Stole this from Rajah....
I just saw this in my new issue of Game Informer. It looks immense as it will have every MK character ever in the game (the official roster was around 60 it said) .
There were a couple of characters I never remember seeing before in a MK game before one being Blaze or something like that looks like it was supposed to be some kind of fire monster or something.
Also, the air attacks are coming back like they were in the 2D games which is cool I guess.
Anyway it's supposed to be the last MK game of this generation and is set to be released this October on both X-Box and PS2.
Sounds interesting.

60 playable characters in a fighting game? Unheard of. But according to the latest issue of Game Informer, Midway plans to exit the current generation stage on a high note. Mortal Kombat Armageddon will feature "all the characters from Mortal Kombat fighting history," with the possible exception of Motaro. And if that's not enough, players can tinker with the new Create a Kombatant mode.
In addition, Armageddon will feature a revamped fatality system, mid-air combos, direction-controlled throws, and a Konquest mode based on the Shaolin Monks engine. Armageddon strikes in October for the PS2 and Xbox.

Goro was the sub boss in MK 1. He is the prince of his race (the name escapes me.
Kintaro was the sub boss of MK 2. He had tiger stripes on his back for some reason and was basically a bigger badder version of Goro.
Sheeva was working for Shao Khan in MK 3. Shee hated Motaro because their races are natural enemies (cat and dog style).

Goro had a new moveset in Deception. He could use that, while they give Kintaro something different. Or they could pair them up Noob/Smoke style.

I'm not looking forward to this MK. I think that the 3D MK's are to repetitive. In Deadly Aliance all you had to do to win was 3 punches in a row, use your weapon, do 3 more punches and then use your weapon.
It sucked even more when whoever you were playing against was Sektor or Cyrax. All they would do was use the weapon where a rocket or a circular saw would come out their chest, all through the fight. The CPU even did it.:|
I'm just gonna stick to the classics.:D

Selected bits from a Q&A with Ed Boon over at <a href="http://ps2.ign.com/articles/691/691413p1.html">IGN</a>
IGN: Mortal Kombat: Armageddon has the biggest roster of the series ever, which means we have, what, 30-plus characters? In what context do all these characters coming together make sense from a story standpoint?
Ed: The roster is a lot bigger than 30 characters. It's actually a lot closer to 60 characters. Since the story really ties up all the loose ends from Mortal Kombat 1 all the way to Deception, we want to include everyone. Plus, since this final chapter is all about the final epic battle we need to explain what happens to EVERYONE, which means leaving no stone unturned
IGN: Also, from a technical standpoint, are there any complications or difficulties you had to overcome to get all of these characters to fight one another? Do different character sizes or fighting styles make a difference from a design or programming standpoint?
Ed: Absolutely. We are going to be including all the boss characters from MK's past. Goro, Shao Kahn, even Motaro!! Some of these characters are HUGE and have never been playable characters before. So we will need to make sure they are not too powerful or un-fun to play. We are doing extensive testing on them against every single other character in the game to make sure they are fair and fun to play.
IGN: What create-a-player modes have you seen in previous games that you've liked? And which one did you base Mortal Kombat: Armageddon on, if any? How exactly does it work? Can you explain how the feature is robust and deep?
Ed: There have been a number of create-a-character modes in various wrestling, boxing and golf games. They all have the standard "dress-your-fighter" functionality with a number of different costume items to select. We really didn't base MK on of any particular one but we did a good amount of research and wanted to make sure we did more than they did. For example, we thought it was important to let players define their attacks as well as the look of their fighters. Armageddon lets you define your fighting styles, right down to the attack associated with each button. Another thing we knew was important was to let players take their created fighter and go online against other created fighters. This is one of the most exciting features of our create-a-fighter mode.
IGN: Fatalities have always been a significant part of the Mortal Kombat phenomenon. What kinds of new fatalities will we see in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, and can you explain how players can create their own new fatalities?
Ed: Our goal with the fatality system is to make it as interactive as possible. In all the previous MK games fatalities were triggered and then both players would just sit back and "watch the fireworks". With each new MK game we added more elaborate fatality sequences, but they've always been non-interactive. With our new Fatality system players will be stringing together "mini-fatalities" (in whatever order they want) to form their own "custom fatality". Each character will have a larger number of "mini-fatality" moves that will each require a button sequence to trigger. Players can decide which fatalities they want to string together to form their own custom fatality. The challenge will be that every "mini-fatality" will require a faster button sequence than the previous. So really good players will be able to string together longer fatalities and customize them as long as they are fast enough to enter the button sequence for each step.

