Didn't see a thread on it.
I just got back, for some reason we went to a 12:05 showing, but I just wanted to see what other people thought of it, I'm not quite sure my opinion yet.
Right off the bat it wasn't what I expected it to be, but that could have been the population of drunks in the crowd. It started out almost like a comedy, and that confused me, but when it got later into it, I thought it got real good. You are waiting for something heroic or cliche to happen, but it just doesn't. This isn't a drama, its not like Saving Private Ryan or those war movies, but this is a much more realistic look into a war. It shows soliders being real people instead of comic book heroes, and I think thats what made it good.
Did this movie remind anybody else of Full Metal Jacket? I kept thinking that throughout the whole movie.
I would say that its a really good movie and I would recommend going to see it, but just be aware that its not a war action-drama, but quite frankly I don't know how to describe it.

Oh, what I meant when I talked about all the drunk people...I understand parts of it are supposed to be funny, especially in the beginning, but every mention of "fucking" or anything like that got giggles from the crowd, and I don't think that was how it was intended at the times.

Yeah I think I'm going to go see it today. I heard some people compare it to Full Metal Jacket. Also like you said I heard it wasn't a very action oriented war movie. Only problem is I have no fucking idea where the theater is that shows it. Cause like there are two Marcus theaters by each other, one I know where its at other is somewhere else. Need to Mapquest that shit.

Haven't seen it, but I find it funny you've got Marines calling themselves Jarheads. Last I checked, that was an insult.

It was good. I rather enjoyed it. Halfway through the movie, I was like, "damn I love this movie." But then it kinda started to drag a bit. It was still entertaining, but just more sporadically in the second half.
I would definitely recommend it to customers at the video store and whatnot.
And yeah, there were a ton of Full Metal Jacket similarities. They even took the "You _____ like old people fuck" line.

I think alot of the lines were directly referencing FMJ actually.
Anyway, I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. I knew coming in (from the reviews) that it wasn't much of a war movie, so I wasn't surprised by the lack of combat. It was entertaining and realistic, and pretty damn funny too...

The ending with the Marines firing their guns in the air reminded me of Full Metal Jacket

Where do you guys that have seen it, rank it in regards to other war movies?

It's not like other war movies. It's not the brave soldiers doing something spectacular and winning a big battle, its a bunch of normal soldiers in a war waiting to do something. I wouldn't say its like other war movies much at all.

I saw it Thursday night, and I really really liked it. Jamie Foxx was such a bad ass in that movie.
I had to clean Jarhead's theater today, and as I walked out during the credits with the door open, the kid's movie Dreamer just got out. Kids were walking through the hallway, and during Jarhead's credits, it yelled, "IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY DREAM, TO BE A BAD ASS MOTHERFUCKING US MARINE." Little kids were all confused and looking at their parents, and the parents were giving me dirty looks. It was fantastical.

I agree with you on this. I basically did the exact same thing. Thinking to myself how I was actually watching a good movie in the theater since past few have sucked. Then I felt id dragged at moments as well. Still good movie.

I am kind of surprised at how popular its debut was. I guess the theaters here were sold out all day. The showing I went to, starting at midnight, was completely packed. People were sitting on the floor. It was like a Star Wars or something.

It was alright. Too much Full Metal Jacket in there. But it picked up at the second half and became it's own movie--that's where it really shined. And that's not saying much. It wasn't anything really special.

Except the people dressed up like characters from the movie stood a chance at getting laid later in life.

The movie is just like being in a real world....
10 minutes into it you want to shoot yourself in the foot and go home.
Seriously, I haven't seen it yet. I just heard that from movies.com. It's not on my "OMFG MUST SEE LIST!!!!" There's a good chance I'll wait 'till it hits DVD.

I heard it sucked and I could tell it might just by the previews and shit. Plus that fucking theme it had going for it..was just such a fucking nuisance.

The theme isn't played in the actual movie.

I think jarhead is a name the marines give themselves.

I think its one of those deals depends on who is saying jarhead. If someone in the navy calls a marine a jarhead look out, but among marines it cool.

Saw it today. It was good to watch once, but I couldn't watch it again.
*** SPOILERS!!****
IMO, the entire movie was just anti-climatic, much like the main characters war itself.. Meh

I didn't really have any expectations because of the critics. While the second part wasn't as entertaining, it was still a really good movie.

Great film. One of the best I've seen in months in the cinema or on DVD. The main character's journey was choatic but entertaining and some of the scenes were visual porn (sitting with Jamie Foxx with burning oil fields in the rear talking about his career and doing the job he loves).
However one of the best things about this film was looking round the cinema and noticing that every single bloke was looking up in awe at the screen, everyone saying to themselves that "fuck, I wish I was doing that". The testosterone in that room was unbelievable.
