This is what they needed going into SummerSlam - Jericho as a viable contender. Cena sold the hell out of the Walls of Jericho, and the "can't lift him for the FU" bit was pretty formula, but a great bit of the kind of in match continuity that WWE main events have been lacking. Cena got his ass kicked, but still came through, in a surprisingly believable way. That's how you establish your champ.

...so, when Jericho returns, is it Raw or Smackdown? And will he be a face, or whiny heel?

Hey, how 'bout that segway into our next title challenger? Makes it feel like they actually planned ahead. :p

Y'know, watching that smooth transition from Jericho (you'll be missed, Chris) to Angle, with Bisch playing the evil mastermind role perfectly, I'm beginning to (reluctantly) like this Cena-Bischoff feud. The constant attempts to make it Austin-McMahon are ipecac-level vomit-inducers, but the two characters involved are both charismatic and fun to watch. (Bisch is more consistent in both those qualities, of course.) If you tweak the formula a little, it could really click.

And just how would I tweak it? Well, Austin was cheered for constantly gettting the upper hand on his boss. He absolutely destroyed everything in his path, and we believed it, 'cause his character was just enough of a roughneck to sell said ass-kickery. Cena is not so believable as an anti-establishment "tough guy" (he's from the freakin' suburbs of Boston!), but he's got that Austin-like "regular guy" quality, which is why, I think, fans have taken to him. So, rather than have Cena emulate the Austin-esque qualities that he doesn't have, why not play up the one he does - the average joe factor?

Hell, I was marking out for Cena by the end of tonight's match, and I didn't even like him much as a heel. And the thought process that led me to such marking out was simple - Cena is the plucky underdog, wouldn't it be great to see him win. What they need to do with Angle is maintain that feeling. WWE, we're not stupid - we know Angle can outwrestle Cena. And, quite frankly, the combined brainpower of Kurt and Eric should be enough to outsmart Cena. But if you turn Cena into that likeable underdog who manages to come through when it counts (shades of Mick Foley) - then you might have something.

There's potential gold in this feud, but it sure ain't in the messy rehash of Austin/McMahon they've been giving us.

I don't get what you're saying

During Austin's title reign, Vince teamed (in one way or another) with Kane, Undertaker, Rock, Dude Love, Mankind, & various mid-carders.... all to try to get the belt off of him.

As much as I will enjoy watching Cena get the shit kicked out of him by Angle, we are just following the same old pattern. First Jericho, now Angle... who's next? HBK? Brock? Edge? Kane?

That was a good Raw tonight. Aside from the pointless heel turn of Torrie Wilson and Candice Michelle, I am interested who they were traded for. Kurt Angle transitioning to No. 1 contender was great after his equally great match with Shelton Benjamin, which should propell him to the InterContinental title scene.

A note on Shelton Benjamin, I would not be surprised if he was traded back to Smackdown! Remember before he was drafted to Raw, he had a good showing in that Slobber Knocker Type match to be the No. 1 contender before he eventually lost. I think after his great match with Kurt Angle, he could be a good challenger to Chris Benoit or even Batista.

yea, like I keep pointing out, If it's worked in the past, i.e. Hogan and Austin, keep following the formula. Cena is on fire right now with the crowd and he is the biggest draw, so feeding him heels is the correct thing to do IMO. The WWE lacked good babyfaces that could draw for a while and now they got one in Cena.

Exactly what I think.

It's not that I'm not a fan of Cena, it's just the guys he goes up against (Jericho, Angle, etc.) could all own Cena on any given night, realistically, yet most of the time the WWE tries to make Cena look invincible like he's the world's greatest wrestler, despite the fact 96% of the moves he uses in his matches are illegal.

If the WWE tried to show us the wrestling side of Cena, and had him match *skills* with Jericho and Angle, instead of just hitting them with punches in an attempt to channel Stone Cold, he would be the most sympathetic babyface in the WWE.

By the way am I the only one to notice that while John Cena is the writers project, Shelton seems to be the wrestlers project. Yes, the writers put Cena over in everything, but no one in the uppercard really makes him. Where as Shelton, while booked to lose is put over by every member of the uppercard. Triple H busted ass to make him, Shawn busted ass to make him, and Kurt busted ass to make him. I think it just goes to show that while these guys get shit for their politics, they are smart enough to see someone who could really be the next big thing in the industry.

Y2J gets fired, he should have decked Bishop and walked off on his own, this allows him to come back as a face, and anti-bishof.

Instead, whereever he returns everyone will remember the cryer who hugged bishof leg begging to save his job for his wife/kid.

With the way they job'd Y2J the last few months, wasn't that bad enough.... to put him out this way, I hope his band really goes huge and he never comes back, maybe a once a year like the Rock used to.
