Overated?
Underrated?

You know these guys had some monster hits and put on some awesome performances. I don't frequent the music forum much, as I find 99% of todays music = is shit, but I don't recall seeing any Queen talk.

Let us talk about Queen.

I used to be a huge fan of Queen when I was a young lad, early teens.

Haven't really listened to them so often lately. My girlfriend bought me the Greatest Hits set, but some bastard stole it about a week afterwards, and I weeped bitter tears.

At this point, with Queen, I just enjoy their fantastic songs and I don't really give a fuck about how good their albums or performances were. As bands go, they're as iconic and their songs are as universal as any apart from the Beatles, probably. A Queen song can come on in a pub and everyone will know the words, in a lot of the parts of the Western world.

You should also check out my thread about Ray Lamontagne. He is new, and he is not shit.

Underrated.

However, Brian's doing his best to make them overrated.

With the number of hits they have provided with a lasting influence, it's a shocker they tend to get ranked so low...If they're ranked at all...

I find, when talking about great music/bands, influential bands/music, Queen is rarely mentioned. Once they are, everyone sort of pipes up "oh yeah!"

Weird.

I dont think they are either. They are definately known as legends, but I dont think they should be classified as a rock band.

They were a great band, yet nobody seems to pay any attention to them. Underrated.

Personally I don't think they are either, but if I had to choose they are a little more underrated. This is ironic you would make this thread, because last week I started listening to them again and I hadn't for like two years. But I think that everybody respects them a lot, and they were a great band, but I think they pretty much get the credit they deserve.

Underrated. Superb band with quite a few memorable songs/lyrics.

I think it's because they don't really fit into anything. Queen seem to be their own thing seperate from anything else.

It's because generally people only seem to have their Greatest Hits collection and not their albums. That's been my experience. With other legendary groups, people point to the legendary albums, but you don't really see that too often with Queen.

Did they really have any stand out albums? I thought most of their hits were spread out.

Queen II

A Night at the Opera

Sheer Heart Attack

A Day at the Races

Innuendo

--Each of these had several hits on them, except Queen II, which only really had the one (Seven Seas of Rhye). It was a concept album though.

Actually, even their lesser 80s records tended to have a lot of hits. The Game, Widely regarded as their worst, had Play the Game, Another One Bites the Dust, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and Save Me

Hot Space, their "funk" experiment, had Under Pressure, Body Language...

The Miracle HAd The Miracle, I Want it All, Invisible Man, Breakthru, and Scandal.

Their Self Titled was pretty big with a lot of people too.

Thanx for the info kk. Im gonna pose this as a serious question. Do you think the way Freddy Mercury died might have had reprocussions down the road?

Yeah, but I think Brian May's created more Repercussions by living.

He's spent the last decade attacking critics, making boy band covers of Queen songs, living in the past via a musical...Joining up with Robbie Williams, Paul Rodgers, alienating his bandmates...

He's doing a lot of damage to Queen. Even GH3 was nothing but a self serving compilation of leftovers.

However, dying of AIDS damaged things, siply because even today, there are still people who view AIDS as a "Queer Disease." Which triggers an OMGWTF GAYS R BAD BBQ SAUCE reaction.

Still, Mister May is dead set on making himself out to look like the big driving force behind Queen (And what better way to prove it than by letting people cover Freddie songs and doing a camp musical..)

I was thinking more along the lines that people dont want to remember the fact that he had died from AIDS, so it would be easier to forget. I didnt know that there was such negativity around Brian May.

Trust me. There's plenty more. He's verbally abused critics, fans, even his fellow bandmates. He's even gone so far as to try and prey on Freddie Mercury, someone who supposedly was his "dear friend."

Of course, most of it's that whole "Ric Flair--GET OFF MY LAWN! WOOOOO!" corchety old man shit that's been going on forever, but Rock'n'Roll ain't about faces and heels.

Not one of my favorite classic bands, but I say when people look back and rank all the bands back then, Queen usually gets the shaft at times. So I'd say they are underated.

Anyone for some Styxx.

"Born to be Kings"(Highlander Tv series song) is my favourite
"Princes of the Universe."

Which was also the song from the intro to the first movie.

However, the actual Highlander theme was "Who Want to Live Forever."

This has been another USELESS FACT.

Awesome band. I watched a special on them not too long ago. Learned a lot about them, and gained some new found respect for them. They tend to be overlooked, but I wouldn't say underrated. If that statement is possible.
