E3 is right around the corner. The big thing that may go down is the release dates for the PS3 and the Wiiveloution. Anybody planning on going?

I'm not going but I'm working on a game that's going to be there. I have high hopes for the whole event. It's always one of my favorite time of the year.

By that, after May 9th (when the conferences, and in turn the bigger announcements of the event) this thread can easily be used for anything E3 related. Rather then the thread you posted entitled "E3 2006 Expectations".

Not to mention the original question asked was if anyone planned on going.

The other thread can also be a general purpose E3 thread, as both contain speculation.

Not to mention the original question asked was if anyone planned on going.

The question isn't relevant, as most posters on this forum do not qualify to attend E3.

As you can see from the initial post, the main idea of this thread is the poster's speculation.

Sony's E3 press conference is underway right now and while there hasn't been any HUGE announcements, I'll do a keynote play by play the best I can.

Some things so far:
The HDD will be available with every system from the launch.

RSS channel, expanded UMD video profile, Voice-over IP, camera and GPS support being added to PSP in future updates.

Hirai says the "clear black" color system (PS3) will be available at launch.

Little things are mentioned about the online service saying it will be free and that it will be like "air conditioning for a car." Meaning a standard feature.

The PSP will be able to emulate PS1 games straight from a memory stick.

People can pick up for "The PlayStation Card" at retailers, which will allow them to buy additional content.

Phil Harrison shows the online store interface for the PS3. He shows an example of how it will work using Singstar for the PS3, scrolling through dozens of songs from Billy Joel to Destiny's Child. The interface includes a price ($0 for now to keep the pricing strategy secret) as well as other information about the song. There's also the option to see who else is on Singstar, and customize the user's background.

They showed a video package of a bunch of games and then went into two specific new games.

Eight Days is a GTA style 3rd person shooter that looked photo-realistic with amazing animations and life-like features. Naughty Dog shows a new gungle style shooting game which looked pretty nice as well.

They also showed a lot of the new Gran Turismo if anyone is interested in that.

DS
05-08-2006, 09:07 PM
Just a quick update, they have shown a handful of games from most genres. There's plenty of shooters (first and third), a lot of RPGs, sport games, and some fighting games as well. They all look brilliant compared to everything shown so far.

While this wasn't part of the PS3 conference, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy XIII for the PS3 and it will be directed by Yoshinori Kitase who did VI, VII, VIII, and X.

They're showing a video of NBA Live 07 right now with features like footplanting and character response. On the PS2 players could only move at 45 degree angles but on the PS3 they have full 360 degree movement with bending.

It's worthy to mention that all these games that are being played live are being played with what looks like a Dual Shock 2 controller.

DS
05-08-2006, 09:28 PM
They just finished showing a video recap of the E3 package which included Madden, NBA Live, and Tiger Woods PGA. Each looked great. They are showing a video of Final Fantasy XIII (which will come as FFXIII and FFvsXIII). It doesn't look quite as good as Advent Children, but it looks pretty close. If that gives you something to base your judgements off of.

They are now showing a Metal Gear Solid 4 video. WOW.

As soon as the MGS4 trailer gets up, I suggest everyone who is a fan to watch it. There is a huge surprise at the end, almost. They are also spelling it without "L" and instead an upsidedown 7. Like META7GEARSO7ID4...upsidedown of course.

DS
05-08-2006, 09:36 PM
They just showed the new PS3 controller and it looks practically identical to the DualShock 2. Wireless, as well as wired. The best thing yet...

It has a sensor inside. You don't need a reciever at all and don't need to move the D-Pad or Analog as you can just move the controller and move in game, much like the Wii controller, but without a remote style. That doesn't mean you have to as the D-Pad and analog sticks are still there. Bluetooth and all that etc.

DS
05-08-2006, 09:38 PM
Quote from GameSpot:

A demo trailer shows a crate, hopping around of its own accord. It breaks open and the PS3 controller is inside. He lifts the controller up, and the controller on the screen lifts up. With no external sensor required, he can move the controller in six degrees of movement.

Also a picture of the Eight Days game I mentioned earlier.

