It's Official: Brett Ratner to Direct "X-Men 3"
Scott Weinberg writes: "Variety confirms what the gossip mill has been churning: Brett Ratner (director of both "Rush Hour" movies, as well as "Money Talks," "The Family Man," "After the Sunset," and "Red Dragon") has signed on to replace Matthew Vaughn as director of the third "X-Men" movie.
Whether or not the hardcore comic-book community will embrace this decision remains to be seen, but the quick hiring of Mr. Ratner means that "X-Men 3" is still on course to make its May 2006 release date. The director comes into a production that includes veterans Hugh Jackman & Patrick Stewart, newcomers Kelsey Grammer & Vinnie Jones, and an allegedly fantastic screenplay by Simon Kinberg & Zak Penn.
To his credit, Ratner is a self-admitted comics fan and was among the directors considered to helm the original "X-Men" movie. On the other hand, very little in Mr. Ratner's filmography indicates that he has the knack for this sort of ultra-flashy, high-end spectacle. Keep your fingers crossed, X-Fans!"

I'm not sure if this is much of an improvement, but some of his movies are good.

At least he has more directing experience that Vaughn did.

I agree with The Destroyer, I like the fact that he is a fanboy too.

You know, I'm glad X-Men is getting a new director. It can inject some much needed improvement to thesee films. Maybe now with Bryan "I'm Such A Hack" Singer out of the picture, we can get Magneto out of these fucking movies. You know Singer would have put Magneto in the third. Maybe now with a new director, the whole damn movie won't be about Wolverine.

Seriously I would have liked Singer to continue, he knows his stuff. He knows the universe, the reason for the main role of Wolverine is because he is the most popular X-Man and that's where the money is.

That doesn't matter. He's an overrated character. Cyclops is a much more interesting character, yet he's pushed aside for overhyped characters like Wolverine and Magneto.
Doesn't really matter to me, though, X-Men has always been my least favorite comic.

See, that's where I get mad :)
I'm a massive X-Men fan. Cyclops bores me with his goody goody attitude and he is quite a boring character compared to the past of Wolvering. The 'Origin' graphic novel was amazing. I know Cyclops past is interesting and even his future (Nathan Summers) but he bores me.
With the inclusion of Juggernaut I see more emphasis on Charles.

You know, that's one thing I'm looking forward to, Juggernaut. He could be awesome if done right.
But my problem with X-Men is that people are so in love with it, and I can't understand why. Yeah, yeah, Stan, I get that it's symbolism for people who are oppressed(afircan-americans, chinese, homosexuals), but that gets old fast.

The fuck you say!?
How are the two most important characters in X-Men overhyped in the first place? And in the second place...HOW THE HELL CAN YOU HAVE X-MEN WITHOUT MAGNETO AND WOLVERINE!?

Wolverine is a fanboy's wet dream. All the fanboys love him. Can't see why. He's somewhat dull in my opinion.
Magneto's good in the comics, but his movie portrayal is lacking. He's been in two films, that's enough. He shouldn't have even been in X2.

I like the fact that they've made Magneto a staple in the movies. Same as Mystique. It portrays a type of continuity that I appreciate.

But it's boring, not to mention lazy, to just keep re-using him. That's what happened with Superman. Lex Luthor is used way too much in those movies,(of course, after Superman II, who really cares?) and he's in Superman Returns. Although, I guess I shouldn't be surprised by that dumbass Singer.

It seems as if I never see you post unless it is to bash Brian Singer. Or other comic book movies.

I do bash Singer a lot, don't I? But that's because he's a hack, and someone who has had his ego blown up to a tremendous size, when in my opinion, his films are not all that great.

See I disagree. It's not lazy, in fact it's bold. It develops the character more and more. In fact's it's easy to just throw in another villian each movie. Like Batman. Shitty. Part of the problem is you've got to make the next villian more evil/outrageous than the last, al the while not forgetting to develop the "good guy" a little more. Doing this leaves little room to give any real depth to your "bad guy". I appaul the direction X-Men have gone with Magneto.

Yup Cyke is boring, he's captain cardboard, that's the way he's designed.

I concur with the above statements.
Also think of it from the money point of view. Wolverine is who everybody seems to know and like best, so they made him the main character.
Magneto is the big villain who everybody has heard of. Other X-Men villains... the general public will just go "who the hell?". Besides, it's not as if he was the main bad guy, in full spotlight in the second movie.
Plus they get to use Ian McKellan, who no doubt draws people.

I thought they were gonna do the whole Phoenix thingy in this movie. I dunno it seems like after how X2 ended. Also is Gambit in this one? If not then poo

I don't think Gambit is in this, at the moment the two new X-Men in this film will be Kittie Pride (Shadowcat) and Beast.

Read an early script review (bear in mind this is AICN, and they can be terribly wrong sometimes)...anyway apparently this is the script as it was about a month ago right before Vaughn left. Big fucking SPOILERS (probably) so I'm gonna black 'em out.
<font color="#000000">-Phoenix kicks off.
-Gambit is in, as is Angel and Beast as we know already.
-Juggernaut is a bodyguard type for Magneto, barely has anything to do.
-Cyclops = DEAD
-Xavier = DEAD (and Jesus Christ someone's gonna throw a shitfit over that one)
-Mystique = De-mutanted (basically the major 'threat' is a serum that reverses mutation)
-Another mutant gets de-mutanted, probably Rogue (there's a Rogue/Iceman/Kitty Pryde love triangle thing going on)</font>
So yeah, sounds like it might be a trainwreck of epic proportions.

Well, I'm skipping M3's spoiler, but according to imdb.com, Famke Janssen is playing Jean Grey/Phoeneix. Take that for what you will. Could be something, could be nothing.

I don't think Gambit will be a major character in the movie. His role - the mysterious "badass" loner - is interchangeable with Wolverine. That's not saying the characters are carbon copies, just that X-men is chiefly about the team rather than individual characters, and having both Gambit and Wolvie would be a bit redundant...kinda like having both Goldberg and Brock Lesnar, but on the same show. You can argue over who's better, but in the end, they're both there to fill the same niche.
Also, I don't like this idea of (spoiler-related information blacked) Kitty in a love triangle with Iceman. As my avatar suggests, I've been a huge (colossal, even) fan of Colossus since I started reading the comic years ago, and his relationship with Kitty was one of my favorite subplots, romantic or otherwise.

So what's the deal with Pyro? Is he just not in this movie at all?
Funky Fly
06-14-2005, 04:37 PM
I'm pretty sure the entire cast isn't confirmed yet. When they were making X2, Alan Cumming had to move from the set to his trailer and back covered with a blanket to keep the character list secret.

Pyro should be developed over this next Xmen and then be a prime time character in the following one. Hopefully they make several more of these films. It has the potential to go on for a very long time all the while remaining a solid epic. I can't see MMM's spoilers all being true. Who knows though.
Danny Electric
06-15-2005, 08:47 AM
I don't know if they will be true too, their's always loads of ideas flying about.
I agree that Pyro should be developed, if he goes out like he did in the comics then it's killing himself or dying to do the right thing.
