View Full Version : Everybody Loves Raven

Or so it seems. But why is that? I don't see what's so special about him. His mic skills I believe are sorely overrated, and in the ring, he doesn't really do anything too spectacuar.

I'm not saying I hate him. I think I remember liking one match he had with Chris Jericho for the Television title in WCW at Halloween Havoc '98. But really...I don't see why so many people seem to love him.

Can somebody help open my eyes here?

I concur.

I woundn't say I love Raven but I do like him.

Is it just me or would it be great is Raven came back to the WWE?

Well, I know I personally enjoy the Raven character almost as much as Scott Levy. Infact my enjoyment of him is one in the same I suppose. The Raven character, including all it's evolution from the ECW days to now has been one of the most sensical and intreging character developments of all time. I can't think of anyone else that has actually made an entire successful career off of their gimmick. His work as Raven is classic. His promos are like no one else's. His style of fighting is like a traditional wrestlers. There is just something about him that is different then anyone else. And I think that is in large part due to Scott Levy's genius. His brillience to evolve the character while always keeping it true to it's core and nature is what makes him so enduring. Example, Steve Austin was great when he was anti-athority...but he went around for a year hugging McMahon. The Rock's character has changed over time from blue-chipper to black panther, to ego, to sell out, to people's champ, to movie star...it's a great character but the core of it changes. Same with someone even like Ric Flair...from being the man becuase of the Gold around his waist, to a grizzled vetern, to "company owner", top mentor, etc...

Raven has always been the loner (even with his flock) who is really just filled with spite for everyone. Yet not so one sided as to always have goals in mind, and ruthless to get them. It is because of how much Scott Levy has poured into the Raven character that it is so special. I don't think anyone is going to say he is even in the top 50 of wrestlers as far as moves execution, but his in ring psych is wonderful. Raven is without question one of my top 25 wrestlers of all time.

Well, The One, I guess you don't recall a time in WCW where they ran an angle that revealed that Raven's parents were rich or whatever, and he acted like a pussified bitch face.

Nope. Don't recall. Didn't watch much of WCW. Had no idea. Now feel dumb. Prepared to kill myself. Good-bye depressing world.

I don't know what it is about Raven. I have a stigma against the guy I guess. I try so hard to like him, and he really doesn't appeal to me the way his idol (Jake Roberts, in case you missed it ;)) did, for an example.

Probably because he was also JOHNNY FUCKIN' POLO!! :shifty:

The guy knows so much about wrestling it is ridiculous. I just watched his Secrets of the Ring vol. 4 where he talks about being a heel. Great pick up for anyone interested in knowing the details about heelism, from the selling to "showing your ass" (metaphorically...and if you're Flair literally)

I'm a huge mark because I've followed his career since literally the beginning. He broke in to the biz in Portland Wrestling back in the late '80s.

The reason most people probably like Raven is because he's a great talker, great worker, has a great personality and can bring some humor.

I don't think I have to back up the great talker part of my argument. I'll just back up the other 3.

Great personality - I've never heard a negative thing said about him. Everybody seems to love the guy. From CM Punk to DDP, from Sabu to Terry Taylor.

Humor - Just listen to the guy do commentary on his TNA DVD.

Worker - He's won a title everywhere he's been. He even won an NWA territory World title not even two years after he debuted. Promoters didn't do that alot back then unless you could bring it.

I don't think Raven is the great character he once was - he used to be awesome in many areas, and was one of WCW's most over guys.

Anybody remember the series of vignettes they did with Raven and Kanyon at his parents mansion, when Kanyon did a massive flip bump into the swimming pool off a one handed push to the back. Greatness...

Yeah, that was during the stint I mentioned earlier to The One.

NOW, somebody up there said they don't have to defend that he's a great talker...but personally, I don't really see THAT either. Sure he has a nice vocabulary, but most of the time, it sounds to me like he's trying too hard (kinda like Monty Brown).

Big words is gooder.

Despite the fact that Levy is an intellectual, he comes off as a total pseudointellectual faking his way through it. He's overdramatic enough that he probably could have teamed with the Undertaker in the 90s or feuded with Hogan in the 80s.

I eagerly await his feud with Mordecai when he sinks to TNA.

Personally, I've always got time for Raven as he's one of the few good characters left in wrestling. In a time when everyone wrestles under their given name and genuinely entertaining gimmicks are so far and few between (Chris Masters... well he's a guy with big muscles and that's about it and Randy Orton... um, he's third generation... anything else?) Raven sticks out.

Meh, Raven's the man. I honestly can't put my finger on it, but I've liked him for his entire stint as Raven. I don't so much like most of what he's done in TNA, but whatever, I guess.

I used to like Raven, but I find him in TNA to just be going through the motions. He just doesn't seem to really care about what he is doing. That's what it seems like anyway

Also ABT, Monty is the man.

LOL YES

I remember Kanyon was there after Raven became so depressed he just sat at home all day or something.

Pure WCW magic there.

Well, Hulk and Taker have lasted the pace and done very well for themselves on the basis of their gimmicks. And one could argue that Scotty has kept his job for so long because of his... even if it just serves to get pops from the kids in the audience.

Funny story about Raven:

My friend announced an indy show just over a year ago. Raven main evented the show. Before the match, Raven told my friend to mention that he'll be signing autographed pictures after the show.

That was kind of disappointing to hear.

I have noticed that everybody loves Raven. Does anyone know why? He hasn't impressed me since he left WWE and I still like him. WHY?

Raven was the shit in ECW, but just another poorly used charcter in the WWE. Much like all of the potential talent thats gone down the drain (TNA)