499 is about what I was expecting. 20G is good enough for me, as I really want it just for gaming stuff (and I want to put my own music into games damnit)

ALso, it looks like we get the major selling point of the Wii controller, minus the wierd ass remote. Plus, it has normal controls so it doesn't have to be used. Slick.

I need to pre-order this baby.

That's awesome about PS3's controller, I've been really skeptical about Wii's contoller and all, and it seems PS3 has taken the good from it and retained the classic "controller" feel... I'm pretty much 98% positive I'm getting a Wii, but I'm still kinda interested in the PS3.

World of Warcraft Movie Buzz
MMORPG getting its due on the silver screen?
by IGN FilmForce

May 8, 2006 - World of Warcraft on the big screen? It could happen... and soon. IGN FilmForce has learned that Legendary Pictures, the production company behind Superman Returns and Batman Begins, may turn the massively-multiplayer online gaming hit into a feature film. The official announcement could come as early as Tuesday -- timed to take advantage of E3 buzz.

Other flicks on Legendary's slate are Where the Wild Things Are, Paradise Lost, 10,000 B.C., M. Night's Lady in the Water and the next films in the rejuvenated Superman and Batman franchises.

The World of Warcraft movie would likely be distributed by Warner Bros. under their multi-year distribution deal with the production company which is topped by Chris Lee (Jerry Maguire, The Mask of Zorro, Apt Pupil).

Keep it on IGN FilmForce for the latest developments!

Interesting. There's a button between Start and Select. I wonder if it's for the tilt? (The small button and light to indicate analog on is gone, so I"m guessing it's always on)

I wonder what the USB is for? Also, I wonder if the little lights on the top are suppose to correspond to what controller port the control is for.

DS
05-09-2006, 02:05 AM
Yeah, pretty much. The 1-4 on the top is what controller port you're on and the USB port will most likely be for charging or just playing wired. The Playstation logo button is probably (enough to say it would be) a "home" button that takes you to the PS3 Network. It might even be able to turn on and off the console without getting up.

The controller is said to be lighter then the current PS2 controllers but it doesn't support the rumbling feature anymore. They said that it interferes with the tilting. Not to mention they were sued for using it in the PS2 so that's probably another reason they decided to move to the tilt action.

Not really, I'll quote someone on another board who know about the technical side:

Well, it does seem to be a reaction to Nintendo's controller, but a really lousy one. The Wii controller can detect position, orientation, and velocity on one hand, and acceleration on both hands. The PS3 controller can detect up to 3 degrees of orientation.

Verant/Sony tried forever to make Everquest into a movie, but failed. I'm still on the fence about this, but it would be cool.

05-09-2006, 06:12 AM
Not really, I'll quote someone on another board who know about the technical side:

I saw something similiar to that on IGN. IT basically said that the PS3 controller can do things invovling tilt (driving, flying, probably movement if tilt is set to forward, but that's my assumption.), but it doesn't have the full range, so you can't swing it like a sword, or point as a specific spot on the screen for it to do something. Still, it'll be interesting to see how it works. It could be interesting for GTA esque games, and other little aspects of games. Like, in a FPS, front and back tilt could be forward and backwards, left and right could be strafing, freeing up an analog stick for 360 turning ( so if someone was behind you, say at a 7'o clock posistion, you could his the corresponding spot on the analog and turn to look at that spot specifically.

The Nintendo conference is starting any second and I'll do my best to do a quick play by play so you know what's going down if you can't watch it.

I would expect some information on the DS & DSLite along with information on some new games. Same with the Wii, probably even a new Mario, price and date and then some showing of some games.

Right after the Nintendo conference is Microsofts where I wouldn't be surprised to hear about Halo 3 because of the release information being huge announcements from Sony and Nintendo. I'll do the same for that. Then E3 starts and you will be overwhelmed with information on pretty much every game.

I'm hoping Rockstar deals out the next GTA here, as a side note.

Started.

Miyamoto is using the Wii controller like a baton and conducting a computer animated orchestra behind him.

DS
05-09-2006, 12:38 PM
They are doing a mix between Miyamoto conducting and one guy playing with the Wii controller sideways like a regular controller (looks oddly uncomfortable honestly) and another one using a two part controller as a sword.

