View Full Version : The major problem with John Cena (RAW Spoilers)
On tonight's edition of RAW, John Cena was heavily booed at the MCI Center in Washington DC during his segment with Triple H. This makes him and the WWE Championship look very bad. How are they going to main event the biggest show of the year when John Cena can't even get a face pop anymore?
Discuss.

The major problem with John Cena is that he is an utterly vanilla babyface who can't wrestle very well.

Naw.
The biggest problem with Cena was they made him cartoonish, and they played him out wrong. We didn't choose to like him, the writing team decided we HAD to like him. That's why everyone he feuded with either got the same reaction or cheered out.
It'll happen against Hunter too, if the WWE doesn't realize they need to tone down Cena's gimmick. Make him more of a normal person, give us a reason to like him. Also, quit trying to make him like a new-age Stone Cold...

At WM, it's going to be very simple.....
HHH will get one of the loudest pops of the night and cena will get boo'ed out of the building.

Nothing can be done short term for Mania, it's going to be a big mess.
However, if they let Cean be more like Cena 18 months ago, he might have a chance to get over again

For some reason, I don't take satisfaction in Triple H being cheered over Cena. I'd much rather see Chicago shit all over the match chanting "Boring" and doing the Mexican wave. That would be glorious. The WWE is foolish if they put this match on last.
I think the match could get some energy heading into it, though. At Saturda Night's Main Event, have the 2-on-3 Handicap Tag Team Match be for the Headlinging position at WrestleMania. So if John Cena & Triple H win, the WWE Championship Match goes on last. If Angle, Orton & Mysterio win, the Triple Threat goes on last.
Towards the end of the match, have Cena get his chain, and knock the shit out of Triple H, leaving him for a 3-on-1 beat-down. Mysterio gets the pin on Triple H, and that is that. SmackDown! gets top billing, Cena gets some momentum against Triple H, and we have some edge to Cena's character. It MIGHT work.

They boo him cuz he lost his edge. He was mad over when he was the "don't give a shit" rapper who insulted his oppoents without relying on poop or gay jokes. Now? He's worse than a wigger.

the problem with John Cena is that he's not Steve Austin...
he lacks that Charisma and Bad Ass Face charm...
not to mention that his wrestling skills are shabby... it's part of his gimmick now?
all in all, it's a shit character portrayed by a shit actor,
that was created out of shit writing.

People constantly say John Cena is a shit wrestler. I disagree. Cena is an excellent wrestler, but the WWE doesn't let him do that. They try and put him over as a "street fighter", which is not like John Cena at all. His punches look weak as Hell.
I really believe Cena will be a top guy for years to come, but I think it will more likely than not be as a heel, and one that wrestles his opponents. The whole rapper gimmick was designed to get Cena noticed, and it was continued from a one night stint because it worked. It's not working now, so drop the gimmick and have Cena be Cena.

Pintsize is cool. St.Jimmy, maybe not so much ;)
Nah, I digress, we don't share opinions, but I won't hold it against him yet.
Cena isn't a shit wrestler. Nor is he shit on the mic. He's being restricted. He didn't get where he is by being shit. He impressed people, the right people, including the fans. The problem now is that WWE wants him to be something that isn't working, and instead of admitting it, they are determined to shove it down everyone's throat. This is the same thing that happened with Kurt Angle and Randy Orton early in their careers. The fans couldn't stand WWE trying to force them as faces down their throat. When WWE wised up and turned them, they were huge.

What he said.
I have a feeling that BEFORE Mania Hunter will be face, whether Vince wants it or not. He may be making the next Stone Cold-esq "we'll cheer you as long as you're facing Cena" thing, which could potentially turn Hunter into a mega face.

I agree, this is the kind of cena that got over in the first place, not the bland babyface that he is now.
He will have to turn heel after Mania, then watch the cheers roll in when he is playing the character that seems most natural to him, it exactly the same as the rock's situation of 2003 except rock is the better wrestler.

Is Cena still a "rapper"? I haven't seen him rap in a long time. That and his look got him over, that is all.

Correct. Cena isn't really being booed for anything he's done recently. But kissing the ass of the crowd on a nightly basis for a whole year, using phrases like "cheap sauce" and "ham sandwich" to insult opponents, showing a music video every soccer mom around the world would be proud of, and so on (all the while being touted as a badass rebellious rapper thug, no less), can go a long way in ruining a wrestler's credibility. The fact he isn't very good in the ring is just icing on the cake.
What I'd like to know, is how on EARTH the writers NEVER saw this coming?! Many of us saw this backlash coming the day he introduced the term "chain gang", and saw he was clearly on the decline when they had to tone down his act in 2004. I know the writers get a lot of flak from us for being complete idiots, and deservedly so, but are they really as stupid and shortsighted as we make them out to be? Makes me weep for the future of this company...
The truly saddening part about all of this though is when you think back to 2003, how great Cena's character was and how over he was. They had something big in their hands. It genuinely felt like he could be the next great big thing in the company.
One nipple slip at a Superbowl and two years later, and John Cena's career has been utterly sabotaged. I used to be a huge fan, now I couldn't hate him more. Such a freaking shame... :nono:

easy. Turn him heel the day after Mania. When he loses the title, he can go crazy or bitter, rip on the fans, even his own CHain Gang, and then have a rematch against Triple HHH at Backlash

They won't do it. They need faces, and Cena's merchandise draws in too much.

I hate that fucking excuse. Great job selling all that merchandise WWE, I hope it was worth ruining a career and sabotaging your own product.

Uhhhhh...John Cena's merch continues to sell very well. I'm not sure if you know this or not but more money is made on merch then on ticket sales. So if WWE is getting a lot of sales based of a failing Champion...then it doesn't matter what the ticket sales do or ratings are...Vince McMahon is in the business to make money, not to do good by pro wrestling fans. Hell, when was the last time you even heard someone on WWE's prgramming say the words "Pro Wrestling"? WWE is now in the selling pop culture market. Accept that.

And that's the other reason why he's hated so much, this is the only reason why he's the champ. It has nothing to do with ability. But I don't see how turning Cena heel would make a difference to him selling merchandise, HHH would sell a lot more than Cena I think.

Triple H is going to carry him like everyone else does, so I woulden't expect a boring match. Triple H never dissapoints at WM.

We did choose to like him. Remember when he was mad over?
We chose to like him, and WWE said "that's not the way wrestling works," Delivering an unintentional "fuck you" (Not to be confused with the F-U) to the fans.
For some reason, the lessons of the Steve Austin/DX era have been lost on them. Imagine if Stone Cold had come out and started making jokes about Vince pooping himself (Actually, he made similar comments, but they were pretty limited to a situation where he actually might've pissed himself), or DX sucked up to the fans instead of simply telling off the boss.
Can you imagine Vince saying "If they like DX now, they'll love them as babyfaces!" Because I can, and it's what made DX suck. That and X-Pac ending up being the only member. But that was after their popularity kinda wore out anyway.
So Vince had this guy with a great gimmick: He was sorta Eminem meets Austin. They went and turned him into ICP. What. The. Fuck.

One thing that pisses me off about WWE is when they have a badass character that gets over with the fans because he doesn't give a shit, but then gets watered down once he has the Title because of their concern for public image or whatever. Remember Big Daddy Cool. He went from being a total badass, to playing MTV Rock & Jock softball once he was the champ. It all comes down to $$$ and what image WWE believes will get more accepted by the masses and sell more merchandise. It's bullshit.