IGN: What do you mean by "Armageddon?" Is this really the final battle between good and evil? Does this mean this is the last Mortal Kombat as we know it? Will you explain?
Ed: Armageddon does imply "The End" in a few ways. It is the end of MK on this generation of consoles. It also is the final battle between all the good and evil characters in the MK universe. We really want to close this chapter of Mortal Kombat.

It may come as a shock to Mortal Kombat fans to hear that creator Ed Boon has recently referred to the latest installment, Armageddon, as the end of the series. But luckily he's talking about the series in only its current state; we can assume Mortal Kombat will evolve in some significant way as it moves to next-gen platforms.

May 11, 2006 - Day 2 at E3 is always a little less crazy than the first couple of days, so we're able to check out some more titles at a slower pace, which is good, because we're able to soak in everything better. So we headed off to Midway to check out a couple of games, including the last Mortal Kombat game on the PS2, Armageddon.
The finale is shaping up to be a huge and expansive title that looks to surpass everything that Midway has done in the past. For starters, there will be over 60 characters in this game, and that makes up the entire roster for the whole series, including such monsters as Goro, Kintaro and Motaro. Classic characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero are in the game too.
Armaggedon changes the gameplay up a little bit compared to Deadly Alliance and Deception. Instead of three fighting styles per character, that number has been narrowed down to two, in order to keep everything tighter and balanced. For the most part, one style is a hand-to-hand art while the other is a weapon-based style. Even the four-armed wonders have weapons too. Don't worry about balance problems though, because Midway has promised that the reduction in fighting styles will prove to make the game more balanced.
Environmental traps and fatalities are still in the game, but one new thing that's been added are aerial raves (air combos). Certain attacks will now launch your opponent high into the air, and you can now follow them and throw in another combo in the air for more damage. The combos that you can pull off are either preset combos, or you can easily cancel one combo and go into another. The other big thing -- and this will delight fans of gore -- is the ability to custom create your own fatality on the fly. Yes, the preset fatalities are stil intact, but instead of doing that, you can perform up to five attacks to deal your own version of death. The way the custom fatality works is that you'll have a timer for each part of your fatality, with the timer counting down faster and faster as you add more moves. Once the coup de grace has been executed, you'll be grade on your , ahem, performance.
Aside from the fighting, there have been major revisions to the Konquest mode. Taking some inspiration from Midway's own Shaolin Monks, the beat-em-up action is much better than before, with huge, chaining combos now possible. There are also environmental traps in Konquest, but there will be a lot of checkpoints so that you can easily restart your game. Encountering a major character in Konquest will put you in a 1 on 1 fight, like in the main game.
Finally, customization will play a big part in the game. You can now create your own kombatant, right down to the color of their eyes. You can even mix and match threads that the classic MK characters wear. Ever wanted a Scorpion with Kano's metal head and Sub-Zero's ice-infested arms? It's all possible with the new create a kombatant mode. After creating your fighter, you can assign regular and special moves, and then use these fighters both offline and online. Midway assures us that balance issues are going to be dealt with, so that players cannot overpower their character. Hopefully they're right, and we don't see legions of overpowered dummies hanging out online.
Speaking of online, there will be improvements on how you ca arrange matches, although Midway reps were hesitant to say what exactly they had in mind. Since the Xbox has a better infrastructure when it comes to online play, Midway reps said they were thinking of adding more features to the Xbox version, such as ranked ladders and whatnot. However, this is totally unconfirmed at the moment.
With an expected shipping date of October, Midway is pulling all stops to ensure that Armageddon is the biggest and best entry into the series yet. Our only concern lies with the balancing of the characters, which is always a big issue when it comes to fighting games. Look for more information soon!

