So, yeah.

With the recent release of Advent Children in Japan and soon in America, the interest in the Final Fantasy games is climbing again. This raises a question to me though. It seems like practically everyone loves a different FF than the next guy. So what's your favorite/least favorite?

As for my favorite, I'm undecided. I loved the old school ones, but I REALLY love the newer ones (even the online one is DECENT, but that's about as far as I'll go with that).

7 was great, and I know many others would vouch for that one too. Great characters, great story, and the fact that it's considered an older title now that people are STILL playing adds even more credibility to it. I was in sixth grade when it came out, and I'm now in my second year of college. Still playing it to this day too. Never get tired of hearing The Turks Theme, The Shinra Theme, and One Winged Angel.

8 got a bad rap, in my opinion. I LOVED the military system (SeeD and all), as well as the drawing function. I didn't really care too much about the side characters (some of them anyways, such as Sephie, Quistis, or Zell), aside from Irvine, Seifer, Fujin, and Raijin. It had a pretty gay last villain (Ultimecia, for those who don't remember), but I liked the character of Squall aside from the fact that he was the digital equivalent of an emo kid. He was able to pull the character off well though (in my opinion anyways), not annoying in the least with his quiet demeanor and sulky attitude. The Galbadia/Balamb Garden battle was freaking amazing too.

Skipping 9 for now, you'll see why.

Going to FFX. LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT. From the second I picked it up, I was sucked into the game. Had pretty smooth side characters (Auron and Rikku inparticular), and I liked Tidus's dilemma of how to get back home to Zanarkand as well as the realization that his father was Sin. I also thought Seymour was a pretty badass villain, wanting to kill the people of Spira. If they were dead, Sin couldn't harm them. Kind of cliche in a way, but it beats the whole usual "I want to become God over all of you" thing.

X-2...was a game that got shit on for unjust reasons, in my opinion. I play X-2 more than most games to this day. Yes, it was full of fanservice, which I openly admit (and love), but I liked the chapter type selections, as well as the Dressphere/Garment Grid system. I don't think X-2 was ever meant to be the huge epic that many of the other Final Fantasies have been, but when I'm playing it, I don't even notice, as I'm too drawn into the gameplay. Plus I could listen to Yuna (LeBlanc, actually) doing Real Emotion in the beginning over and over.

As for my least favorite? NINE. I realize a lot of people like it because it was closer to the roots of the original Final Fantasies than 7, 8, X, etc. were, but I couldn't get into it. Didn't like any of the characters (aside from Vivi, who was the man), and it had an absolutely gay villain in Kuja. This is me speaking personally, but Kefka >>>>>>>> Kuja. I had IX rented out for a week or so, and I haven't played it since. That game disgusted me so much in a short time that I immediately speak negatively of it to my friends. A few of them have actually tried it and share my views on it. I guess we all got spoiled to the new futuristic motif in many of the other FFs, but as far as I'm concerned, IX was nothing more than a lackluster effort. Many people were enjoying the futuristic/sci-fi type things, so why fix what's not broken?

At any rate, those are my opinions. So what about the rest of you guys?

Favourite - Final Fantasy IX, which is also my favourite game of all time.

Aside from the trance system (Which isn't awful, it just has some flaws that need ironing out) some annoying areas (Fossil Roo and Gargan Roo) and the fact that its very easy, I struggle to see huge gaping flaws in the game.

Its better written than any FF, the storyline is presented in a decent and appropriate manner that fits in with the atmosphere and the setting. The characters are all given very good development and are most of all, more entertaining than any of the characters in the other 2 PS1 FF games.

Kuja "absolutely gay villain"? Aside from Kuja being effeminate and walking around in a purple thong, I don't see whats wrong with him. Hes more charismatic, intelligent and complex than any FF villain before or since. He destroyed an entire planet by himself and brought another one almost to its knees. On top of that, he then tried to destroy the very existence of life itself.

What a fag eh?

So yeah, FF9 = the best for me. No game has ever been nearly as enjoyable for me. And its not because it was closer to the roots, its that it was simply a much better game. So what if its not sci fi? Its not as if sci fi settings suddenly make the game good or bad.

