT A FUCKING KID. He's not supposed to be a cute 20 year old guy - he's supposed to be a MAN.
Tom Welling and Brandon Routh do not look like men - they look like models out of the recent edition of CosmoGIRL. Superman should look like a mature adult, not a cast member off The OC.

In my opinion they should have waited until Smallville was over and then made a movie based on that. With all the actorsand everything.
It'd be interesting cause it'd be a different Superman story then the comics. (Since Smallville is radically different from his past in the comics).

Tom Welling is 26 years old(or 25, not sure), he's made to look young on the show. He's made to look like an 18 year old. Believe me, when Tom's not doing Smallville, he looks much older. He can do it.

Well, not really. Still need to take the shield off of the belt, raise the boots, and get rid of the hip-huggers. Also, you can polish this turd all you want in photoshop, but it still doesn't change the fact that Routh is awful for Superman. Terrible.

Maybe he's going for a retro look. Superman's original design had the S shield very small too.
And why in the world are you loving the movie going to disaster? I'd love it if it DIDN'T go to disaster. I'd hate it if it did.
Nevertheless.... I'll still probably be one of the first in line to see this movie. After that I can criticize all I want.

Why? Because I'm sick and tired of people shoving Bryan Singer's cock down their mouth and praising him when he makes dull movies like X-Men and X2. They are both dull and boring, if you ask me. They have their moments, but it's real hit and miss for me.
I want it to fail so bad because then people will realize how shitty and overrated Bryan Singer is. I could go all night about Peter Jackson and Quenton Tarantino's balls being licked dry by critics, but I won't.
The pure fact is, yes, I'll see Superman Returns. But I have zero expectations for it. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe it isn't. But when it sucks ass, I'll be laughing.

Wow, they hid nipple suits? I'm sorry, I must have been too busy focusing on the TERRIBLE ACTING AND STORY. But obviously the fact that their costumes had nipples on them was far more detrimental to the overall quality of the movie.
I agree with Ninti on this one, I think you'll find the success of the movie will be more heavily weighted on the overall product, as opposed to the fact that his cape his a dullish red.

Yes. It is a different take, but there's no need to make it that small. Making it that small to me seems like your changing it just to change something. It's a symbol, it's supposed to mean something. Making it so small diminishes the point of him having the shield at all.
I don't have anything personal against Brandon Routh. He may be a good actor, he may not. But the cold, hard fact is he doesn't look like Superman.
Darker colors doesn't work for Superman. It may work for Batman, but not for Superman. He's supposed to have bright colors so people can trust him. If he has dark colors, it makes him seem forboding, which he is not.
The shield on the belt is awful. It's redundant. And I will agree that Batman does have way too many bats hanging around. Especially in the books now.
No, the costume designer doesn't make the film. But a director who would approve a shitty costume like this is making the film.
Overall, I am hating Superman Returns more and more.

It is dull. Very dull, in fact. It has it's moments. Nightcrawler is done well(but Alan Cummings rocks anyway), and the raid on the school is awesome. But overall, X2(and the first as well) is just very boring. It may be that I've never been the biggest X-Men fan in the first place.
And I'm not hating this movie because the costume doesn't give me a hard on(whatever that's supposed to mean :wtf: ), I'm hating it because of the awful direction it's taking. The whole idea is flawed and ridiculous. The movie has nothing original about it. I know it's using Superman II continuity, but that's just stupid.
So, then you're just ripping other people off, right Bryan? Instead of doing something original and fresh, you'll just take the easy way out? Figures from a hack like you.

One other thing. This isn't related to Superman or comics at all, but I'm not making an entirely new topic about it. I mentioned Peter Jackson earlier, whom I also despise.
It just kills me that people can remake a movie, and get bitched at for tampering with the original film, yet Peter Jackson can remake King Kong and tha'ts fine. If we're not careful, we'll blow Jackson's ego up bigger than Tarantino and Kevin Smith's combined(if possible). And this is all because people can't take their lips off of Jackson's ass to realize that Lord Of The Rings is overrated.
