Simpsons is a superior show
I have to go with Family Guy. I grew up on the Simpsons, no doubt about it. I have a lot of old episodes on tape. Hell, I didn't like Family Guy during it's first run. I was one of the people who said "It's a Simpsons rip off, I'll never watch that shit!" I watched it a FEW times during it's first run, but it didn't grow on me, mainly because I only saw maybe two or three original airings.
But then, just out of pure curiosity, I watched it on Cartoon Network and fell in love. I now own all three seasons on DVD and plan on getting the next seasons when they come out.
Family Guy just has that 'something'. I get many more laughs out of it than I EVER did with The Simpsons. There will always be a special place in my heart for The Simpsons, but Family Guy will always rank up at the top two of my favorite cartoon series list (the other being South Park), unless something else comes along, and I don't see that happening.

Family Guy :y:
I've watched Simpsons since '91, and haven't really followed the new episodes since 2001 or 2002. I find that even when I see some of the old Simpsons episodes, when the show was at it's best, I still enjoy Family Guy more.
That's not to say that Simpsons sucks or anything, I like The Simpsons, it's just that I like Family Guy even more.

Simpsons > Every other cartoon ever > Family Guy
Okay, that's a big exaggeration, but that's how wide the gulf is between the greatness of The Simpsons and the occasional rofl humor of Family Guy, imo. Family Guy has some pretty funny moments, but there has never been anything on TV that compares to The Simpsons. Nothing.
I can't believe this question even needs to be asked.
It's like saying, "Which is better: Seinfeld or Rodney?"

The Simpsons was a great show. Then Matt Goening left to work on Futurama. At that point the show lost its soul and has sucked ever since.
Family Guy is the better of the 2 now, but it can't hold the original Simpsons' jock.

I went with Simpsons. I haven't seen too much of Family Guy to know how good it is. It sucks that here in Mass they only play Simpsons once a day at 7:30. Unless they play it late at night then I don't know. If I can give one phrase to explain the Simpsons it would be PEANUT BUTTER JELLY WITH A BASEBALL BAT!

Out of the Simpsons and Family guy. Family Guy
Futurama is better then both of them though.
I love both shows, but Simpsons is the better one.
Family Guy has the potential to be greater with more seasons provided the FCC and FOX don't drop it AGAIN.

As much as I love the Simpsons, I am always laughing my ass off during Family Guy. The Simpons always made me chuckle throughout, but I'm actually crying laughing at some points in Family Guy. Plus, Seth has a lot of little knock off things from the 80's, which is when I grew up.
However, I think Southpark owns them both.

The Simpsons. Hands down. This shouldn't be a question, loopydate is right.
Yes, Family Guy is hilarious. But the simple truth of the matter is that without the Simpsons, Family Guy never would have even existed. The Simpsons opened the doorway to prime time cartoons, and although it suffered somewhat of a downturn from late season 11 to season 14 when Groening put all his effort into Futurama and Mike Scully took Executive Producing rights of the show and tried to (for whatever reason) emulate Family Guy humour by making the show more random and spontaneous - increasing Homer's stupidity, for example - it was still a right sight better than most of the shit on TV these days. Still, that's not the formula that worked for the Simpsons in the past, and it sure as hell didn't work in those years.
However, with the departure of Scully, The Simpsons has notably improved. The newer episodes of Season 15 onwards have been of season 9-10 quality which, while not the standard of The Golden Age (late season 4-season 8), is still a right sight higher quality than most of the shit on TV. The Simpsons have had a consistently excellent run, dropping the ball comparatively minimally when compared to other shows of the genre. Of course Family Guy hasn't dropped the ball yet, they haven't had the chance. As far as I'm concerned, the first 3 seasons of Family Guy don't even hold a candle to Seasons 4-8 of the Simpsons, and until such time as I see a run that lasts 4 1/2 seasons of flawless comedy (There is not a single bad episode in that Simpsons run), my vote will stay with the original and the best.