The thing is that E3 is a showing of your product and what it can do. They are relying on their first party games to show their work and this show was the last "big" chance to show off your console. They are putting their games over their console and this isn't the time to do that.

#BROKEN Hasney
05-09-2006, 01:51 PM
I don't understand that though, because it's the games that will push the console. Thats what they've said and I guess they're hoping that they will get a lot of write-ups once the people play the games.

The thing is that Nintendo isn't pushing information about their console, they are pushing information about their games. This is good, but for another time and for the floor. If they have no interest in pushing the console then they should stop making them and focus completely on their games and handhelds. We have no price, no date, and some rather disappointing showings from their games.

They pushed the games on their new hardware. The thing is all they have is the games for the Wii, it's the one thing that sets it apart and they showed it the only way they could and I wanted to play it and see more to be honest.

They can't run around going "OMG TEH GIGAHURTZ" because they're not in for that. But their games on their system is they only thing they can push.

You're right about lack of price or date though, that was kinda stupid.

DS
05-09-2006, 02:04 PM
I don't care about the specifications of the system, I wanted a price and date. The only thing we got is that it will be cheaper and at the end of the year. They pretty much just confirmed things that we have been pretty sure of all along.

Theres a chance, but unlikely. Better to do it to a crowd of people in front of you than on some floor where your games are. If we don;t hear anything by August on that front I will not be happy.

Why you looking forward to Microsoft DS? I think it will be a one-trick pony Halo 3 fest, a Live hand-job and little else.

Although I'm hopeful, the choice between PS3 and 360 is a tough one at the moment so anything to make me choose quicker would be great. The only thing I can see Microsoft even possibly announcing is some developer they've got an exclusive with. I woujldn't flinch or be shocked if it's a GTA exclusive.

That's it. All they have is the show floor where they will probably talk about a couple of the games but that's about it.

I'm also disappointed there was no information on the online service.

Honestly, with that one I think they're in retool mode after seeing that Sony have put some effort in theirs this time. Wii needs to ship with a web browser. That'll get people into it.

We're seeing lots of polygon glitches and strange artifacting. We understand that it's unfinished, so we'll leave it at that. As many have noted, Viva Pinata appears to be very similar to Nintendo's Animal Crossing in concept. Moore doesn't miss a beat in reacting to the weak applause, "C'mon, it is an E-rated game, let's not forget here."

So, Sony have a tilting controller. MS have Animal Crossing....

That just sounds evil.

This Live Anywhere thing sounds nice, but we want to see these features in action. Gates is right that Microsoft is the only company that can pull this off (because of the ubiquity of the company's operating system), but it's also the only company that can fail to execute. Halo 3 Trailer here: http://bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?link=Halo3Announcement

Nobody saw it coming. Halo 3! Who knew? For the last year or two, people have speculated about what our next project was and surprisingly, in all that time, not a single person guessed that it would be Halo 3. Not one.
We declare it the best kept secret ever.

<3 Bungie.

Also, the trailer was all real-time

We won't ruin the content of our short presentation by describing it frame by frame, but we will note that everything you're seeing here is being rendered in real-time on the Xbox 360, using the current version of our Halo 3 game engine. The HDR lighting, self-shadowing, GPU-run particle system and many other effects should make it intact (and more) to our final game.

I was expecting something really bad from Nintendo after reading what you guys said, but honestly, I don't know what was so bad about it. I watched it, and they made the way they pushed the games was real good. They actually got me excited about the Wii, and they announced so many must-get DS titles. Sure it wasn't the big bang I was expecting, but it served it's purpose.

Sony's conference was pretty good, but a bit bland. They announced what they had to, but nothing ground-breaking. It seemed like more of the same to me, with nothing really new or unexpected. Microsoft's presentation just hit me as boring though.

I'd rate the conferences Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. None of them was terribly hot like I expected however.

Don't get me wrong, I think Nintendo did a great job showing the games. They pushed them like they had to and they showed their first party franchises to get everyone interested. The only thing I'm disappointed in was the fact that it was their time to sell their console, not the games. The addition of Snake is good because now you never know if they got the rights to anyone else. Sonic is a populour belief right now but it looks like theres a small 5% chance he might show up after years of myths and rumours.

