View Full Version : Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Saw this tonight. It was pretty good, but honestly, I liked the first one much better. Johnny Depp is seriously creepy as Willy Wonka, and it almost gets to the point where he's annoying. I enjoyed Gene Wilder's sarcastic version of WW much more than Depp's loner, weirdo, anti-family version. The Oompa Loompas are fucking creepy too.
Overall a pretty good flick - I'm sure that children will enjoy it much more than I did.

Depp is, surprisingly, the main thing that concerns me about this. He just comes off as annoying more than anything else in the trailer, for me anyway.
I hope I'm wrong. I LOVE LOVE the original but will do my best not to compare the two. I also never read the book so a more faithful adapation as this is supposed to be means nothing to me.

That was pretty good....really really creepy... Depp had some pretty good one liners in there along with the other grandpa....
Great movie...definently different than the original in a way...

I saw it at 1 am last night, and saw about a half of it again after work today. I really really like it.
The 1971 Wonka movie and this one are really different as far as tone and some material goes, so I don't think it's really fair to compare them. They are two very different movies.

^ Totally agree that you can't really compare them. It's like lemons and oranges. They're both adaptions of the book, but they're different in tone and stuff. Both are awesome tho; I think I like the original a little better.

No, he wouldnt.
Also, I really loved this movie. I was kind of worried about what the moral was going to be since they *SPOILER* didnt do the him getting in trouble and losing thing *SPILER* but they went ahead and had anothe rmoral at the end.
Good movie.

Saw this tonight. I liked it but was kinda disappointed that there was no real psychedelic tunnel or whatever. Was looking forward to that part. It was good though. I quite enjoyed it. All the shit that didn't make any sense about the first Willy Wonka was done way more realistic in this one. Like everything could have really been happening in real life, which I liked.

NAH THAT SHIT IS PLAUSIBLE THOUGH. NOT THAT BUT LIKE THE OTHER STUFF THAT MADE NO SENSE. Like the fact that Wonka was giving away the free tour wasn't such a huge deal in the entire world in this movie, where it was like fucking... like HUGE NEWS in the original movie, which is illogical.
And some other shit. I don't even remember the movie at all right now.
Obviously. The wonka ticket shit was all over the newspaper headlines in the new version. It was just as big a deal as it was in the first movie.
but yeah, realistic. my trained squirrels carried away some girl just like in the movie... except they raped her. viciously.

It was way better than the original, mostly because the kid who played Charlie was like 1000x better than the original.
I dunno if I prefer creepy Wonka or sarcastic Wonka, but both seemed to work.

I'm with you.
The ywere both good in their own rights. The Oompa Loompa songs in this seem to be a heavy complaint, but are based on the originals from the book. I actually enjoyed them, and felt they better fit the tone of this movie. The forced backstory of Wonka was annoying, though WHAT a guy to play his father. :D Depp's portrayal WAS kind of annoying at points, and I think if I had to choose, I'd choose Wilder. However, both had their moments. Depp captured the sort of attitude I'd expect from a "Child a t heart" sort of chocolateer, the kind of person whose insight into the world of decadence would give him an edge in Candy. Gene could be sweet and psychotic in the same scene. It's kind of hard to pick. Plus the sort of neo-gothic retro of the new movie was trés cool.
The fact that the Oompa Loompas were all played by one guy was kinda cool, and I liked the Loompa-Land story. The ending was a bit contrived as well, but I wasn't watching for an ending. The part that did bug me was the whole "LEast annoying kid" thing.
I LOVED the way they did the other kids up in this though. Except I didn't think veruca was annoying enough. Yes, I said it. Mike TV was a logical progression, and Violet...Well...Not what I'd expect, but not out of keeping. Agustus? Perfect. The parents? A bit disturbing. Of course, it fits in with the parenting theme inherrent to this version of the film.
I think the movie HAS gotten unfairly panned for not being like the original movie, but I don't think that's entirely a bad thing. The first was done in a very different time, with different effects, and a different world surrounding it. Psychadellia doesn't have the same effect these days.
