According to various sources within WWE, the release of Luther Reigns from the company yesterday had to do with Reigns actually requesting it. Reigns felt he wasn't being used to his full potential as he was getting up in age and would have a shorter timeframe to perform in the ring. From what is understood at this time, Reigns voiced his concerns to those in WWE management before WrestleMania 21 instead of opting to voice his opinions behind their backs.
It should be noted that there is no heat regarding Reigns' decision to leave as he reportedly wanted to spend more time with his real estate investments he had in Arizona, which is where he lives. He didn't rule out the possiblity of returning to the company down the line, but the general opinion among many in WWE was that he used his time in the business to set himself up financially to work on real estate projects. This is a very common thing other talent in the business do, including Dawn Marie among others.
Reigns leaving the recent European tour last month had nothing to do with his release for those wondering. He was simply sent home due to illness.
