I fucking love Joey Styles. Everything that we've read about and heard since he came to WWE, he said. Heeling on the fans at the end just capped it all off.
The road to ECW has begun.

I couldn't believe what I was watching. Great promo by Joey.
But now this raises the question. Has everything that has been said about Joey Styles by the WWE been a work, or did they just come with this storyline in the last few weeks? Also where is Coach?
I'm sure no one expect for me cares about the latter question

It was indeed interesting tonight... and Joey's segment was one of the best Raw segments in a long time.
All that is left to be seen is a showing of Heyman. That and a little more edge from RVD to further the eventual ECW.
But is it possible that the team actually thought that far ahead about something? That's insane.

I think this will be a smooth transition for JR to return. On a serious note, Joey is right. I dont wanna hear a bunch of stories all the time. Its like they all wanna be sports entertainers but still wanna stake claim to being a wreslter in the HOF one day. Fact is half the roster cant "really" wrestle. I wish the glory days of the WWF would return!

Great promo by Joey tonight. I was worried about how they were going to start the wheels in motion for the ECW revival, but those thoughts were partially assuaged tonight. Joey really is a phenomenal mic worker, and I'm glad that he finally got a shot to completely let loose.
That promo was like a smark's wet dream.

Well the promo was obviously planned, but I mean this whole thing with Joey. Like him always getting in trouble for his announcing, and Vince always correcting him. I just wonder if this ECW angle has been planned that far a head.

The only things I didn't like about that:
This basically means we have to mute the TVs again...more of JR calling things. Or maybe they could drag it out a bit. I would personally, since King filled in for Tazz on SmackDown some time ago one night, have Michael Cole call RAW for a night (seems like King and Cole had, at least, SOME chemestry during them calling the Rumble match), and use that to spark some more stuff (could work a ECW vs. RAW vs. SmackDown thing), since Cole could talk some smack about RAW during the show and just ignite the RAW vs. SD thing further.
Speaking of the King, that was another thing I didn't like. Just what role did the King play in that, heel or face. I was VERY confused as to whose side he was on tonight on alot of things. And it seemed like he suddenly switched sides during the commercial to be liking what the SS did to Joey just for that series of segments, and then when it was over...he went BACK to badmouthing them again. This would've been ten times more sensible had the Coach been the one to do this, since we KNOW what side HE was on (like it or not, he should've been in the seat instead of King tonight for this, having King do that is SO out of place seeing as he's a kind of tweener-face now).

After watching Joey Styles's promo for like 6 time in less then 24 hours I have seen that Joey has shown us whats wrong with wrestling today.
No it's not the writers coming up with crap angles, or even Vince burying WCW and in the process buried ton's of potential future stars. Whats wrong with wrestling today is....
No emotion.
Wrestlers don't believe in what they do they merely trying to act as where you see Styles last night sure it was a planned promo, but man there was so much emotion. You feel as if Styles truely believed in what he was saying. As where most of the wrestlers today you don't believe in anything they are saying.
People say fire the writers fuck man I say get your wrestlers in acting classes
Kane Knight

Nobody has to.
JR hasn't sounded legit in years. But they're bringing him back.
King's only emotion is when a chick with fake tits is on TV.
Coach's only emotion is...
...LINE!
Wrestlers, similarly, have tenure. You pay your dues, you endear yourself or you get fired. Why bust your ass, when bein better than Rey Mysterio doesn't even get you off Heat? Even better, when you're scripted with bullshit lines and story arcs that make porn stars cringe.
You say your lines, you rape someone in the ass, you go home to your wife and steroid habit.

Much of the WWE lockerroom was shocked with the content of Joey Styles' promo on RAW, reports PWInsider.com.
While the bulk of the content, albeit with a different tone, has been addressed on WWE.com in past interviews with Styles, there was still a feeling of great surprise that the McMahons would allow Styles to deliver such a biting criticism of the WWE product.
The promo's clearance has created optimism that WWE is committed to restoring the "true" ECW this summer.
Joey Styles penned the entire promo he delivered on last night's show. The former "voice of ECW" submitted the script to the creative team and received approval. WWE management was reportedly happy with how it turned out.

God that was the best promo ever, but some things just didn't make sense to me. I know I'm not a harcore ECW viewer, but weren't there "stories" in ECW? And why would you be so concerned about calling holds, when most of the time the wrestlers in ECW beat the crap out of each other, or am I missing something there? But like I said, great promo.
loopydate
05-02-2006, 10:26 PM
There were stories, but they were always secondary to the matches themselves. For example, it was very rare when Joey would talk about the night's main event during an undercard match.
And there was a whole lot more to ECW than wrestlers "beating the crap out of each other." Some of the most memorable ECW matches didn't involve tables and barbed wire and chokeslams off balconies. You should watch some of the RVD/Jerry Lynn matches or anything involving any combination of Super Crazy, Little Guido, and Tajiri for examples of the right way to call holds.