Damn, all those characters. Great costumes, too. I don't mind the fighting engine being simplistic for what I'm getting. Having Goro, Kintaro, and Motaro in one game is worth $50 by itself. Then there's character creation, and online play (Deception was the smoothest XBLive experience I ever had). It's gonna be the goods.
We haven't had a gaming season this good since 2004.

From what I get from the vid, "Sticks and Stones", the Create A Fatality is just pushing a certain button and getting 1 part of the fatality, like ripping off an arm, then pushing another button to get another part of it, like ripping a heart out, and trying to keep a string of different parts of the fatality going by pushing different buttons. This is available to all the combatants so there will be no pre-set fatalities I guess.

Review for the PS2 version of the game (out by morning) is up on IGN. Long story short:
-Kart Racing isn't that fun (according to writer)
-Konquest Mode is short, though educational
-The fighting is improved with little touches like air kombat and a streamlined interface (one hand2hand style and weapon style, added parry move, arial raves)
-Karacter endings are blah (no real cutscenes or even static art, just VO?!?)
-Karacter Kreation fuckin rules
XB version comes out next week. That is all.

Next week XB have MKA.
After some play time I must say, this is the Mortal Kombat to have. Me and my bud seen the character select screen and just sat there talking about all the people in the game for like 15mins. We marked out like school girls for Chameleon, and his interesting new design.
The fighting is still stiff, but not as stiff as before. The additions of air-kombat and parries makes the game move at a fast pace and look pretty frantic. Get a group of your guys together and set the rounds to one a fight and let the good times roll.
Speaking of rolling, we didn't even get to try the Kart Racing. Yeah, I'm stupid; I'll try for it today.
Kreating a Karacter is pretty cool. You have to buy just about everything worth a damn but the game literally hands you money for just about everything you do (even for in-fight combos). A little play session with your profile will easily hand you alot of coins. The items you can dress your kombatant with range from fashionable to downright ugly (in a good way). They have costume pieces from older games like classic ninja garb (called MK 1 Ninja though the fabric is actually from part 2). Really cool.

I was pissed at first about the lack of unique fatalities as well, but KAF is actually pretty fun.
Some observations:
-Motor Kombat is a fun little diversion
-It's a damn shame there's only one slot per profile for Kreate a Fighter, cuz there is a lot of cool stuff in there.
-Aerial Kombat is fun, but there's only a few moves shared between all the characters.
-Endings suck. Just the character doing a series of moves atop the pyramid from the opening movie while a voiceover goes.

I've been thinking about getting this game because I need a game, besides wrestling, where I can beat the shit out of something.
The only MK game I got on PS2 is Deception. I loved the Konquest cause I was some dude and I could go around and punch the shit out of a random person and they would die. Didn't get too deeply far into the game though :( My MK experiences were really only for Sega and N64.

I picked this up yesterday as well. Here are the things I picked up while playing.
I see they only have one fighting style and one weapon style for most of the fighters. A slight few only have double fighting styles.
Kreate a Fatality sucks. I'm better off with the in level traps.
Surprisingly, no fight training for Taven for Konquest mode. I could use some pointers.
Haven't gotten around to Kart mode yet.
Kreate a Kombatant is like what Triad said. Really awesome but you gotta buy alot of stuff. You pick up a few things here and there during Konquest.

