These are a list of programs that will help your computer become quicker and cleaner and will help you replace those big and slow programs like Adobe Reader. These will be in no particular order but I will give a link and explain them as best I can.

Spyware Doctor - Link (http://www.download.com/Spyware-Doctor/3000-8022_4-10377263.html)
In my experience, this is one of the best at actually getting rid of most of your threats. It will find things that the majority of spyware programs will miss. It's removal skills come at a price and that is the disk size. It will take 16.27MB compared to Adaware with 6.28MB.

Adaware SE - Link (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html)
For a lighter, still impressive, spyware remover, you can't go wrong with Adaware. Again, this will run you about 6.28MB.

Tuneup Utilities 2006 - Link (http://www.download.com/TuneUp-Utilities-2006/3000-2086_4-10440422.html)
A lot of people don't have a basic cleaner on their computer and you should. This will help get rid of all your excess files that you don't need and help you save some space. It also fixes your registry, will compact it, and get you running a little more quickly. 18.50MBs.

WinASO Registry Optimizer - Link (http://www.download.com/WinASO-Registry-Optimizer/3000-2094_4-10527986.html)
In case you want to clean your registry a little more, this will get the job done. It also has a lighter disk cleaner that will clean your Firefox/IE caches with it. This will only cost you 7MBs of space.

PerfectDisk 7 - Link (http://www.download.com/PerfectDisk/3000-2094_4-10468459.html)
People will run spyware scans frequently but a lot of people forget about defragmenting their computers. This will help your computer run a lot more smoothly and can even schedule to defrag when you want. A small 4.88MB.

µTorrent - Link (http://www.download.com/uTorrent/3000-2196_4-10528328.html)
This is most likely going to depend on your preference but this is the smallest BitTorrent program I have found that does the job and does it well. Only going to run you .23MB.

7zip - Link (http://www.7-zip.org/)
Most people stick with WinZip or the basic Windows zipping. No good. While I love WinRAR and would still suggest that, 7zip covers all the frequent file types, compresses better, and is smaller. 7zip will run you 2.89MB.

AVG Free - Link (http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10543927.html)
Probably the best choice for virus protection out there right now. And it's free. This will run you about 25MB if I'm correct.

CD Burner XP - Link (http://www.cdburnerxp.se/download.php)
A good alternative for those of you that don't want Nero's bulky software. 25.75MB but compared to Nero's 100+...you save a lot.

DVD Shrink - Link (http://www.dvdshrink.org/)
For those of you that burn DVDs, this will get the job done...the majority of the time. While you might run into some problems, in which case try to copy with AnyDVD, this is the overall better package. This will only run you 1.54MB.

Firefox - Link (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/)
Everyone probably knows the story here but it's a good browser. While those of you with Windows XP might like the new IE7 Beta, this is a good alternative away from Internet Explorer. Around 4.9MB according to the Firefox website. My computer shows 19.57MB.

Thunderbird - Link (http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/)
Good alternative away from Microsoft Outlook. All the basic features and more including spam blocker (which works great) and phishing filter. 23.08MB.

Gaim - Link (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php)
For those of you who have multi-IM programs. This is the best I have found and has great features. Version 2 has features like Direct Connection and is promised to have things like video/voice chat but as of now it's a great, lightweight alternative to opening all those programs. Especially for those of you who have them all launch at startup. 13.70MB which is only 2MB over AIM itself.

Notepad2 - Link (http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html)
Just for those of you who want a little more from Notepad. Not a big deal really.

OpenOffice - Link (http://www.openoffice.org)
This is your alternative to Microsoft Office. It's a free version by the people who distribute Java and it works really well. It is quite heavy at 225MB but it's a free version of Office. Not too bad.

Quicktime Alternative - Link (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm)
This will let you get rid of that huge Quicktime and will takes it place. It lets you do pretty much everything you could with Quicktime but it's smaller. A lot smaller. Only .79MB compared to Quicktime at 66.68MB. You be the judge.

Real Alternative - Link (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm)
Just like the Quicktime Alternative, this is the version for Real. Only 15.07MB WITH the Media Player Classic installed. No need for it and would probably cut down on size a lot.

Foxit Reader - Link (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php)
For those of you who have ever had to use Adobe Reader. Instead of stalling your machine and wasting hard drive space, this alternative will launch nearly instantly and only cost you 2.58MB. Top quality.

Windows Media Player 11 - Link (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx)
Here, again, is a choice based on preference. Those of you with XP and looking for a little more visual media player experience, the beta of WMP11 is your best bet. It looks nice, plays nice, and overall a good experience. Not sure on the exact size but I'd say around 25MB.

iTunes - Link (http://www.apple.com/itunes/)
While iTunes is going to have to stay for those of you with an iPod, I'd say WMP11 still has a better experience.