That was an amazing promo. I just watched RAW right now from my DVR. And I'm convinced that this time around VInce will actually put some effort behind reviving the brand ECW. And I think I know why.
Perhaps Vince realizes that he's lost the fanbase that's interested in the wrestling action and not the gimmicks. People who loved Malenko and Storm for their talent and started to loathe the gimmicky characters so prevalent today. I think this new ECW is Vince's attempt at trying to regain the hardcore wrestling fanbase that he's gradually lost in these past few years. He caught a glimpse of that missing fanbase and fervor at last year's inaugural One Night Stand event. And I'm willing to bet that Vince wants them back, whether they're watching WWE programming or WWE-led ECW programming.
But either way, GREAT promo, I was truly amazed as I listened to everything that had been happening, from the replacement with J.R. and Joey's lack of "storytelling ability". After explaining to my girlfriend the difference between REAL play-by-play and WWE "play-by-play", she too was amazed to hear Joey Styles publicly decry the "sports entertainment" aspect of WWE.

You know, I wouldn't have a huge problem with that. Lawler contributed to the WWF vs. ECW feud back in the day, and he got his ass kicked a fair portion of the time. I mean, I'd rather not force Styles into a ring, and I'd rather a competitive wrestling match in this time slot, but if Syltes iwere willing to do it, and they built it up right and the fans were into it, I wouldn't mind.

ECW Hardcore Heaven '97 - Tommy Dreamer pinned Jerry Lawler. I also remember on Raw a time when The Sandman cost Jerry Lawler and Rob Van Dam a match in the first round of a tournament to crown new WWF World Tag Team Champions after Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin vacated the title when Shawn breached his contract and walked out on the WWF.
__________________________________________________________
Also, on the subject of the promo, I think it's getting too much praise, personally. I like Joey Styles, agree with the majority of what he said, and enjoyed the promo, but I don't know that I'd call it the best in a long time. It was good, but any Flair or Triple H promo could match it. Edge's promos in recent months have matched it. Foley in the build up to WrestleMania matched it.
It just seems like it's getting too much credit.

Sorry, I didn't mean the interview itself was shoot, I meant the comments said during it were shoot, or of a shoot nature. They reflected real events happening backstage and known to a few "smart" fans. Styles was the one who wrote it (allegedly) and got it approved by the creative team.

I just re-watched it on WWE.com. Man, they butchered the hell out of that promo. Half of the things that made me mark out weren't even in that version.
With that aside, I haven't marked out like that since last years ONS. For once, in god knows how long, I'm excited to see what is going to happen next week on Raw. I have that little buzz feeling that I had back in 97-98 when you knew something outrageous was goingto happen every week.
Of course, maybe they will end up putting it on the back burner until AONS draws closer, I really hope not though. I've said for the last 6 years that ECW closing its doors was the worst thing that could of happened in wrestling. And now it looks as if they will be "re-opened" of sorts. I can't wait!!

Excellent promo. I even got my dad to watch it when he came over. He enjoyed it, too.
Hopefully they do subtle things over the next few weeks. Have Joey Styles post some "shoot" comments on his own personal website, and have him maybe enter WWE chat and start spreading his message more.
I have a feeling something will go down during the WrestleMania 22 Hardcore Rematch next week. I can see Edge Spearing Mick Foley, only for The Sandman (or some other ECW Icon) to run into the ring and cane the fuck out of Edge. These two guys would then face off at the WWE vs. ECW event. It would probably be better if Tommy Dreamer did this actually, as he can job to Edge without losing credibility.
Anyway, Dreamer/Sandman canes the fuck out of Edge, then canes the fuck out of Jerry Lawler while chasing JR up the ramp, telling him "run you fat sack of shit". That would make the night for me, and I'm not even a Tommy Dreamer/Sandman fan. Mick Foley would then steal the win over Edge, because Foley needs to win sometimes if people are going to buy him as a "making stars" star.

Precisely. I've been thinking the same thing. If Vince wants ECW to be so successful (as he's reviving it for a reason), then why not put it over? However, if it makes WWE look BAD in the end, it must be edited. Honestly, I think Vince should just let the ECWers make WWE look bad. WWE can regain its credibility in the long run, but to put ECW over fully, WWE must be embarassed a few times.

More or less, instead of saying the glass is half empty, you're saying it's half full. Or vice versa. Putting over ECW makes WWE look bad. This is like, 10 times as true in the mind of WWE.
