View Full Version : Another Dudley gets screwed

Another Dudley bites the dust. According to the webmaster of Spike Dudley's official website, Spike will join his "Dudley Brothers" in having to come up with a new ring name once his 90 day no compete period ends next month. The webmaster made the comments on the site's message forum in response to queries made by readers after the issue with the Dudley Boyz name came up last week.

Spike was informed that he would be unable to use any combination of the Spike or Dudley name, as well as any likenesses or similarities to the character he portrayed in WWE. Spike had been using the name since his ECW debut in the Fall of 1996. Spike is said to have come up with a new ring name but is keeping mum until he applies and receives a trademark on it.

Last week, WWE informed the former Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley that they would not be able to use their ring names or the intellectual properties that came with those personas. It was the first case of WWE telling performers that they are unable to use names and characters that were devised prior to their WWE debut, in another company, after their WWE tenure has ended.

It should be interesting to see what other names and personas WWE tries to lay claim to legally in the coming months.

I think Spike Dudley and The Dudley Boyz should challenge this in court.

Trademarks versus original owner of the name(s)

I doubt it is too smart to butt heads with a corporation the size of the WWE but I think the WWE's trademark on those names should be made invalid and the WWE should have never been given the trademark paperwork.

The Dudleys (at least Bubba Ray and D-Von) should have copyrighted their name right when they jumped from ECW, especially 'Dudley'. That way this never would have happened.

Did Heyman ever own the rights to the Dudley name? On that note, did Heyman/ECW own any of the wrestler's names?

This could be a blessing in disguise. The whole 'runt of the litter' Spike gimmick was getting old. Mathew Hyson could re-invent himself. I know for sure I wouldn't give a shit if Spike Dudley was wrestling in a fed near me - but Spike re-invented - at least I'd be curious

I'll think you'll find this man has rights on anything to do with the phrase 'diddy'

He also still owns the letter P

This of course came to light when sesame street was presented by the number 4 and the letter P, after a lenghty legal dispute Jim Henson's lawlers settled out of court with Mr Diddy

Since none of them appear to want to fight it, he should just change his name to LSD - short for Little Spike Dudley, as he was once known. Devon, Bubba and LSD. No Dudleys, but everyone knows who they are anyway - and with names being close like that, it works :y:

I guess they can't call their finisher the Dudley Death Drop anymore.

I dunno how well renaming it to The New York City Terror Drop would go over.

They could call it the Spudley Torpedo Drop. Gary Spudley and Tyrone Spudley = Ticket Sales

Can't they use the name '3D'? They're going by that right now...

"BAH GAWD! TYRONE AND GARY WITH THE STD!!!"

Sorry, the use of the word BAHGAWD is also trademarked by the WWE so you couldn't use that either