If you stick with a lot of these programs, you will get some quicker, lighter, and overall better experiences with some of your most frequent programs. If I find some more later, I'll pass them on or if you have any requests of programs that you'd like an alternative to, I'd be happy to look.

Actually, I think MetaPad is the best Notepad alternative in existence today. Many features, but small enough to be used for simple HTML coding, or note-taking, and it's also free, so it's an alternative to MS Word, et. al. - Link (http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/metapad351.zip)

But nice list, DS, thanks!

Going to have to change my suggestion for anti-virus to NOD32. AVG is good and it would be an excellent choice, but NOD32 is smaller, quicker, and gets rid of more in my opinion.

Also, if you are looking for a replacement for Paint, I would suggest Paint.NET. It's got much more features then the original and doesn't take up much more space. Full of features and overly great.

Add up CCleaner to the list. It's another system optimization tool that will get rid of the crap on your computer. I had always used TuneUp Utilities and kept it when I tried other programs but this is the first one that made me feel like there was no use for TuneUp.

These aren't necessarily programs but here are a few good tips to speed up your boot time. First, defrag and scan for spyware/viruses. It might not shave seconds off your time but it will help with the further steps. Plus it just keeps your computer running more smoothly.

Cleaning your startup folder:
Go to Start > Program Files > Startup and delete anything you don't need to run right at start up. I have Gaim and NOD32 loading at boot and that is all.

Clean what isn't showing in the "Startup" folder:
Go to Start > Run > "msconfig" > Startup tab. Again, go through and uncheck everything you don't want to start at boot. Depending what you have loading this should shave about 15-20 seconds off your boot.

Turn off those unneeded services:
This also uses the "msconfig" so follow the steps above to get there and click on the "Services" tab. Click the option to not show Windows services. We will get to those later. The tricky part here is to find the services you use and those you don't. Uncheck all the services you don't think you use. I have all mine off except those that are used by NOD32 (antivirus) and PerfectDisk (defragment). Next thing we are going to do is turn off some of those Microsoft services. Go to Start > Run > "services.msc". Here (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1786006,00.asp) is a good list of services that you can read through and see if you need. Disable all the others you don't. Should get you a good 9 seconds.

Clean that prefetch:
Go to C:\Windows\Prefetch and delete everything. A quick deletion shortcut to bypass the recycling bin is to press Shift + Delete. You won't need to restore these. Then go to Start > Run > "regedit" and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters and find "EnablePrefetcher" on thr right panel. Right click and select modify. If you set it to 2 you only prefecth boot items, 3 will do boot items and applications. Set it to 3 and close regedit. It is recommended that you restart your computer 2 or 3 times now to allow windows to rebuild the prefetch without all those unneeded programs loading. Should get about 7 seconds.

Get rid of your boot screen:
There is really no need for it. Go to Start > Run > msconfig > BOOT.INI tab and select the "/NOBOOTGUI" and close. Restart whenever. Another 2 seconds here.

These are just a few things to cut down on having to wait for your computer to load and you should be able to tell a difference if it drives you nuts trying to wait for your computer to load. Hope this helps.

Foobar2000 is a media player that supports nearly all file types, customizable keyboard hotkeys, instant loading, and some of the most advanced features you will find in any media player. It also includes a converter that allows you to convert nearly all choices. At only 4.27MB it's at least worth a look but be warned that it can all be very overwhelming at first.

DS

Getting started with torrents

A Torrent
In short, a torrent is like Willie Wonka's giant-candy-bar-to-TV machine. It's a file (movie, music, application, photos, etc) that is broken up into pieces by everyone who is uploading the file. You download the file in pieces and when it's finished it's put back into the number of files it originally was.

Downloading Torrents
To download torrents, you need a torrent program and a website to search for them. To me, the best torrent program is uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/download.php). It's fast, lightweight, and easy to use. There are plenty of torrent sites out there to search. Demonoid (http://www.demonoid.com/) (need subscription), TorrentSpy (http://www.torrentspy.com/), PirateBay (http://www.piratebay.org/), and many more.

Once you have downloaded and installed your program then feel free to change some settings. Torrents were made to get better speeds the more you uploaded, but that seems to be a thing of the past. It's just nice to at least upload your file 100%.

Just go to your favorite torrent site, search for the file, and it will ask you to download a small file. I usually just selected Open With and use uTorrent. Once that is done, your torrent program should pop up a small window allowing you to select which files you want to download in the torrent and where to download them to. Just hit OK and you are downloading. When you feel like you're finished, remove the file and you're done.

weather vane
04-24-2007, 01:39 PM
k I know what a Torrent is

lol I use them all the time

I just wanted a crack, I don't know how the file works

most of them are virus'

DS
04-24-2007, 01:43 PM
http://torrentspy.com/torrent/815585/Spyware_Doctor_v4_0_0_2602_WORKING_TBE

Just open that and there should be:
1) Instructions on how to crack the specific version
2) A folder with a crack
3) Something else with a crack

It should be pretty easy. You'll either have to overwrite a file with another or apply a crack with a small program.