And since it got a mention in the thread, I also hold Futurama in higher regard than Family Guy. It was hilarious, thought provoking and even powerful when it wanted to be. The characters and animation were wonderful, and the storylines were excellent. If there was ever a show that was cancelled in it's prime, it would be Futurama. :(

The simpsons used to be the better show. After 55 years on the air, they've become stale and boring. Family Guy hasn't been around as long, but comparing current products, it wins.
Still, Futurama owns them both as other have said.

I voted for Family Guy. I felt bad cause I used to love the Simpsons...but Family Guy makes me laugh on a more regular basis.
Futurama was a good show, one that im only beginning recently to appreciate since it comes on before Family Guy at night.
The first few simpsons halloween specials were always my favorite episodes. Even those are terrible now.

I used to watch simpsons everyday. I mean I would not miss it. Then I saw family guy and that all changed. I tried to watch a simpsons episode recently and it was almost unbearable. It pales in comparison to family guy. The only reson people may choose simpsons is because it's been on so long, and some people who grew up watching it may not want to admit that it's not as good as FG.

No, the better show now is Simpsons, since Family Guy isn't on the air. Not for another few weeks.
If you're counting the reruns as being current, then you gotta count the Golden Age "Simpsons" that run in syndication, too.

Ok, I must go with Simpsons as a whole. I've always been a fan of the series, though now the new episodes are so unbearable, ugh! The family have become a shell of their former selves. But without the Simpsons, there is no Family Guy or any cartoon that followed... even though there is no real bad episode of Futurama as it is complete greatness... damn, is that show great!
But yeah, Family Guy is the tops at the moment, I mean, me and my buds all quote it religiously and I really dig all the pop culture references.

But that's the thing with Family Guy: It is funny in bursts. A few 'lols' here, a 'ROFL' there, it's all grouse. But with the Simpsons... you watch any episode from late season 4-season 8, and you don't stop laughing for almost the entire episode.

I don't believe that. The Simpsons comedy just appeals to different people more than Family Guy's type.
Personally I think they're both great, however I can remember far more hilarious Simpsons moments than Family Guy. Even the last few seasons that everyone says were so bad, I enjoyed those as well. But the way I see it is this Family Guy gives me a couple good laughs every night on Adult Swim, but it has never given me a quote that has had me laughing for 5-10 minutes afterward like one of the recent Simpsons episodes has.

I don't know why but it had me laughing for the rest of the episode and I'm laughing sitting here thinking about it right now.

Wow. Tough call.
I grew up on The Simpsons, so it is my humour. But when Family Guy came along, it blew me away. The classic seasons ( 3-8 IMHO ) of The Simpsons blow any other TV away. No question.
BUT, my vote will have to go to Family Guy. It constantly makes me laugh, has never had what I consider to be a "dud" episode, is always fresh and contriversial without going too far. Plus, I know Seth McFarlane will call it a day when it gets un-funny.
My vote would have gone to The Simpsons if they had called it quits after Seasons 10/11, but they kept going, and are just pissing on their great legacy now, which is a real shame.
Oh, and Futurama should be on this poll. That would get my vote.

Simpsons by far. Sure Family Guy has the funny, but it has no substance to it at all. Sadly, that's how Simpsons is too nowadays. Everything is just a running joke, there's no connection with any of the characters at all. That's why Simpsons was so awesome. Even with the great humor, you actually cared about the characters on the show.
I agree that Futurama > both though <3

I'm going with Family Guy. Not much else to say that everyone else hasn't already said. The Simpsons is one of the greatest shows of all time. I can't imagine a show being as funny, joke by joke as Family Guy though. Granted, The classic Simpsons episodes had the substance that Family Guy doesn't really have but if I just want to laugh, I go with Family Guy.
The fact that people are trying to put Futurama above either of these shows makes no sense at all though. I remember watching Futurama when it first started and being appauled by it's terribleness (The first few episodes) to the point that I avoided it like the plague until about a year ago. I started watching reruns and decided it was actually pretty funny but comparing it to either of these two is insane. It's right there with King of the Hill, The Critic, etc. Good show... but there's nothing about it that screams classic.
