...Just don't seem to be that good. I mean, you still have those tight ones, but the Mexicool's promo on Smackdown was the biggest piece shit (even though the whole slant-eye thing was kinda funny). But these new dudes can't give a could promo to save their life. Thoughts?

Yeah good point. These days, regardless of who delivers them, promos are just not all that great. Back in the day you could get an adrenaline rush just by listening to your favorite wrestlers giving these intensely aggressive promos but anymore they're just regular "I'm gonna kick your ass at the next PPV" bullshit. It's like their not putting much thought into their promos anymore because they've gotten so damn repetitve. As far as I'm concerned a good promo is one of the things that makes a wrestler great but these days everybody's pretty much the same. There's no one in WWE right now who have phenomenal mic skills. THere also lacking that intensity that made the promos of yesteryear so great.

Yeah I agree there, COE. JBL's pretty good on the stick but for me that "I am a wrestling God" crap ruins it. That's almost as bad as "I am the Game and I am that damn good." Layfield really gets into his promos though so I gotta give him that. His promos are far more believable than some of the other guys on WWE's roster. I think Eddie's got pretty good promo skills too as heel, but as a babyface his promos suck ass IMO.

I think the writers feel that the poor english and heavy accents adds to the angle. Basically, these guys are paying the part of the migrant Mexican farmworker who's angry and can't take it anymore. You would expect them to speak poor English.

Thing is, just as wrestling is now watered down and booked by guys in the back, not doing the wrestling, the promos are now also being much more scripted. They just cant let loose any more like they used to.

I can agree with that. In my view the best promos that were ever done were in ECW where the guys were basically allowed to say whatever they want and take it from there (Cactus JAck and Steve Austin to name a few who cut the best promos when given the opportunity top come up with the promo). I sense that this is a reason why the Rey/Eddie feud is so good. I expect that they have a decent amount of freedom in the storyline.

Repetivenss? You mean like when guys like Stone Cold or The Rock of HBK or Mick Foley or damn near everybody used the same catchphrases over and over? That's why they're called catchphrases. The repetition is part of what lets the fan identify with them. This goes back as far as promos have existed.
And its hard to take your griping serious when you say that no one in the company has great mic skills. Eddie has cut some of the most emotiionally intense promos in wrestling. And Kurt Angle ( didn't you once say his mic skills were 'limited?') doesn't just play 'heel' and 'face' roles. he plays radically different kinds of heel and face; goofy milk n cookies Kurt who is the butt of all the jokes, psycho Kurt, Olympic Hero Kurt, Funny Asshole Kurt, etc...I could go on and on...
But my point is, if you can really look at the entire roster and not see anyone who entertains you in their promo, then maybe you should stop watching wrestling because you're no longer a fan.

Yes obviously catchphrases are what identifies most wrestlers but some catchphrases are better than others. Some shouldn't be said over and over again. For instance, "That's the bottom line 'cause Stone Cold said so" is what Steve Austin said at the end of every promo. No matter what he said during the promo he capped it off with that famous phrase. It's not the same thing every time. Same quote yes but everything else in the promo was different. Same as Taz's "Beat Me If You Can Survive If I let You". But any catchphrase where the wrestler says they are something ("I am a wrestling God" and "I am the Game") is pointless it me. They have already established that they are whatever they say they are so why say it each and every time.
The first few times JBL said "I am a Wrestling God" it wasn't so bad. I actually thought it was pretty cool because nobody had ever used that before. But since he started using that line he's used it every week since and it's gotten old IMO. The topic of catchphrases is debatable in many different aspects.
I agree that Angle and Eddie are pretty good on the mic but they are sure as Hell not GREAT. You say Kurt's had "radically" different variations of heel and face that he portrays and I say bullshit. Kurt Angle is just plain old Kurt Angle. Period. Yes he's an incredible athlete and he's great in the ring but his character is pretty much the same as it has been for years. He's been involved in alot of storylines the past couple of years yeah but nothing spectacular and nothing much different than anything he's done before. If he's such a great character how come he hasn't held a major title in 2 years? Hmm?
As far as me not being a fan because I'm not entertained by anybody's promos well that's more bullshit. I'm not just a fan, professional wrestling is my passion and I'll continue to watch even though WWE is in this slump they're in. I'm a WRESTLING fan not just an ignorant WWE fan who does nothing but bitch about WWE's "superstars". I have the upmost respect for every single wrestler on their roster because I'm know what it's like trying to get over the best you can but that doesn't mean I find them exceptionally entertaining. A true child of wrestling doesn't give up on the sport no matter what dumb shit Vince McMahon throws at us. With the exception of Christian winning the World title I don't think things could get much worse. But that doesn't mean I'm no longer a fan. There's more to the sport of professional wrestling than just the WWE.

See now I'm confused. Wasn't just a little while ago this guy was going on and on about how if Christian got any title he'd stop watching WWE?
Now...the reason Kurt hasn't had a major title in 2 years is because....
HE'S BEEN FRIGGIN INJURED HALF THAT TIME!
And hell's bells boyo, I prefer him without any major hardware. He looks good without a belt and I hope it contiues to stay that way. Though I would like to see him with just one more major title run at the end though. But hey...that's just me.

