I was going to suggest John Cena retain the title after aligning with Lita, but then I saw the RVD/Shelton suggestion and it made me think of two ideas:

1) John Cena does interfere in the match between Rob Van Dam and Shelton Benjamin, costing RVD the match. This sets up a feud between the two without the need for the Money in the Bank contract. Speculation runs wild that Cena is scared of RVD, and Cena says it isn't because he's afraid of RVD, he's not afraid of anybody, etc. Cena reminds us he has stepped it up for everyone and the fans have betrayed him, while some washed up piece of shit from ECW (have him use those words), who is so mellow he probably couldn't care less about anything but his next hit has your love and admiration.

Basically make John Cena into a jealous asshole, upset RVD gets cheered over him, so he sets out to cripple any momentum RVD builds up. The two have a match at Vengeance for the WWE Championship.

2) Vince McMahon & Shane McMahon come out for their match against Shawn Michaels. HBK looks to be going this alone, but Vinnie Mac reveals that Shawn Michaels has a tag team partner. John Cena comes out and cuts a rap, finishing with "I'm the WWE Champion and I AM God!", which results in Cena standing on the apron. Shawn Michaels has no clue what is going on, is a little confused, but wrestles with Shawn Michaels, anyway. HBK dominates Shane McMahon in the early going, but refuses to tag in Cena. Eventually John Cena just enters the ring and demands the ref authorises it as a tag, because he is God and says he wants in. Mike Chiota doesn't know what to do. Vince McMahon tells Chiota to recognise it as a tag.

John Cena then gets into a shouting match with Shawn Michaels, which results in Shane McMahon rolling up John Cena for three. Shawn Michaels gets pissed off and attacks Shane & Vince after the match, but out of nowhere Cena hammers HBK from behind and then plants him with the Killswitch. Cena beats down Michaels for The McMahons' entertainment.

This alone wouldn't be a night for John Cena...

3) John Cena retains the WWE Championship when Lita low blows Edge allowing John Cena to get the F-U. John Cena then does an Edge and makes out with Lita on the entrance ramp. You can even have him grab some titty for extra heat. You want the women to boo John Cena? This is how you do it. The kids will also follow.

When you think about it, you could do 2), 1) and 3) in that order. John Cena helps Vince McMahon out, John Cena costs RVD his contract and John Cena hooks up with the sluttiest Diva of them all. You offend RVD fans, Shelton Benjamin fans (John Cena could say he doesn't see that wannabe gangsta as a credible threat), ECW fans, Shawn Michaels' fans, African-Americans, Christians, woman, children, fans that paid to see John Cena lose the WWE Championship, etc. Everyone wants to see Cena get his ass kicked now. He could play the smug bastard that never gets his own very well, in my opinion.

I can't see a way unless they turn him heel before the title match. Then who are the women and kids gonna cheer for? Or another match is booked ahead of the Title match and the only one would be Micheals and The Lord vs Mcmahons. Which would give it all away.

They'll have to turn HHH face before Cena heel. I can't see it happening at Backlash. It might start tonight at Raw though. It'll have to if its gonna work.

I have a bad feeling Edge is gonna take the match, much like Jericho pulled out the upset in 2001. RVD could then use his money in the back to challenge him, and the writers would do some recycling and set up Triple H-Cena in Hell in a Cell.

So, I'd say a small majority of fans boo the guy instead of cheering him as a face (Well, it's about 50/50, but stick with me here). If they turn him heel, he'll start doing things that will redeem the goodie goodie crap that made us hate him and we may start cheering him again. The marks will boo the guy because they're marks and eventually we'll be back in the same situation: a heel cena who draws a lot of face pops.

If they want him to turn heel just have him act the same, but tell the marks that he's a bad guy now. Give him a cheating victory and have a face call him a heel.

Have Cena tag with HBK vs. Shane and Vince, Cena walks out on HBK, and HBK gets beaten.

Cena either retains the title or loses to HHH. HHH offers his hand, Cena goes nuts on him, beating him down. Cena beats up the refs, maybe a plant like Rob said, then HBK makes the save.

Face HHH and HBK vs. Cena and the McMahons .... with Edge as the guy in the middle
