So, yeah.
With the recent release of Advent Children in Japan and soon in America, the interest in the Final Fantasy games is climbing again. This raises a question to me though. It seems like practically everyone loves a different FF than the next guy. So what's your favorite/least favorite?
As for my favorite, I'm undecided. I loved the old school ones, but I REALLY love the newer ones (even the online one is DECENT, but that's about as far as I'll go with that).
7 was great, and I know many others would vouch for that one too. Great characters, great story, and the fact that it's considered an older title now that people are STILL playing adds even more credibility to it. I was in sixth grade when it came out, and I'm now in my second year of college. Still playing it to this day too. Never get tired of hearing The Turks Theme, The Shinra Theme, and One Winged Angel.
8 got a bad rap, in my opinion. I LOVED the military system (SeeD and all), as well as the drawing function. I didn't really care too much about the side characters (some of them anyways, such as Sephie, Quistis, or Zell), aside from Irvine, Seifer, Fujin, and Raijin. It had a pretty gay last villain (Ultimecia, for those who don't remember), but I liked the character of Squall aside from the fact that he was the digital equivalent of an emo kid. He was able to pull the character off well though (in my opinion anyways), not annoying in the least with his quiet demeanor and sulky attitude. The Galbadia/Balamb Garden battle was freaking amazing too.
Skipping 9 for now, you'll see why.
Going to FFX. LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT. From the second I picked it up, I was sucked into the game. Had pretty smooth side characters (Auron and Rikku inparticular), and I liked Tidus's dilemma of how to get back home to Zanarkand as well as the realization that his father was Sin. I also thought Seymour was a pretty badass villain, wanting to kill the people of Spira. If they were dead, Sin couldn't harm them. Kind of cliche in a way, but it beats the whole usual "I want to become God over all of you" thing.
X-2...was a game that got shit on for unjust reasons, in my opinion. I play X-2 more than most games to this day. Yes, it was full of fanservice, which I openly admit (and love), but I liked the chapter type selections, as well as the Dressphere/Garment Grid system. I don't think X-2 was ever meant to be the huge epic that many of the other Final Fantasies have been, but when I'm playing it, I don't even notice, as I'm too drawn into the gameplay. Plus I could listen to Yuna (LeBlanc, actually) doing Real Emotion in the beginning over and over.
As for my least favorite? NINE. I realize a lot of people like it because it was closer to the roots of the original Final Fantasies than 7, 8, X, etc. were, but I couldn't get into it. Didn't like any of the characters (aside from Vivi, who was the man), and it had an absolutely gay villain in Kuja. This is me speaking personally, but Kefka >>>>>>>> Kuja. I had IX rented out for a week or so, and I haven't played it since. That game disgusted me so much in a short time that I immediately speak negatively of it to my friends. A few of them have actually tried it and share my views on it. I guess we all got spoiled to the new futuristic motif in many of the other FFs, but as far as I'm concerned, IX was nothing more than a lackluster effort. Many people were enjoying the futuristic/sci-fi type things, so why fix what's not broken?
At any rate, those are my opinions. So what about the rest of you guys?