Yeah, tbh this is more like Ultimate MK Deception than a true sequel.
Lots of reused stuff, a bare-bones story, no endings besides text. Seems like they almost phined this in.
The Kreate a fighter ALMOST makes up for this. ALMOST. If the gameplay was better it would. But sadly, no. I'll get to that later. But there are a TON of different parts for creating other videogame, comic book, and other pop culture characters in here, alomg with retro mk character parts. They even have LOD's shoulder pads, ffs.
Konquest mode has me very interested so far. Much better than Deception's. Thats all I have to say about that. Bubba Gump.
Extras are decent. Kart racing doesn't look all that great. Would have prefered expanded versions of chess and puzzle kombat.
Now the gameplay. My problem with Mortal Kombat has always been that beyond the special moves and fatality's there isn't much difference between the charactere. And although this new generation tries to improve on that with different fighting styles, no one's style of play is noticably different from eachother outside of the larger characters like Goro and Khan. And with 64 characters even the special moves are just cosmeticly different. Thats the tough part about having such a huge roster. This wouldn't be as big a problem if the fighting flowed a bit better. But everything feels very robotic. You are just memorizing button combinations instead of trying to master the style the character uses.
I hope for the next generation they really revamp the engine. Take an example from Tekken. That series is great because the characters are so radically different. Sure there are a few repeats here and there, but even those characters are different enough that you have to take a good amount of time to master them individually.
This is still worth a rental if you're a fighting game fan, and if you're a mortal kombat fan like me, overall, these things wont get to you that much. I'm just making them known here because they'd probably bother other people more than they do me.

I'll never expect an MK game to have the depth of Tekken. Ever. I'm utterly unconvinced that anybody not Asian can make fighting games like that. It sound partially ignorant but look what we have to work with. Clay Fighter? Tao Feng?

I made Jason Voorhees for shit's and giggles.
His fighting style is Voorheedo and he fights with the Machete.

How could you possibly like the Konquest mode in this game? It's so lousy. Taven is an uninspired, generic character..it's too linear..Taven sucks...you can't jump..Taven rhymes with Maven, who sucks..and it's boring.
As far as an actual fighting game, people stopped taking Mortal Kombat seriously years ago, now it's just for fun. And that's what it is meant to be--mindless fun to waste hours with.
That said, if anyone wants to play..my PS2 online name is Vega or V3GA, depending on if I want to use my Human Smoke created character to my other one.

I got weapon fatalities to work you have to put in the take out weapon combo after you do at least one other fatality combo.

I have some spoilers for the endings, but I can honestly say that one of the MK Universe's best characters (Sub-Zero) has the worst ending (thus far), and one of the MK Universe's WORST characters (Stryker) actually has a cool ending.
Gist of the Voiceovers...
Sub-Zero: He becomes an Ice-God. The Elder Gods, however, didn't give him the authority to make him a god, so they send their champions out to destroy him.
Stryker: The explosion of Blaze burns away his original concept of justice. He decides to seek truth and justice on his own terms. He becomes a Vigilante and hides away for a while to prepare for it. In other words, he becomes Frank Castle.

How can you complain about Sub-Zero becoming a god? I think it's an awesome ending for him, and sets him up in a way to be majorly important in the next generation of MK.
Also, how can you say Stryker becoming a bootleg Punisher is a cool thing?

I wasn't complaining about Sub-Zero becoming a god. I was complaining about how He allegedly wasn't giving the authority to become one by the Elder Gods. I thought that was the fucking point of the whole god damned tournament. First to get to and defeat Blaze gets the power of a God. It doesn't say "First to get to and defeat Blaze, if they have the permission of the Elder Gods, gets the power of a God."
Also a bootleg punisher is better than what he is currently, a riot cop with no personality. Though I'll admit to laughing about how I beat Blaze with him (Machine Gun)
In any event, Ermac's or Noob's ending are the coolest thus far. Ermac becomes an army. Noob and Sub-Zero fuse into something different.
Besides, I think the official Canon for MK: Armageddon is Taven winning.

ROFL, Jack Thompson sent a cease and desist letter to Midway, saying "Mortal Kombat: Armageddon contains an unauthorized commercial exploitation of my name, photograph, image, and likeness within the game".
He saw a pic of a Jack Thompson Kreate A Kharacter and thought he was actually in the game :|

Quick Question here - Shinnok's Spire:
Does anyone know how to beat Shinnok's Spire? (it's the level where there are three demon dudes, and they keep creating henchmen). The three demon guys keep shooting stuff at you.
I am stuck here. :foc:
I am literally pounding the shit out of everyone, but no one's energy seems to get drained. :'(
