so me and some other people at work had a work detail today that basically entailed sitting around watching movies. i brought Fire in the Sky, Batman Begins, Stir of Echoes, and Varsity Blues. Someone else brought a Carlos Mencia DVD, Dodgeball, Van Wylder, and some other nonsense.

so i put in Fire in the Sky figuring that these guys had probably never seen it. these motherfuckers are like "look what they're wearing. when was this movie made. well thats the good thing about older movies, their short and not very good. grown men (who apparently have ADD) acting like they really just can't appreciate any film that was made before 2002.

then they put in the Carlos Mencia DVD. now i am listening to the most HACK, un-funny comedian of our time, and again, watching grown people - perhaps older than myself, laughing as though they were hearing original ideas spewing from that fucking idiot racsist hack. and at the end they go ":drool: well, that's one funny motherfucker."

I don't know, I always get weird responses when I say that I have never enjoyed any "teen/stupid comedy" (which would include anything from American Pie to Zoolander). It seems that this generation (let's say 15-25) has a HORRIBLE sense of humor and good movies.

On a side note, I currently have a George Carlin DVD out from Netflix. You want dirty comedy, you go watch a George Carlin stand up show.

Zoolander was okay. i thought that the only humor in Dodgeball was Stiller's character. so, it's not even like i cant enjoy a little low-brow humor; but i can't sit through a movie that is utterly predictable and stupid. some movies you can see 5 minutes in where it's headed: The slacker main character is going to score with the smart, successful, yet extremely hot chick, his uptight friend is going to finally let his hair down, have some fun, and maybe finally hit some pussy, and the dickhead nemisis is gonna fall into a pool or some shit.

and finally, i am about as anti-political correctness as they come. plain and simply, Carlos Mencia is a fraud (he isnt even Mexican) (and his real name isnt Mencia), and he is a shallow, no talent, HACK. nothing will change my opinion on this.

He's playing on racial stereotypes deliberately as social commentary. It's so deliberate he even says it a few times. Much of his comic delivery is done in the style of George Carlin. I guess you've got to be a moron to like Carlin, too....:-\

It's okay. I understand. You hate Carlos Mencia. He's a big fat phony, and his comedy cannot compare to the intellectual depths of Fire in the Sky. And those people clearly hate any depth, as they didn't like that one movie.

Despite the horrible grammar and composition skills, I actually agree with him on his two major points.

1) The vast majority of people in my age bracket (I'm 23, so I'm counting people from about maybe 18 to 28 years old) have abysmal taste in movies. A large number of people in that pool have the underlying assumption that movies made more than a decade ago aren't worth watching. These are the people who won't sit through Casablanca because it's "boring," yet they'll shell out eight dollars to see Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion of Angry Black Women.

2) Carlos Mencia is not funny. It's one thing to be controversial as a means to shed light on underlying human issues. Richard Pryor and George Carlin are/were two of the best at this. It's another thing entirely to be controversial simply for controversy's sake. I consider Mencia to be very much in the same vein as Andrew Dice Clay: loud, angry, rude, and with nothing in particular to say.

i never said you had to like Fire in the Sky to not be a cinematic retard. but trust me, i can tell when i'm sittin' with people who need to see a tit shot or an explosion every 30 seconds or else their attention span expires.

btw, i did not like Fire in the Sky the first time i saw it. you might want to give it another watch if you've only seen it once.

I actually agree with KillerWolf here. I can understand it when people don't appreciate fine art cinema. Sometimes I see movies which I think are trying too hard to be artistic and dislike them for it. Sometimes I see movies which are stupid and pretend to be clever (I really didn't like Napoleon Dynamite). People have different tastes. I really hate it when I see an ad for a movie, or we're watching one at school and people snap into this mode where anything stupid is entertaining.

My friend does this to me in the most annoying way. I've talked to him about writing a screenplay with me, because he is an extremely funny guy. He is actually rather brilliant if you ask me. As soon as we start talking about what we should do with our movie, I get all these stupid "have a guy fall into poop" comments from him, and it's like he knows no other way to create laughs in a movie.

It really upsets me when I see things which make me think "I can be funnier than that", but then people laugh at it. I guess it's kind of a jealousy mixed with an egotistical sense of superiority. Either way, I can empathise with what KW is saying.

I've only see one of Carlos Mencia's routines, and I must say I didn't laugh once. I'm not going to form an opinion of the guy based on that one show, but if his work is synonymous with that one, I think it's safe to say there are much better comedians out there.