Nice way to dodge the fact that the pothead was dead on right. In every single interview, public statement, or issue of the observer, whenever upper management (Vince, Linda, Shane, etc) has talked about Kurt Angle they've basically said that the onyl reason Angle wasn't being used as the centerpiece of the company was that his neck injuries meant that there was a lot of uncertainty about his availability on a month to month basis.
You're a stubborn ass. How can you honestly look at the promos that Angle did at the beginning of his career with the three I's and the cheap shots at the audience, and then look at the character he played during the Invasion where he would wear that stupid little cowboy hat and act all goofy and let Austin ridicule him, and then see how's he performed after his last heel turn where he was completely intense and eventually became a perverted freak for the last few months and say "Oh, well its just Kurt being Kurt!"
Well, then, that was Austin being Austin or Rocky being Rocky or Mick being Mick...none of their in-ring personas were that different from their actual personalities.
Wrestling might be your passion, but you'll be a total failure if someone ever does decide to let you book or promote. Because you have no clue as to what the audience actually wants.
I guess that makes you perfect for the WWE, though.

What PH said is an expanded version of what I said ther Prod.
Angle rocks because it's Kurt Fucking Angle. Three I's, playing the guitar and singing, pouring milk on the Undertaker's bike, god damn it has been great. Hell, even this damn perverted angle was great Angle stuff. Angle is one of the best superstars to ever show up on WWE television. It has been an honor and a privlige to see him on WWE TV and I hope that he'll still be around for many years to come.
Not that Prod will get any of that since he's dumber than I am when I get the good weed.

Good point there. I never said Angle wasn't entertaining. He's wayy over as a heel. That's evident every time the crowd chants "You Suck". I'm just not a big fan of his work characterwise. That's all it boils down to. From a storytelling perspective I think there are better performers out there. He's overcome alot in his tenure in WWE. Namely all the neck problems and he still comes back and puts on a great match. I'll give him that. I just think his character has grown stale. Now that he's on RAW they may book him in better storylines but I think the ones he's been involved in on Smackdown the past year have been a little on the dull side. Not to mention the Kurt Angle Invitational which to me really served no purpose other than giving some indy guys some TV time.
Wrestling might be your passion, but you'll be a total failure if someone ever does decide to let you book or promote. Because you have no clue as to what the audience actually wants.

Who are you to proclaim that I'm a failure as a booker/promoter? I have booked shows before and had no problem whatsoever giving the crowd a good show. You can't judge my knowledge of the sport based on my negative comments toward Christian and Kurt Angle. All in all I will admit that I may have been too quick to downplay Kurt's promo skills but I am certainly entitled to my opinion just as you are entitled to yours.

Angle has revamped his character completely as a heel. I don't know how you don't see that. He was a funny, goofy, making fun of each towns sports teams heel at first. Now he's a sick and twisted bad ass heel.
You say you don't like when people have the same exact characters almost thier entire career, but who's your favorite wrestler again? Yea, the man who's played the same gimmick for like 10 years already.

Back to promos...I know what you're all saying about promos "back in the day". I remember promos from the 80's...the GOOD ones, where it was just the wrestler talking directly to the camera (and therefore to the fans) and it was intense. It was as though Jake "The Snake" Roberts or Hacksaw Jim Duggan pushed aside everything else that was on the fans' minds and made it all about THEM, and their intensity was just overwhelming. I used to think of it as cheesy and overacting, but now that I look back on it all, I miss those days. I was excited when ECW One Night Stand kinda brought back the direct promo, but the WWE Invasion force ruined most of them.
Nowadays, good promos are few and far between. Sure, JBL's promos are great for the most part, but overused lines such as "You are Tarzan, I will make you look/act/smell/feel like Jane!" just reek of what we web and graphical designers called "lipstick syndrome"...when you find something great and neat and overuse it to the point of becoming cliche. True, there are such a thing as catchphrases, but they need to be something like "...and that's the bottom line 'cuz Stone Cold said so," used as punctuation, not as dressing and seasoning. I don't want to hear "wrestling god" or the Tarzan/Jane reference mixed in at random point in his promos.
Anyway...yeah. :)

Someone might think they know basketball, but if they walk up to you and say that "That Michael Jordan guy, I think he's a little overrated." I definitely don't want him running my team.
If you can't see the skill and talent in a performer or performers who 99.9% of the intelligent wrestling viewers are fans of, who are you booking for ? The marks in the WWE chat rooms? The throngs of Hardcore Holly fans out there? Those people riveted by Matt hardy's latest diary entries? Who??? You're welcome to your opinion. Pretty basic. The only guys who get to go all out are Triple H, JBL and too an extent, Eddie Guerrero. I'm hoping that with RVD's "I don't have any 'creative geniuses' writing my script tonight, folks" line at ONS that he'll be added to that short list, but one can only dream.

I used to remember when the first 20 minutes of RAW and Smackdown used to be a kick-ass promo by one of the main-eventers. They would talk for like 15 minutes and not get interrupted a lot of the time. That was great. I don't watch wrestling too much anymore, but from what I've gathered, the promos just aren't the same.
Dude, it's still like that. Only the main eventer is Triple H or JBL.
