Since I've got a working PS2, I want some good RPGs with a decent playtime. I just picked up GRandia II (Never played it before, only playd Grandia Xtreme, but the combat engine rocks) on the cheap, looking for some more for later. They can be old as I don't have many for my PS2 anyway.

Ground rules:

No Tales of X, or Star Ocean like games. I don't like button mashers or real time RPG engines.
No Final Fantasy Games. I haven't liked any of the PS2 content for them.
PReferably RPGs that aren't short, unless they have some good replay value or a lot of sidequests.Merci

I dislike most RPGs, but I love Dragon Quest 8.

Suikoden 3. Also, if you kind find it cheap (unlikely, tho) get Suikoden 2 for PS1

Suikoden 5... Yeah.....

Granted, I haven't played it, I have high hopes.
Basically what everyone else has said.

You MIGHT like Shadow Hearts 2. I really liked it. I don't know if it falls into your "real time" system though, as it's turnbased, but attacking takes timing (Stopping a bar on a ring. Sort of hard to explain.) It's a really good game though. Shadow Hearts 3 just came out.

Ugh, I dunno, Nocturne turned me off to the DDS series.

However, Persona 3 should rock.

Doesn't need to be recent. Especially if I can get good games used for cheap. ;) Currently, My PS2 RPGs are as follow:

FFX
Grandia XTreme
Xenosaga: Der Will Zur Macht
Star Ocean (I was told it was a turn based system merged with real time. I was disappointed)
Grandia II.I haven't had a lot of RPGs since PS1 and GBA were the predominant systems. I usually prefer my RPGs to be portable, but DS doesn't have any good ones yet.

(Thanks for mentioning XS, Fryza, I done forgot it)

Shit, I have XenoSaga 1, I forgot to put that on my list. Haven't gotten that far in yet, but it seems cool. I got it free with my PS2

What's Jade Cocoon? I've never seen the name before.

Well Suikoden 1-3 are by no means "recent" games, but you can expect to pay 50+ Dollars for them since they are so rare and hard to come by :o

I dunno, most rpg's I like are really old, rare, and hard to find.

You'd probaly like Diseaga(think that's how it's spelled). Plays like FF: Tatics, bout a year old, might be able to find it used.

I dunno what two is like, since I only played the first one on PS1, been wanting to find the sequel.

The story (from one) is monsters have been over-running your city, and they're all set out by some weird God-like being. You have to go and defeat him, using monsters you capture.

The fun thing was the ability to combine the monsters to create new ones. They had various element properties to them and such. The first one was a little short, dunno about the second one.

Definite thumbs up to Dragon Quest 8. I can see why this series is bigger in Japan than Final Fantasy is.

Xenosaga episode II went in the wrong direction compared to the first one, imo. I played all the way through the first, but the second lost my interest. You can't customize stats or really get the badass multi attacks anymore. Although if you were sucked into the story enough it might be worth it to continue that.

Kingdom Hearts is a pretty solid game although it's a bit of an action/rpg hybrid. Disney characters might be a bit of a turnoff as well. Sequel coming out soon.

Summoner II is an older PS2 RPG that I had fun with, although it's more of an action/rpg hybrid as well. Much darker than something like Kingdom Hearts though.
