LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Two TV families appear to be getting the boot.

The Camdens will bid farewell to viewers in May when the WB Network's top-rated family drama "7th Heaven" ends its run after 10 seasons in what sources said was largely a cost-cutting move.

The Bluth clan of Fox's ratings-challenged "Arrested Development" is also headed for the exit after Fox cut the third-season order on the Emmy-winning comedy to 13 episodes.

Also getting the ax at Fox is "Arrested's" companion on Monday, the freshman comedy "Kitchen Confidential," whose order will not be extended beyond the initial 13 episodes.

"7th Heaven," whose debut on August 26, 1996, marked the first-ever Monday broadcast of the then-fledging WB Network, will bow out as the longest-running family drama on television.

After 10 seasons, the show is still a top draw for WB, averaging 5.1 million viewers this season to date. Creatively, the show also will go out in style, creator Brenda Hampton said.

"I think this is the best season we've ever had, and we're planning a very exciting and heartwarming conclusion to the series," she said. "On the show, we talk about choosing your feelings, and we chose to feel happy and blessed to have been on the air for so long."

There is talk about a potential "7th Heaven" spinoff, but Hampton admits that would be hard to do.

"('7th Heaven') is a family show," she said. "I think the success of the show is that the family is intact with the mom, the dad and the children, so it is a very difficult show to spin off."

Sources indicated that the reasons to take "7th Heaven" off the air were primarily financial. As series age, they get more and more expensive, with the price tag especially high for a show with a large cast like "7th Heaven." The cancellation of the long-running series also comes during a process of extensive cost-cutting across all Warner Bros. divisions.

As for the demise of "Arrested," it comes just as the acclaimed comedy came back this week after a hiatus to make room for Fox's baseball coverage. The two back-to-back episodes averaged a paltry 4 million viewers Monday, sending Fox to fifth place in the 8 p.m. hour and putting a dent on the ratings of its lead-out, the rookie drama "Prison Break."

There is a possibility that the show will be shopped around, but its high cost is expected to be prohibitive for a cable network.

Fox said Thursday that it will pull "Arrested Development" and "Kitchen Confidential" off the schedule for the remaining three Mondays of the November sweep, replacing them with a rerun of the previous episode of "Prison Break" leading into an original episode of the serialized drama.

"Arrested" and "Kitchen" are set to return to their time slots with original episodes December 5, following the fall finale of "Prison Break" on November 28.

By Andrew Wallenstein
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Showtime unveiled four new series at the Television Critics Assn.'s winter press tour Thursday -- but "Arrested Development" wasn't one of them.
Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt confirmed recent reports that Showtime was in negotiations with producer 20th Century Fox Television to pick up the low-rated Fox comedy but warned that no deal has been reached.
"I always thought it was a better fit for a cable network than a broadcast network," Greenblatt said of "Arrested." "It really does fit in with a lot of things that we're doing."
While Greenblatt declined to get into the specifics of the negotiations, he noted that one crucial deal point hinged on the involvement of Mitch Hurwitz, creator and executive producer of "Arrested." Hurwitz has not decided whether he wants to continue working on the show given, as Greenblatt put it, the "emotional roller coaster" the series has been during its three-year run.
Showtime's new original series include "Dexter," a crime drama starring Michael C. Hall ("Six Feet Under") as a serial killer, and "The Tudors," a historical drama with Jonathan Rhys Meyers ("Match Point") starring as a young King Henry VIII.
Also on the way is a six-episode adaptation of the radio program "This American Life" and sketch comedy series "Damon Wayans' The Underground."
All series but "Tudors," which will bow in 2007, will air this year.
Showtime also announced that it will bring back late-night series "Penn & Teller: Bull----" for two more seasons. Anthology series "Masters of Horror" also will be back for another season. In addition, Showtime has at least six documentaries ready to roll out this year on subjects as varied as medical marijuana and the Oklahoma City bombing.
Whether "Arrested" joins Showtime's schedule will affect the return of other Showtime series waiting to deliver second seasons that Greenblatt hasn't committed to yet, including "Barbershop" and "Sleeper Cell."
Greenblatt showed clips of "Dexter," which will be shot on location in Miami, that made ample use of blood-drenched crime scenes. "With all due respect to our new partners at CBS, this is not your father's 'CSI,"' Greenblatt said, alluding to the restructuring at parent company Viacom Inc. that left Showtime under the auspices of CBS Corp. The 12-episode, hourlong series should bow late this year.
"Tudors," an account of the lesser-known early years of King Henry VIII, will begin shooting in the spring in Ireland.
Greenblatt hailed the casting of Rhys Meyers, fresh off his win at the Golden Globes for the CBS miniseries "Elvis," as a coup for Showtime. "The fact that he has decided to commit to a series in the middle of his feature career taking off says a lot," Greenblatt said.
Reuters/Hollywood Reporter

Come on Mitch, do it for your country :(

The other day, Fox idiotface head president stupid said it was very unlikely Arrested Development would air again on Fox, and that they're showing the last 4 episodes together on february 10 or something over there.

Boomer
01-20-2006, 12:52 PM
