View Full Version : The Con Man
Afterlife

Sure, Matt made his big return last night, and Cena beat buku odds in his title match. But, right or wrong, the squash match made my night.
Everybody knew Venis was going to lose when he came out. But when I saw his opponent, my first thot was "Is that a stripper?" My second thot being "Why are they pushing Conway...in mesh?" Then I saw his promo.
This "Con Man" business is great. I mean, I always felt Conway was creepier than Christian, and even that smile at the end of his promo was almost scary. But the phrases and the look -- even his music is kickass. His finisher is renamed, but even it has a catchphrase now "You might go down to Ego Road, but you don't come back from the Ego Trip."
I dunno; maybe I'm nuts. But this is lookin' like great potential for a great character, heel OR face. This here is the first gimmick polarity shift that shows promise in a loooong time, and I, for one, will be cheering for it.

Its Buff Bagwell for the 21st century. I like Conway, he seems hard working and a genuine student of the game so I hope he can pull it off.

Probably were Gunns told tights...
I walked in half way through the match and my first thought was...Rob Conway Vs Val Venis....Jobber Vs Jobber...what the hell is going on here?
Then after King mentioned The Con Way I remembered hearing about him getting a new gimmick and a push and went "oh yea"....
poor Val will never make it out of jobber hell

Reasons why the "Heat Match on Raw" wrestlers won't get over...
Ron Conway...He looked TERRIBLE. Even though I am a fan of Rob, he looks laughable. And just, kinda, offsetting. He better start cutting some REAL god promos, cause short of having Rock or Jericho's mic skills, I just see this flopping big time, and Rob will be cut in the next round of releases that are due in two or three months once we get 6 new divas.
Val Venis...He doesn't have time. Have you noticed that he now almost runs to the ring, does the towel and is back there to job to someone? Remember when he used to do that real slow strut to the ring, take the towel off and "HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LADIES!" And then he would start talking about how the Big Valboski had a lot in common with...whatever, it was funny, and it got over, when they changed his character back I don't know why they didn't give him the only good part of the character. Oh well.
Sure, Matt made his big return last night, and Cena beat buku odds in his title match.
Sorry, but it's "beaucoup." I use this word quite often, and for some reason it bothered me that you typed it like the name of some African cousin of Haku.
Anyways, Rob Conway has potential, but this "I'm doing it the Con Way" (PUN! PUN! BBQ SAUCE PUN!!!) thing is just fucking stupid. Can't people just be cocky asshole wrestlers anymore without having a lame gimmick or totally sucking ass at it?

Part of the problem is that they started pushing him...ON HEAT. I'm sorry, this would be a good idea (Since he's not really a midcarder even), except they've all but ignored Heat for years. Hell, some people don't even know they started showing matches again. So now they've put him on TV, against Venis. And the question on everyone's mind. Why the fuck should we care?
The new gimmick is interesting. Especially considering the "unique" way he's dressed. but the whole "I fooled you all" thing is so stupid. "You thought I was a french sympathiser." No, I thought you were a jobber with a shit gimmick.

His single's push is gonna go nowhere. I'd rather see him back as a tag team with somebody
btw Val Venis will end up tagging with Johnny Parasi(Swinger)

Had to love his finiaher, was basically la resistance's finisher with the ropes taking the place of the other guy.

Lol. That was worth noting too. What the hell was Johnny Swinger doing on Heat?
He's got as much chance getting off the ground as a NASA rocket.

Conway is equal parts: Billy Gunn, Buff Bagwell, & Rick Rude
but the fucking faggy music has to go.
George Michaels had his hands down his pants when The Con man came out.

Who sings his theme?
At first when I heard it I thought it was going to be Kerwin White.
Then Conway comes out dressing like Billy Gunn and Mr. Slave.
Oh Jesus Christ.

The only way this works if he actually does the poses that Buff Bagwell does and acts exactly like him. He is Buff Bagwell V2.0
...not too mention he could actually wrestle before he went to OVW/WWE. Not too sure anymore.

The gimmick has potential. However, something that seems to be happening over the past year or so is that fans don't seem to accept "new" gimmicks on mid/low card wrestlers who the WWE are trying to make new characters out of. For example, Matt Morgan's stuttering gimmick and possibly Kerwin White's middle class American gimmick when he starts wrestling a little more.
From what has been seen of this Con-man thing so far though does indicate that the guy does have charisma. When I first saw the "Ego-Trip", it looked awesome. But last night on Raw against Val Venis, it looked much sloppier and weak - Which I think may have been because of the awkward position in the ring that it was done.

The only thing "Buff Bagwell" about Conway is his goatee and black shades, don't be hatin' on a playa

He needs to lose the hat and invest in his old "Velocity" tights.
Otherwise, the gimmick could work. Wearing sunglasses while wrestling, LMFAO.

Hopefully he stays off TV for a few weeks, and comes back with a different gimick. Or as part of a new Evolution. Or something. ANYTHING is better than the 'Con Man'.

I loved the crowd though. They really had my opinion.

Maybe if they actually put him against opponents who are not jobbers, that could make a difference to crowd reaction, problem is, half the roster on each show is mainly jobbers because of the roster split/releases they've made.I wonder why they can give this guy a push yet Chavo's new gimmick hasn't even had a match yet.

KK: I agree with that. I personally like his gimmick, but Ii've always been the type of person that, no matter how much I lvoe a gimmick, I'm still spooked by lack of reaction from a crowd. If the crowd's not into it, I start losing interest and feel bad for the guy. WHen I heard the music, I too though Kerwin White, but when he came out, I just thought, "Wow, cool, this should be interesting. A new gimmick in the works." But then, when the crowd was just silent throughout the whole thing, all I could think was "Wow, thank God they're not chanting 'boring'." :)

Well, jobber vs jobber kepts me from getting into it. Plus dead crowd. Plus kind of lackluster match. The gimmick could get him over, but I can't blame people for wondering "why should I care?

havent watched raw in ages...but my hope is that the gimmick gets over.
personally, rob conway is one of my favourite wrestlers. I kinda would have liked la resistance (with sylvain Grenier) to have stayed 2gether a bit longer (or for conway to have turned face on him).
Conway, IMO, has the ability to get over. However, i can't see casual fans ever really getting into him

Val Venis used to be cool. I loved the fued he had with early Kaientai. I really thought they'd chopped the big Valboski off (Before Internet days). I felt so sorry for the guy.
Conways new gimmick is as nowhere near as good as Rico's gay gimmick.

He reminds me of Tobias Fudke from Arrested Development.
I hope he does get over, because he's a great wrestler, and the gimmick is slightly interesting, I just don't know if he will.
Personally, I thought Val Venis was a bad choice of opponent for him. When Venis is on RAW, people know he's losing. The last time he would have won a match on RAW is when he was playing Chief Morely a few years back. I would have had Viscera come out, thinking we'd have an easy win for him, only tohave Conway wrestle a similiar match to what he did with Rosey on Heat, and beat him with the swinging neckbreaker. You know, people actually expecting the guy jobbing to win might actually have gotten this guy over.
