Though not confirmed, a very real looking picture of the PS3 has popped up today. The specs are as follows
--------------------------------------------------
The PS3 will ship in March, 2006 in Japan (earlier than what a lot of people thought before) and there will be 2 versions of PS3, but only the first version will be shipped next March, (at a price range of $299-399) with a read only Blue-Ray, and as mentioned a 120 GB hard disk capacity. The second version of PS3 will ship some months later, ($399-599) with a writer Blue-Ray, a 400 GB hard disk, for the main purpose of recording TV digital programs. Specs and additional info:
* 1 CELL running at 4 GHZ, providing 256 GFLOPS power (1 PPE, L1 cache 32 KB, L2 cache 512 KB, and 8 SPE each one having 256 KB).
* There is 2 I/O (input/output) on CELL, to communicate with other parts of the console, the first I/O of the CELL has the main purpose to communicate with the unified shared (between the CELL and the GPU) XDR Ram memory (from RAMBUS) at a 50 GB/s bandwidth (4 * 64 MB = 256 MB of memory)
* The second I/O is called FlexIO (flexible input/output) and this allow the CELL to communicate with the next generation NVIDIA GPU at a 76.8 GB/s bandwidth (this GPU with 190 million transistors will run at a 600 MHZ, with a 32 rendering pipelines, associated with 16 MB of Toshiba Embedded DRAM of 256 GB/s bandwidth). The CELL will help the GPU in creating advanced physics for particle effects.
* Retro compatibility with PS1 (emulated by the CELL) and PS2 (emulated by the CELL)
* A Hard Disk of 160 GB, Ethernet port (no modem this time), wireless, USB2 port, and a flash stick memory duo-pro support.
* The controllers will not so much differ from those of PS2, with the main difference that they will be WIRELESS, and with better analog buttons and more varied vibration effects.
* If the first CELL IBM produced prototypes are using 90 nanometer technology, the first SDKs containing the CELL that developers will receive after 2 months will be produced with this technology, but the CELLs that will be used on PS3 (and later SDKs) will be produced with the 65 nanometer technology, allowing sony to decrease the costs of PS3, and to tackle the problems of HEAT.
Release dates of the PS3 in USA and Europe haven’t been determined yet by $ony, but it's believed that the PS3 will ship between July and October 2006 in USA and in late 2006 in Europe.

LOS ANGELES--Today saw the second of the big three console makers announce their next-generation platform. At its pre-E3 press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment gave the world its first look at the PlayStation 3, as it now is officially called.
The name was not unexpected, since Sony had been running an extensive teaser-ad campaign prepping the public for the PlayStation 3. The company had laid a blanket of posters around the Los Angeles Convention Center, site of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (aka E3). Bus stalls and billboards around the convention center proclaimed "Prepare for Chang3" in the distinctive PlayStation font with partial shots of the Dual Shock controller's square-circle-triangle-X buttons.
Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3, will use Blu-Ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also support CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. It also confirmed the machine would be backward-compatible all the way to the original PlayStation. It will also have slots for Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, and a compact flash memory slot. It will also sport a slot for detachable 2.5 inch HDD somewhat similar the Xbox 360's.
Out of the box, the PS3 will have the capability to support seven Bluetooth controllers. It will also have six USB slots for peripherals--four up front and two in the back.
Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz and feature 2.18 teraflops of performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, and have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz.
Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. It also has over 300 million transistors lager than any processor available commercially today. It was manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 ultras, which would cost rough $1000 if bought today.
The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio and video. Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi introduced it as a "Super computer for computer entertainment."

To show off the PlayStation 3's graphical brawn, Sony showed several game demos, including an Unreal 3 tech demo of what appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007. In what must come as a relief to developers, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney was on hand to vouch for the PS3, saying it was "easy to program for" and that Epic had received its first PS3 hardware two months ago. He proved the tech demo was real time by showing it again and manipulating the camera and zooming in.
However Sweeney's words were only the beginning. Later, Sony trotted out a whole host of publishers who are backing the PlayStation 3--and in the process confirmed several games for the console. Hideo Kojima introduced Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4, Capcom showed off Devil May Cry 4, Namco unveiled Tekken 6, Polyphony Digital trotted out Gran Turismo 5, SCEE showed off a brutal demo of the next Killzone.

E3 2005: EA Sports Fight Night
All running in real-time on PS3.
by Ivan Sulic (http://ps3.ign.com/email.html)
May 16, 2005 - The first thing my editor-in-chief Jeremy Dunham said when Electronic Arts' super producer Kudo showed Fight Night Round 3 on PS3 was, "It looks fugging awesome." Of course, he didn't actually say fugging, but you get the idea.
The game, according to our boys, looks absolutely amazing. "Totally real," in fact.
Dunham described a couple of fighters going at it, but didn't elaborate on who they were. He did describe facial rendering technology that allowed for physics on skin and bones that could actually break. More details to follow.

They said they were showing a Spiderman 3 demo, that will ship with the PS3, and that people thought it was from Spiderman 2 it looked so real. When in fact it was the model they use in the movies. The PS3 can handle the model from them and it may be the main character for the next game.
Pretty sweet I must say.

I like the new controller, and hate the old ones. Hopefully, this one is a lot stronger. My problem with the old ones is that they feel too small, and feel really flimsy. It's why I like the type-s controller on the x-box.. It feels sturdy, and it's just the right size.
With all the bluetooth and USB connectivity, I wonder if you'll be able to use the Xbox 360 controllers on the PS3 and vice versa. Could be pretty nice.

The new console itself looks great, but tbh I like the existing controller. I'm not saying they shouldn't develop new ones, but I think it'd be sweet if there were the option to use either/or. I mean, have the new IR/Bluetooth controllers, sure, but also put some jacks on the front so people who have upgraded from PS2 can use their old controllers if they prefer.

Even Nintendo are throwing in backwards compatibility with the Revolution, for Microsoft to completely ignore it would be stupid.
Whats even more stupid is that if they decided not to have backwards compatibility despite the fact that the Xbox 360 can more than handle any Xbox game on it.

N64... Gamecube... :?: Revolution is going to have a FREE online service similar to XBox Live, also:
Nintendo also revealed that using Revolution's new Wi-Fi connection, gamers would be able to go online to a free gamer-matching service. Interestingly, in a move similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service, Revolution users will be able to download classic and new Nintendo games over the Internet. Nintendo cited such examples as Donkey Kong and Super Mario Sunshine, which suggests that Revolutionaries could have access to games for all the publisher's previous consoles.
If you can play Sunshine over it, you can bet n64 games will be on it
Also, heres official nintendo shots of Revolution:

Definitely shaping up to make for a difficult decision. I'm interested to see how the price of each system plays out, as that will largely play a role in my decision, personally. I have all three systems right now, I used to be big on my PS2 but have since favored my XBox. I don't know which one I would want to go with this time around.

May 17, 2005 - According a an article published in the May 17th edition of Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, the PlayStation 3 could be one of the most expensive mass-market videogame consoles ever created. Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars.
Before you all cry, one has to consider that it'll be able to play PS1 and PS2 games, CDs, DVDs, as well as the upcoming Blue-Ray discs. For that kind of versatility, $465 is a pretty decent price. I still think people will still eat the system up like candy.
Well, Nintendo has gone on record in saying that it'll be a pay service (to download NES, SNES, and N64 games), but yeah. You will be able to play NES, SNES, N64, as well as Gamecube games on the Revolution. That makes me believe that there'll be some kind of storage device to hold all these games. O_o

$465 is definitely steep. I figure with another controller and a game probably run me about $550. Going to start saving mad early, little bit every week. Gonna be great.
