View Full Version : Should WWE bring back the King of the Ring?

The King of the Ring was the best event the WWE had for putting over new talents as main eventers in the eyes of fans. With the brand split, the WWE has decided to just drop the concept as it would be a fifth dual brand PPV and somewhat dificult to manage on the dual brands. I'm curious to know what everyone else thinks. Is it time for a return of the KotR?

I think it would be a great co-brand PPV to be honest. They should bring it back.

Yes they should definately bring it back. I would make a seperate Raw and a separate Smackdown tounrmaent and the winners of their respective brands would face off to fight for the King of the Ring Crown

I would love to see it, but is so obsoluete now. If rey rey wont the rumble and there screwing him over (2nd biggest PPV of the year, says something) hen what good would a KOTR be? Have RVD win it just to be stepped on by masters and say masters beat this years KOTR winner? no thanks

I would love to see the King of the Ring come back. Have it take place in June (I think the WWE is planning on adding more PPVs anyway), and have the winner face the World Champion of his choice at Summerslam.

Another idea for a prize could be the right to appear on both RAW and SmackDown!. It gets the guy more exposure.

I would love to see it back as a Raw-Smackdown hybid ppv. This ppv is a springboard for the new comers giving them a chance to show off their in ring capabilities.

FUCK YEAH
But do the shit right
Have the entire tournament take place on one night, none of this bullshit where only the finals are on that night, it takes away from KOTR, and to be honest, makes it kinda pointless

Yes. It was a great concept and a great opportunity to springboard new stars.
I would have it co-brand as well.

Until Vince decides to have all Raw wrestlers win in the first round, because that is the superior brand. :shifty:

And whats wrong with doing something out of the norm? Every year its the same thing, a guy wins the rumble, then he wins title at Mania. Do you have a problem with something fresh?

Here's how I'd like to see it...
Make it a co-brand ppv. Have Raw host their own KOTR matches, SmackDown has theirs, and then have Raw VS SmackDown on it. Winner becomes the king of the ring, and they'll trump it as how much honor it brings to the brand.
Maybe allow the winner to get a title shot, turn it into a story line because some dude wants to prove their worth to their GM, do it between the Royal Rumble and No Way Out so when Raw doesn't win the Rumble they can name their number one contender at a PPV, set up an extra Raw VS SmackDown match before Mania... It has potential.

I can't remember exactly how many participants there usually were in the KotR tournament, but they could practically involve the whole roster in it. First round matches could be run at house shows to increase interest and attendance. Final 16 matches could run on tv. Two from both brands could advance to semi-finals and eventually finals on the PPV itself. And those final four would really be in the spotlight, having fought their way through all the previous rounds. The winner could get a title shot...but it probably wouldn't be for the best. If they get booked to lose, then all the buildup for that character is gone. If they get booked to win, there's the danger of being a flash in the pan. The winner should just move on to some more establishing fueds, to raise their star to a more permanent position.
And here's another idea. Why only run the KotR for singles wrestlers? A small tag team tournament culminating at the KotR would put the spotlight on a tag team as well. Alas, tag wrestling doesn't mean much to the WWE these days.
the WWE wasn't happy with brock being the youngest WWE champion, so I don't understand how they would let him be the last king of the ring. I think it'll come back some day.

When it involves someone who deserves it getting shit on and screwd over from it to a guy who is clearly not ready to headline Mania and is getting heat from a deceased, legendary wrestler that everyone, including said Rumble winner, loved with a passion, yeah, there's a HUGE problem.

Honestly, I never thought King of the Ring should've gone. I liked it when the WWE kept up with their rituals.
Royal Rumble = 30 man over-the-top-rope action
King of the Ring = 8 men in a one night only tournament
Survivor Series = Eight Man/Ten Man Elimination Tag Team Matches, EVERY year, and not just when the WWE feels like bringing it out.