Just read the comments on the torrents to make sure it's not a virus.

weather vane
04-24-2007, 02:12 PM
Ah all sounds like too much work. Is there any programs that I can use that will do the same thing as SpyDoctor? You mentioned there are better programs these days ...

DS
04-24-2007, 02:39 PM
A combination of Windows Defender, Spybot, and Ad-Aware should get rid of most of that, and they are all free. Running a cleaning program like CCleaner will help as well.

The best thing to do is to get a virus program like NOD32 or Kaspersky to stop virus/spyware from even coming in.

DS
08-30-2007, 05:23 PM
Going to update this list a little bit with some good program alternatives.

CCleaner - Link (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloading-beta)
A small, yet effective, cleaning utility that lets you get rid of excess files and clean your registry. I replaced larger programs, such as TuneUp Utilities, with this and it works very well. The new beta version is merely 2.5MB.

Diskeeper
This is my favorite defragment program I've worked with. I didn't provide a link because you need to pay for it...or find it on torrents. :) Once installed it will take up ~17.71MB.

JkDefrag GUI - Link (http://www.emro.nl/freeware/)
For those of you looking for a more advanced, efficient, free disc defragment program give this a try. Powerful and free. Can't beat that. 1.8MB

Notepad++ - Link (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=95717&package_id=102072)
If you use Notepad at all, even for quick notes, you should download this and replace it. It's small and quick, just like Notepad, but with far more features and might even help you cut down on the number of times you have to open Word or OpenOffice. 1.4MB

Xplorer2 - Link (http://www.download.com/Xplorer2-lite/3000-2248_4-10407731.html)
This is a good replacement for Windows Explorer, which is what opens when you go to different folders and such. This program lets you have 2 window panes that allow you to open up different folders at once and makes it easier to copy files. More advanced features and small program. 1MB

Launchy - Link (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=132975&package_id=146049)
I love this program. It's pretty much all I use now instead of searching for shortcuts and such in the start menu/folders. Simply press Alt+Space and a little window bar pops up, you type keywords/filenames/folders/etc and it will instantly find that for you without you having to search. Just hit enter and it opens. Get this. 1.1MB

TeraCopy - Link (http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.asp)
This will replace Windows copy system with a better one. This copies files faster, allows you to pause the transfer, pretty much fail-proof, and has more options to work with. If something screws up you can see what happened and select what you want to transfer again. Easy to do and just great. It's tiny too so it's a must have. 768KB

ImgBurn - Link (http://imgburn.com/index.php?act=download)
This is just for those of you looking to burn ISO files to DVDs/CDs/etc. Nice little program that's great. Better than Nero. 1.5MB

Opera - Link (http://www.opera.com/download/)
I don't want to start an Opera/Firefox/IE7 war here, this is just an alternative to those of you looking for a new browser. I use Opera over Firefox now due to speed issues but this is really computer specific and, more than that, user specific. This is simply a users choice but give it a try. 4.6MB

Pidgin - Link (http://pidgin.im/download/)
I had this down on the first post when it was known as GAIM but they've changed the name and made some changes. Anyone with multiple instant messaging programs (AIM, Live Messenger, Yahoo, etc) and wanting a single package should get this. Great stuff. 10.8MB

Now that there is an updated list, here are some of the programs I'm using that I don't want to write descriptions and stuff for:
Foobar2000 - media player alternative...best there is in my opinion
uTorrent - I've mentioned this before but still the best torrent program
7zip - metioned this as well but I think this is the best zip program out
NOD32 - anyone using an antivirus should be using this or Kaspersky
Spybot - the new version is great at getting rid of spyware
VLC - media player I use for videos. Won't use anything else now

If I think of any more I will add them but that's that for now. Get Launchy.

G

I also recommend Pidgin. All of your buddies from the different IM programs on one list. :y:

i just read page 1, but when I build or reformat a computer I use

http://www.oldversion.com/

I have a Flashstck filled with a few gigs of old versions of software that still works.

if you just want winamp for mp3s on a basic PC its less than a meg as apposed to 20 with the new version...

I remember they maid a few versions with a burn playlist to disk option.....why did they get ride of it?(inless im just not looking hard enough for it?)

Xero
04-23-2009, 08:34 PM
Pretty sure they integrated burning into the paid version only.

Could be wrong, haven't used Winamp in years.

I don't have a serial number for wordperfect on this one.

Xero, if you have to pay for it now but it was once free. Than that version will be on oldversion.com or whatever website I mentioned above.

