HBK didn't want to job his Title to Bret Hart at Mania. So he said he was "injured" to Vince aka "lost his smile" to the fans. He then came back like a little while later at Summerslam and everything was fine again with him. :nono:
Bret had an idea where HBK would job at Mania when Bret got him in a killer submission and snapped his ankle. Bret wouldn't shake his hand or show any kind of remorse to him. Fans would booo. Shawn would come back and take the Title. Then they would do a tag thing. HBK said it was cool. Then he did the interview about "losing his smile."

HBK almost didn't job to Austin at Wrestlemania until The Undertaker punked him out.....
Check this story out.
From http://www.armpitwrestling.com
Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels, 1998
Austin, McMahon, Undertaker and Michaels were in a meeting with other officials planning the WWE's strategy going forward.
Apparently, leading up to WMXIV, the idea was for HBK to drop the strap to Austin, which HBK initially rejected.
At this point Undertaker began to tape his fists methodically. The Deadman told HBK that it was advisable that he, HBK, change his mind about doing the job by the time that he, Undertaker, finished taping his fists or he will MAKE HBK change his mind the hard way.

I have a video of this somewhere.
Shawn Michaels may have been the best in-ring performer in the world in his prime. But man was he a pain in the ass.
As has been said, HBK claimed the knee injury and did the promo vacating the belt to get out of dropping the title back to Bret Hart at Mania. He claimed the knee injury was a career ender, and when he went to get it looked at by a doctor, he was told that the injury was SO severe, that it didn't even require surgery to heal.

In fact, Shawn was back a bit earlier than that. He won the Tag Title alongside Stone Cold Steve Austin in late May and went on to wrestle Steve at the 1997 King of the Ring.
Shawn then did something to breech his WWF contract (I can't think at the moment whether that was just missing an appearance or what.), only to return a couple of weeks later.
I believe there was speculation that Shawn wanted to get out of his WWF contract so that he could join his friends Scott Hall and Kevin Nash in WCW.

Yep there was that. I'm not sure if that tied in with Bret beating him backstage in Hartford though. Happened in June. They both got pulled from that raw and sent home, but HBK said he wouldnt be coming back.

I believe it did indeed stem from that incident.

Yeah, pretty sure of it. The fact they had to strip the tag titles soon after and place it on Dude Love along with Austin nails it. Why else would they do that if not due to more negotiating and squabbles with HBK.

Funnily enough, Shawn was back before the Tag Team Title Match, and there was even speculation (albeit maybe purely markish) that Shawn would be Steve's chosen partner.

Mania was in March. Shawn came back after, not before that. He did announcing at Mania 13.
