Yeah I was watching a few more Firefly episodes today and I did'nt really think about it until now.

At different times when one of the crew is mad they start speaking words in some foreign language or something. Just a few words or a phrase from time to time and that's all.

Anyone know what language it is or was it even revealed?

It's chinese. The US and China were the only "superpowers" left before the war or something. And they joined forces, thus combining the languages. Anybody growing up after that time learned both languages.

Something like I think. Loopy can prolly explain it better. Haven't seen the show in a while.

Also, the swearing is in Chinese. It was Joss' way of getting past the TV censors.

I just watched serenity the other week and started watching all the the first 10 or so episodes of firefly. Awesome series.

I also just wanted to ask that I know the film company that released serenity said if the movie makes a certain amount of money ( I forgot the figure but they did release ) than a sequel will be made. Did serenity make that figure?

I never read that but whatever that figure was I doubt it made it at the box office, modest returns at best. Should sell pretty well on DVD though so who knows.

December 1, 2005 - IGN FilmForce has heard that, although it was very disappointed in the poor box office showing for Serenity, Universal may not have retired Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his renegade crew just yet.

Sources said that, given the strong sales of the TV series Firefly on DVD, Universal is planning a sequel film to Serenity that will be produced with and to broadcast premiere on the Sci Fi Channel, which is part of the NBC Universal family.

The project is said to be a lower budget undertaking streamlined for the small-screen.

IGN FilmForce checked with Joss Whedon's camp who denied the claim; Universal did not comment.

Time will tell if this rumor pans out.

A little old but all I could find on the subject right now.

What Boondock said about Chinese is true.

Joss said on one of the commentaries or documentaries or something that he thought it would be interesting if anyone - no matter their cultural status or age or whatever - was bilingual.

We see in River's flashbacks in Serenity that the Chinese language was a huge part of their education.

BTW, here's the translation of all of the Chinese from the movie:
===

[When the teacher interrupts the kid talking about Reavers.]

"BAI-tuo, AN-jing-eedyen!"
"We will enjoy your silence now!"

[The teacher's response after River says "We meddle."]

"Shuh-MUH?"
"I'm sorry?"

[The end of Mal's quote that starts "So here's us on the raggedy edge."]

"DONG-luh-MAH?"
"Are we clear here?"

[After Zoe tells Wash that there are Reavers chasing them.]

"Ai-yah. Tyen-ah..."
"Merciless hell..."

[After Simon punches Mal.]

"Nee TZAO ss-MA? Nee-YOW wuh-KAI CHANG?"
"You wanna bullet? You wanna bullet right in your throat?"

[Before Jayne goes into River's storage locker.]

"Go HWONG-TONG."
"Enough of this nonsense."

[What Inara is muttering while Mal is telling the crew to turn the ship into a mock Reaver ship.]

"RUNtse de FWOtzoo, ching baoYO wuomun..."
"Oh merciful Buddha protect us..."

[While everyone is yelling over each other about the Reaver plan, Wash is yelling...]

"Juhguh JEE HUA jun kuhPAH!"
"There's nothing about this plan that isn't horrific!"

[What River is saying as she's flipping out on Miranda:]

"RUNtse duh SHANG-DEE, ching DAIwuhtzo."
"Merciful God please take me away."

"WUOshang mayer, maysheen, BYEN shr-to."
"I will close my ears and my heart and I will be a stone."

That's from "The Official Visual Companion" to the movie. Very cool book, has a complete copy of the shooting script in the back. There's actually a brief bit before the Fanty & Mingo scene where Zoe gets propositioned in Chinese, and Wash has a pretty clever one-liner.

MAN: PEOW-liang de shaojie, Booleetah, GOOwo... (Pretty lady, forget him and hire me...)

WASH: Wo TAI-TAI boo PEOW-liang! (My wife is not pretty!)

I was very surprised at Serenity. I thought that I wouldn't become hooked on the movie, but I watched it and thought "why the FUCK didn't more people watch this Firefly show or this movie". I think America is on drugs or something.

The girl who played River was fucking HOT, too. The things I would do to bang her would not be appropriate to say even for here.

Oh, and a completly unrelated note, Mac, I know you like Larry Johnson, and that's the reason for your sig having a cool pic of him and all, but I have to ask: Why the hell are there two Bud Ice cans sitting on each side of his pic? Strikes me as odd, that's all.

Theres a Firefly companion as well, which is basically a load of essays written by various people including Jewel Staite who plays Kaylee. I mention this because it has every bit of Chinese from the series translated.

Sci Fi actually optioned more epsiodes of the series.

DVD sales were what brought back Family Guy (And a couple other series have been saved because of them), so the fact that they're going to be doing a Sci Fi movie might be a positive sign.

I still need to get the series on disc. The movie more or less sold me, even though I never got into the series before that.

I'm Glad there's enough of the cast left to keep going. Given the way a lot of people talked about the movie before it came out, I thought it was going to be, like, a near total kill-off. Always a bad way to leave your options over.

Y'know, I've never seen any episodes of Firefly. I loved Buffy and Angel, but I've never seen Firefly. No good reason why.

If you haven't seen the series I can understand how it can seem that way.

If I hand't seen the series before seeing Serenity who knows how my opinion would have changed.