They're really good for just keeping the ram usage to a minimum and still do the same thing, sometimes more, like one version had all these live feeds and you could watch seinfeld. It was like pre-youtube internet tv....more So pre-justin tv, I wonder if I got that version I could still use it, (or were the servers on winamp.com?if its a pay option they'd be there)

by the way, someone gave out Windows serial keys, would those be slafe to put on other peoples computers who want both XP and Vista?(haven't tried it myself yet but want to) I'll see how it works for someone with the same type of system as my main computer to do it for them and see how it goes.

AND I KNOW THIS COULD ALSO BE IN THE VIDEO GAME FORUM BUT!??
Has Anyone installed that version of Linux onto their PS3... if so... How did you do it? were is the safest place to get that version of linux? was it worth it/how does it run?(I understand it's being umulated as a PC so is 4 times slower than it could be) what goodies and emulators have you've been able to run properly? is there anything I should know about Linux for ps3...anything really special?does it slow anything down? could I play "games for windows PC" that microsoft makes?

Xero
04-24-2009, 09:34 AM
You know what? I have a built in spell checker in my browser.

And even if I didn't, I have the free Open Office suite.

So yeah, no excuse.

Xero

As far as Linux emulation goes, very few modern games run well on regular Linux (through Wine). I have no idea how PS3 Linux preforms but I know it wouldn't be better than a true Linux setup.

#BROKEN Hasney
04-24-2009, 08:57 PM
I don't know, with a similar spec to what the Windows version of the game runs at in WINE (Using an NVidia GFX card, ATI Linux drivers are horribel) I lot of DX9 stuff is pretty damn good.

#BROKEN Hasney
04-24-2009, 08:58 PM
Oh, and you can't use WINE on the PS3. This isn't an x86 emulator, this is a version of Linux compiled for the cell. Things have to be specifically ported for it or compiled yourself.

What are the best programmes for internet security etc nowadays? My gf's laptop got hit by something this evening which tried to convince her to buy an anti virus programme. I've managed to get rid of most of the stuff but it's still not 100%. Need to get some stuff on there.

Avast! for viruses and Spybot for spyware

Easiest way to avoid Spyware is to ditch IE and get Firefox/Opera/Chrome though

http://www.avast.com/ - Avast

http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html - Spybot

Wow, that was quick!

Interenet Explorer is normally good for me in general. She was just playing on some game that she likes in Facebook and then boom, pop up city. I was adamant that she must have downloaded or clicked something but from what I read about the virus it's just a risk on social networking sites. Shows what I know about viruses and the like.

I'll try that out tomorrow, cheers Hasney :y:

Damn there's a second virus, the google installer rootkit as well as the WinPC 'antivirus' crap that I got rid of late last night. Spent hours on it last night, looks like I've got more tonight to do. Hopefully not as much though.

Vietnamese Crippler
05-27-2009, 04:17 AM
What did you try doing to remove them besides using the programs Hasney posted? Was it something like these?

The Mackem

Yeah exactly those. The issue I had last night though was that firstly a well recommended virus remover would not load up. I've found out today that if I renamed it's .exe to something stupid and different like fluffy.exe it will load. Then sdecondly I thought I was only dealing with one virus, the WinPC antivirus shit. Don't have the laptop with me right now to sort it all out but last night I had removed the WinPC crap and shit was still popping up and the computer crashing etc but think I will nail it tonight.

Was a bit surprised how she got these just from using Facebook. When I was researching, I was suprised by how many people have been getting these viruses. Then somebody at work has brought in their laptop because the same thing happened to them.

Dont go with avast. Spend the money and get either Kaspersky or Eset Nod 32. Either way dont illegally dl them. Not worth the risk.

Yeah, the only time I got a virus was from Downloading an illegal McAffe back in 2000. Madness.

Avast is defo the best free option, but I'd go with NOD 32 if you wanna lay out some cash.

Go to run (windows key+R) and type msconfig an get rid of any entrys in any tab that refer to google, then uninstall it. Should kill it for you.

The Mackem
05-29-2009, 03:16 AM
I've done that now (cheers) and found something else associated with the WinPC virus that I thought I had already dealt with. Nothing is popping up now but the rootkit virus still keeps on coming back. I wouldn't be that bothered but sometimes on start up the computer will freeze if I click into internet explorer. Not sure about other programmes.

My laptop got raped this past week because of some faulty update on McAfee, seems a lot of people were hit by it.

Anyway, what are the best antivirus/spyware programs now?

I'm using Ad-Aware Free and Windows Defender, although i'm not sure if I really NEED to use both, and weighing up my options for an antivirus program after removing McAfee (and thus fixing my laptop)

Avast is shit, use Avira free.
That, with Spybot's immunize, and firefox with Adblock, should be all you need. Comodo Firewall if you feel you need one.
