While I'm in my living room I able to get on like 3 different signals, if I go on their connection just to use AIM on my laptop, is there anyone they can find out? Also is there anything they can do about it..I'm assuming it would be illegal but I don't know for sure.

Sorry if this typing is all fucked, I think I have like a mild concussion right now or something
There are some things they can do to see but they most likely wouldn't be able to tell unless they were looking to see if someone was using it. And there's really nothing they can do but put a password on the connection. If they are stupid enough to leave it open and you can get on go for it.
Most likely they can, but the fact that they didn't even put a password on their connection shows they probably don't know how.
Just make sure you don't have any sensitive files in my shared documents, or any other shared folder because they might be able to access it depending on ur comp settings

What they said. If they have there wireless connection with no PW, odds are they don't know a whole lot about computers, so they wouldn't even realize you were on there. Nor could they figure out how to see if someone was using their connection for free. It's like stealing free cable as far as legality goes though, it's illegal, but if they don't physically catch you doing it, they can't really prove it, nor could you be prosecuted. Enjoy free internet!

Oh wow, I didn't even think of this.
As a followup question, how do I go about encrypting Wee Gooner's wireless dealy?
Go to your routers IP (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 usually, depends on your router) and then put your password in there. Remember, the long the password the harder it is to figure out.

Local laws might make what you're doing illegal, but there aren't a lot of federal laws for using an open connection.

Last year, you could get on tons of wireless connections downtown here in Lansing. They are kinda making an effort to cut down on it now, but it was crazy. This guy in one of my classes made a profit walking into places with a laptop and showing businesses stuff that was in their shared folder and then securing their connections.

There really is no reason for me to leech other people's connections. I have my own internet in my house except I dont have the wireless router.
