It's true according to Nintendo's site, Nintendo themselves, the packaging, and people who have attempted to use it on 98/ME/2000.

However, there IS good news...You can pick up a similar non Nintendo adapter at an electronics store, or just get a farkin' router.

Nintendowifi.com has a lot of information. There should be a UK version on that page.

Routers aren't all that expensive for a basic model. You can find a bunch of them for the price of the adapter. You can also use a Wireless adapter by another company which can be used, but if the setup for a router is too complex (They're pretty easy, IMO), you might be fucked...

PC World, Dixons, Curry's, Staples, any PC store should have some.

Well the first one is a memory stick, so that wouldn't be very helpful for setting up a wireless connection.

ok i was just on the phone to a friend and he said that i need a wireless router or wireless broadband...
he said that he pays £30 a month for BT.
so could you explain step by step how to use the second one and set it up?
and woudl there be any fees?

I haven't got wireless broadband and it works for me fine. In fact I use the very cable and wireless USB adapter that you linked to there.

Extreme Angle

so what do you do? put it in the usb port then how do you sign up?

You need broadband, you don't NEED a router.
