Damn pandas

What were your thoughts when this lawsuit happened in 2002?

WWF still sounds better IMO :(

as lawsuit happy as vince is these days, he should of been better prepared back then to get his ass handed to him by the wildlife fund.

it should still be WWF.

I don't care. It's still the same company.

Although "The WWF" makes more sense compared to "The WWE"...

"The World Wrestling Federation" vs. "The World Wrestling Entertainment"...

I was confused, since the primary battle seemed to be over "WWF.com." ".com" traditionally is used for commercial organizations, which the Federation was and the Fund was not.

Granted, Vince was overstepping the bounds of their prior arrangement, so WWF was well within their rights.

It just seemed odd to me.

It should still be the WWF, not WWE, however I'm used to it. If Vinne Mac Daddy gets the rights to call it the WWF again that's cool. If he can never do that then it's no big deal.

The fund was bitching that WWF.com would steal their hits and confuse the people who meant to go to WWF.org

Does anyone honestly think Vince WANTS to get rid of the "Entertainment" in the name?

Vince should just get rights when it pertains to old footage and history. Allow them to use the WWF scratch logo and say "WWF" on old footage and allow them to use "WWF"... Like "The Rock was a 7 time WWF champion!"...

World Wildlife Fund should have just turned into World Wildlife Energies. They could have done a big campaing and told people to "Get the F out and save the animals!"

The whole thing is such a bullshit situation. First, Vince is stupid and stubborn - all he had to do was offer to donate like one million dollars a year, and he could keep the initials forevermore because they'd take it. It wasn't a damn thing to do with market confusion, although that may be the claim, because the Wildlife Fund ended up selling the rights to WWF.com to a fucking wrestling forum, which went totally against the supposed "point" of the argument, and it ended up not being used for anything. The fact was, The Fund asked them not to use the initials in advertising in the UK, Vince went against that blatantly, so he had no right to complain (if he ever did), and the Fund are idiots for taking such major action over such a petit thing.

Why didn't they just change the wwf.com to WorldWrestlingFederation.com?

I stopped reading right there... because it got very stupid. Ahem.. "All he had to do was donate one million a year".. That's it? Do you know how much money a million dollars is... a year.... That's why Vince McMahon is a successful business man and you never will be. Why pay all that money to them when you really don't have to? durr?

LivingDead

Wasn't the name change to WWE meant to be only a temporary thing until Vince bought the rights to WWF?
Then he decided he actually liked using WWE so he decided not to bother doing anything and just leave the fund have WWF?

I remember reading that a long time ago.

X-F-L. Vince threw away CONSIDERABLY more money with that fucking drek, so don't tell me that losing one million is a bad business move, but Vince losing tens of millions on a renegade football league that damaged his reputation and was highly unlikely to be successful in the first place, makes him a successful businessman.

Yeh, I'm sure that it would have made Vince live in a cardboard box if he gave away a massive one million dollars a year in order to preserve the name of his company that people identified with, especially at a time when WWE was as good as it has ever been financially (2000-2002). And it probably cost them far more in terms of actually switching the name from WWF to WWE in the interim (which was actually something Vince said when defending why it should remain the WWF) than giving them a measly million dollars a year to shut them up and continue on an established and recognised name that they had built their business on. I'm not so sure that you are exactly Bill Gates yourself when it comes to business, my good man.

World Wildlife Fund should have just turned into World Wildlife Energies. They could have done a big campaing and told people to "Get the F out and save the animals!"

I was thinking that maybe The Fund could change their name to GIFTCON.
This acronym means:

Global
Initative
For
The
Conservation
Of
Nature

Then we could, if Vince gave half a damn, and wasn't a stupid n00b, watch him get the WWF initials back, and we could be watching the much easier to say World Wrestling Federation, OUR WWF.:D

P.S. Don't any of you find the words World Wresting Federation and WWF initials easier to say than World Wrestling Entertainment and WWE?:wtf:

By the way, this is my 50th post here. Not bad for an intermittent poster. :D

The WWF sounds much better, though now "WWE" seems to suit the company more - apart from wrestling, the WWE is in the music, and movie industries (I'm pretty sure there is one other that I'm forgetting).

