Huge rumour brewing that the MLB Commissioner's office is about to suspend Baltimore's Rafael Palmeiro for steriod use steming from an in-season drug test. Buster Olney cut his morning chat on ESPN.com short to follow the story. More to come later (since the O's and White Sox are about to play).

**EDIT 1**

Sosa is playing DH in today's game, and radio team for the White Sox JUST commented on the situation.

As it stands, Palmeiro will be suspended for 10 games for steroid use.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Rafael Palmeiro was suspended for violating Major League Baseball's steroids policy Monday, nearly five months after telling Congress that ``I have never used steroids. Period.''

Palmeiro two weeks ago collected his 3,000th hit, joining Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray as the only players with 3,000 hits and 500 homers.

Palmeiro, 40, is the seventh and highest-profile player to test positive for steroids under the major league policy adopted earlier this year.

In remarks prepared for a conference call Monday, Palmeiro said he had accepted his punishment and could not explain how the steroids got into his body.

``I have never intentionally used steroids. Never. Ever. Period,'' he said. ``Ultimately, although I never intentionally put a banned substance into my body, the independent arbitrator ruled that I had to be suspended under the terms of the program.''

A grievance filed by the players' union against the suspension was denied.

Appearing with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and other baseball stars before a congressional committee on March 17, Palmeiro made an opening statement in which he said: ``Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids. Period. I don't know how to say it any more clearly than that. Never.''

Palmeiro seemed in that appearance to be indignant over accusations made by former slugger Jose Canseco, who cited Palmeiro as a steroid user in his tell-all book. In an interview on the CBS television show ``60 Minutes,'' Canseco -- who also testified before Congress -- said he injected the drug into Palmeiro.

WOW, and to think yesterday I was defending Palmiero when my friend and I were arguing about his future in the Hall of Fame.

It was just a batting practice water bottle, he had no intention of drinking it during the game

Yeah, wasn't someone defending his non-steriod use in another thread?

I was always suspicious of him. He morphed from a 10-15 hr guy to a 30-40 hr guy seemingly overnight

He had me fooled. He has such a gorgeous swing that I didn't really question it. Oh well.

Everything thats happend in baseball over the last 10-20 years is pretty much in question IMO.

I just find it so hard to believe Pamiero did steroids after that congress meeting. Maybe i'm just naive , but thats pretty ballsy to do something like that. I dont think of Palmiero as a ballys individual to do something along those lines.

 good one!

I was always suspicious of him. He morphed from a 10-15 hr guy to a 30-40 hr guy seemingly overnight

I dunno, looking at his stats over the years, it does look like he progressed, the only "huge jump" would be his first 4 years as a full-time player her went fron 8 to 8 to 14 to 26.

If you factor in him getting bigger during his first few years and becoming a better player, along with the "juiced ball era" and he played in two great parks for HR hitters... His doesn't seem like the drastic jump of say Sosa and Mac.

But anything is possible.

I never thought I would say this but...

Jose Canseco actually told the truth? About Raffy? Shit.

That ESPN article has me feeling guilty. I never once thought Raffy was lying.

He is screwed. I really don't see how he can talk himself out of this one.

So, word is at his appeal he named a teammate as the person who gave him the roid.

Even better, the O's interm manager said if it's true, that he named a teammate then he probably shouldn't return to the team.

Gee, think everyone will assume it's Sosa?