Can't watch the video, so are you telling me there's a new Super Smash Brothers with Solid Snake in it?

Yes, yes I am.

Basically theres your standard trailer with music hyping you up and all the new things being shown off. Then the trailer ends half way through and theres a codec scene where the colonel tells Snakes he has been invited to SSBB and Snake says hes on a mission studying his enemy.
We see a cardboard box as Link and Mario fight then The box flys off and Snake stands up and says "It's Showtime!" and then the first few notes of the MGS theme play and the trailer ends.

To be honest, Nintendo is really impressing me at E3 this year. I havn't seen anything from Sony or Microsoft that makes me wants either of there consoles.
Twilight Princess, SSBB, The new Mario games and the Virtual Console thing are all making me consider grabbing myself a Wii at some point.

I thought the virtual console thing would just be Mario and Donkey Kong and the origonal Zelda, you know, the usual "classical games" thing but judging by the video I saw at IGN it looks very impresive. So far I've seen that you can download games that where released for the Nes,Snes, N64 and even the Megadrive.

If Snake is in there, who will they be using as SECRET characters? Ocelot?

As far as I'm concerned though, they should remove Wario and put old school Megaman in there. Or maybe not remove anyone, but damn it, old school Megaman needs to be added.

Let's see. I marked out when I saw Zero Suit Samus and Pit, but ESPECIALLY for MetaKnight . And Snake was the icing on the cake.

I'd still KILL for Sonic characters though.

I really thought Nintendo was doing an average job in their conference, but with this, I'm sold on a Wii. Drakul called it. New Zelda, SSBB, all the new jazz. I'm torn between Wii and PS3 now. :(

Tell me more about the virtual console thing, because from what little E3 coverage I'd read, I've seen asbolutely nothing about it and that has really disappointed me.

All I know is that once your Wii is online you can download games from the NES,SNES,N64 and to my surprise the Sega Megadrive. I'm guessing the gameboys might be in there but I'm not sure.
You pay a fee, which I can't remember exactly but I remember thinking it was real cheap.10 cents a game I think which you get to keep once you download.
Then you use a controller which you buy seperatly and just play the game all you want.
The only games I'm sure are available is Sonic,Mario,Zelda, Donkey Kong and Metal Gear. Although I'm sure there will be hundreds if not thousands available if you combine all the consoles.

Somewhere on IGN. It was a big article a few months ago. Dunnop what it would go under since "virtual console" returns no search results.

Found an article. Not the one I read though. lol its old cos it only lists NES SNES and N64. Even though the new vid shows the genesis.
It also says you rent the game even though I've read you download/buy them.

Metal Gear, huh?

The subscription prices are quite steep if you ask me. $19.99 a month for N64 games? I hope they change that.

For RDD. There are pics from the Nintendo booth and the Virtual Console.

Nintendo Power, in last month's issue, said that it would be a monthly fee, but not 19.99$. If I remember correctly, it was more like 5$ a month or something. I'll have to check.

By the way, I know that some of you were not impressed by Nintendo's conference, but with the ridiculous ammount of good games announced for the Wii and the DS (Smash Bros. Brawl!!! ), along with the virtual console, third partys showing lots of support and critics saying that the Wii controller is actually fun to play, Nintendo seems to be coming out of E3 as the big winner this year. Unless Sony or Microsoft has something REALLY big that they are still hiding.

For RDD

One of the most anticipated features of Wii is its game download service, dubbed the "Virtual Console." Using this Virtual Console service, users will have the ability to download and play many or all Nintendo-produced games.

Games from the NES, Super NES, and Nintendo 64, as well as Mega Drive/Genesis and TurboGrafx 16 will be offered via the Virtual Console download service. While the entire catalogue of games for these machines will not be offered, a "best of" selection will be available at a price.

While the gameplay will be the same for all of the retro titles offered via the Virtual Console, Nintendo has stated that some of the games may be improved with sharper graphics or better framerates, with a possibility for Wii remote adaptation. The Virtual Console service will not be used exclusively for retro games, however. Nintendo has stated that "it also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets."