Least Favouite FF however? FFX.

I dislike this game immensly. I got this game and spent about half of it sitting there playing it waiting for it to get good. I don't like the sphere system, I think the characters are boring or annoying, the storyline bored the hell out of me and each plot twist was predictable and I found my self giving less and less of a shit every minute I played it.

Also, all of the FF games are linear, but at least the other games didn't literally stick you on one path and force you down it the entire game. Oh, and some of the cutscenes are beyond cheesy. The laughing scene springs to mind. Never have I cringed so much in a game, ever.

I think the games saving grace for me though is that Bender is in it.

The villain was shite too. I didn't manage to complete it all, but there are other villains aside from that blue haired guy and the evil whale right?

My favourite.... It's hard to choose between FFVI and FFIX.

FFVI was awesome in that it had an awesome villain, awesome story, awesome characters, and awesome system. Awesome music too. I liked how the game never really focused on one character more than any other. It doesn't force you to continually use anybody.

FFIX was awesome as well. Except the ending bit where the final boss comes out of nowhere. But I can live with that. I just LOVED the graphic look of this game, and thought that it should be what all Final Fantasy games should strive to be. This game was just plain good old fashioned fun.

My LEAST favourite would have to be FFX. That game was just so crappy. I hated all the characters, I hated the sphere system, I hated Blitzball (the mini game that isn't so mini, and is impossible to lose at if you do it right), I hated the story, I hated not being able to go where I please. I also hated the graphics. They were pretty horrible. As far as "realistic" graphics go I liked FFVIII's graphics way better.

I usually respect other people's opinions but... I get angry when I hear people say this game is so good because it just stood out as so bad.

FF9: This was bad, I hated Zidane, he was the worst character ever. Vivi was ace, and the story was decent.

Vivi.
Amarant.

Best Other Characters:
Blank and the rest of Tantulas.

FF10: My Second favourite, the characters rocked, Tidus and Wakka were a great double team, and Auron rocked, Sin and Seymour were great bad guys.
Best Main Characters:
All of them.

Best Other Characters:
All of them.

FF10-2: This was good, very funny and entertaining. It shouldn't be considered as a proper FF though.

Best Main Characters:
Yuna.

Paige.

All the ones returning from FF10.

Well, of the Final Fantasies I've played, VII is my least favorite. With III US in second place. My all time favorite game is II US as well as the first RPG I ever played. Although Cecil Dark Knight > Cecil Paladin :naughty:

FF6 would def have to be my favourite of the series. Awesome storyline, excellent characters, hot villain, lots of extra ish to do, and quite possibly the best soundtrack for a videogame ever. <3 Nobuo Uematsu. FF5 is probably my 2nd favourite, because the Job system is just so damn cool. Storyline's really good too, too bad the only way to play it translated is via ROM (AFAIK anyway, not sure if they released it on one of those PSX 'collection' things or not). 7 would probably be my next favourite.

If we're not going by strictly the RPG games, Tactics would probably be a close 2nd to FF6

My favourite actually has to be FF8. I don't know quite why. I just loved the whole military thing. Only thing about it was that I hated the drawing system, cause it was a pain in the ass having to stand around drawing 100 magic from everything.

I traded in my PSX version for the PC version just so I could hack it, skip all the drawing, and just give myself 100 of whatever I came across. I wouldn't give myself stuff I couldn't get though, or stuff I only got from draw points.

My least favourite is probably FF10, for the reasons others have mentioned here.

I also didn't like FF5 cause of that whole job system thing. But honestly, I never played that much of it so I can't really judge.

Fave-FFVII: The first FF I ever played. My favourite villian in any game (Sephiroth, duh). Great music, great graphics (for the time), great story, great characters, lots to do.

Honorable Mentions-FFX: for beautiful graphics, and the most believable main character.
FF Tactics: For being the only PS1 game I still play regularly (too bad about the shitty translation)

Worst-FFIX-I just didn't connect with any of the characters, and Kuja is a terrible villain.