The original dispute (as some people above were implying, I think), over the use of "WWF". The World Wildlife Fund said it was OK for the WWF to just say "World Wrestling Federation", and I do not understand why the Federation had to not follow that. Maybe it is just me, but "World Wrestling Federation" sounds more "professional" (lacking a better word) than "WWF".

I think the actual parent company name is "World Wrestling Federation Entertainment", so I thought it may have still been possible for them to just use "World Wrestling Federation" in cases like "This match is for the World Wrestling Federation Title", or something (I have no real idea about legal things, though).

Honestly, you think they would go back to THAT?

"And here comes John Cena, the W-W-W-F champion! And you can find out more about him on W-W-W-dot-W-W-W-F-dot-com!"

Yeah, the whole reason they went from WWWF to WWF was almost purely because it was easier to say and sounded better.

Well, it's about market confusion. Everyone thinks .com when they look for an internet address.

I don't really give an "F" one way or another though. WWE, the WWF? Same company. I think that people who spazzed out about the Heartless "Fund" need to get over themselves, but I wasn't exactly going to jump for joy when the Panda won.

If you ask the average person what the no.1 wrestling company in the world is "They will say the wwf".

For that reason alone is makes sense for the wwe to change back

yeah "World Wrestling Entertainment" just doesn't have a ring to it

do you guys remember back during title matches they used to say "This is for the World Wrestling Federation Intercontinental Championship!" they never say "This is for the World Wrestling Entertainment..." they always say WWE, just cuz World Wrestling Entertainment sounds so stupid

the panda bears wanted the wwf.com domain right? Well they don't fucking have it now, it was owned by some message board, and now one of those search engines you see on recycled domains. They aren't even TRYING to get it from them.

and yeah, i nearly cried when they changed it to WWE :shifty:

Actually, they didn't want it for them selves in all probability. They wanted Vince NOT to have it because of the association. They didn't want the association to continue (And this also goes out to HB2K's "petite" argument) because Vince McMahon trampled over a good faith agreement thinking he was untouchable.

The WWE deserves to still be called "WWF" because the name recognition associated with "WWF" is wrestling. Everyone I know still calls it "WWF", in news articles when writer's draw reference to wrestling, they say "WWF". Survey a random hundred people on the street as to what WWF is, and I'm sure that close to 100% will say "wrestling", rather than "World Wildlife Fund."

I really don't mind WWE in the present, the only thing that I can't stand is how they need to mute out "WWF" on old footage.

The World Wildlife Fund could have just changed it's name to WWC (World Wildlife Charity) and WWE could have kept the name WWF.

But if the WWE does manage to get the WWF name back, I would die from marking out if they brought back the name in this way.

*RAW Starts and Vince makes his way to the ring*

He says that we are all in for a VERY special surprise tonight, and this surprise will change WWE forever.

So after a couple of matches, Vince comes out again and says "Ladies and Gentlemen, The WWE have had some hard time in the past, but we have also had some great times in the past. But what I'm about to say next will be the best thing in WWE History. I doubt this but do you all remember when the WWE were called The WWWF? then we changed it to....

*Stone Colds music starts and he makes his way to the ring*

Austin says something like "Remember when I use to hate Vince's" guts and stuff like that.

Then after a couple of minutes of talking Vince says "Well next week, RAW is going to be in MSG and that'll be where we have the big surprise.

So the next week everything is normal.

But when the camera goes around the crowd, the stage isn't there. Istead, there is a big black cloth over it. Then Vince comes out and repeats what he said last week, then he says "Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome back....The WWF!!!!!

*Then it cuts to the old RAW IS WAR Intro, but this time it's the new wrestlers are in it this time*

Then the old music is playing and the camera shows the stage, then the fireworks go off and the cloth has been removed and its thew old stage *The one with the fists at the side or the one with the big structures with "WWF Attitude" on them, whatever you like best) Then it goes to J.R and Jerry, and there in there old place beside the ring. Then some old wrestlers comes out and we all mark out.

And they bring back the old WWF Title (the round one) they also bring back the European, Hardcore, Light Heavyweight Titles.

That's what I would love to happen.
