This is pretty much a random rant, but i felt it deserved discussion. So let me know if you feel the same way as im going to describe.

It was just the other day that i was thinking of some of the Main Events from the past during the run of the nWo, Original DX, Rock and Austin gaining star power, and it made me think about how much i really cared about the main events at those times.

I remember Starcade, cant remember the year, but the main event was Piper vs Hogan. The whole ppv did such a good job building to that main event as did the previous Nitros and PPVs. Now around this time i was aware of the basic aspects of what goes on the behind the scenes and i knew whom the talented wrestlers were. So i knew that these two were old, past their prime, and were politics, but that main event meant so much to me, i couldnt wait to see it.

Another example would be Bret Hart vs Shawn Michales iron man match. Again such great build up and booking, i could not wait to see these two go at it, even though their popularity was not at its peak and WWF was struggling with its loss to it starts going to WCW.

My point is, I dont nearly care 1/4 as much with current main events as i did back then, and with the talent that WWE has it should not be that way. Booking needs to change drastically to attract viewers, and they dont even have to use the greatest technical wrestlers either. Just to give main events that feel again of your really going to see something special would do so much to boost the business back up.

The last main event build up which I really, realy enjoyed was either Rock against Austin at Wrestlemania 17 or the Foley versus Hunter series from early 2000. Apart from that, I think the writers have gotten lazy and think it's enough for a wrestler to come out, make a challenge, get hit with a chair in a tag match and collide at the PPV a few weeks later.

I think the last time i really got excited about a main event was the inaugural brawl at invasion in 2001 little did i know how sour everything would turn out after that ppv.

Edit - yeh, that was pretty cool as well. Van Dam and Hardy is still the dogs bollocks even now...

You know what was great at times back then about their main event matches? The guys in the main event wouldn't ever touch each other on a tv taping. Take Bret/HBK for instance. These two, even while feuding with others, had their storylines interwined together somehow at many different times..which was something else that was great about the booking and the writing. They never wrestled each other between WM12 and SS'97 on tv..but their was a ton of back and forth bickering among the two. Some sneak attacks on each other now and then as well, but it gave way to anticipation..it made you want to see them wrestle. Hell just seeing them wrestle, even without a title on the line was gonna be gold.
Today, you dont see that. You see Batista and HHH wrestling each other alot on raw, whether through tag matches or what have you..there's no proper build..it just isnt good enough, but then again, I dont think Dave is anywhere near the level of champ or main eventer all these other guys were and are...but you catch my drift.

They think today that just because two guys are opposing each other at a ppv, that these guys can not at all feud with someone else at the same time, or have matches and shit with other opponents..just fucking interwine the storylines or something. Everything is just way too predictable right now.

I have never been too hyped up for the main events of pay per views because my favourites were never the main eventers (with the exception of Bret Hart). I never watched to see Austin, Rock, HHH, Undertaker, Foley, Michaels, Hogan etc... I was more interested in guys like Jericho, Benoit, Hardyz, Flash, Marc Mero, Owen, Hennig, RVD, Waltman.

I never once bought a pay per view because Rock, Austin or HHH were going to be on the card, NEVER. I don't think they are horrible and I can definitely see why people enjoy them but they were never my favourites but I didn't really pay attention to them except make a mental note of who was THE current champ.

Dunno if you remember Wrestlemania 21, but the Batista/Triple H build up was fucking magnificent.

Just because you remember some awesome build ups back then, don't think that there weren't a ton of shitty ones back then as well. It's all hit and miss.

Maybe because the Foley Vs HHH and Rock VS Austin main events which I love and cherish so dearly happened back when i was a mark. I could pretty much predict the entire Batista/HHH storyline and outcome from the moment it began. Dam being a smark.

Speaking of hit and miss in the attitude era, anyone remember Boss Man and Big Show at Armageddon 99? Good spot Thrilla.

When I saw the title of this thread, I was expecting a discussion on matches from the actual 'Golden Age' - 40+ years ago. I guess I expected too much :(
